  • This was supposed to be a basement renovation, though turns out it had almost 2 feet of water in it, so we've got different fish to fry.. ( hopefully not caught in the basement )

UK here, same happened to my Dad.. Had his post war house for 30 ish years, never had any damp issues in the cellar, 5 ish years ago the cellar flooded. Had to spend a fortune to tank it, sump pump, get a surface water discharge consent to a water course and spend on testing the water periodically. Local water table has risen about 12"/300mm, so he's fighting mother nature. Have fun

I piped mine into the city sewer after a water main break nearby kept the sump pump running continuously a few years ago. I figure it's their water, so they can have it back. This winter has been the highest water table I've seen in 11 years here. I now have 2 sump pumps in case one fails, and a battery backup in case the grid fails. My finished basement would be under water in an hour without those!

And here I am looking for a house that fits my low income...that's literally my nightmare having to deal with unwanted water...And I wanted a basement to build a storm shelter and a theater....

I llive Germany and have the same problem.
I live right next to the Rhine ( a large river) the water level is high enough to flood my basement when it rains a couple of days.
Besides a drainage pump like you installed. ( mine connects right to the sewage of the house)
I coated the floors to get rid of the dampness in the basement.
    The walls where also coated.
Made a huge difference in humidity in the rooms.
The pump is also connected to a smal UPS that usually get sold for PCs on amazon.
It is enough to keep the basement dry when power goes out for some time.
Only downside is that you have when coating the floor and walls is that you have to remove the paint and other materials prior to the coating since the water will sooner or later desolve whats left underneath and the new coating will start to flake of.
Aince that is a huge pain in the # i used a high power pressure washer to remove the old paint and other loose stuff 😂

    • @NinoJoel
      @NinoJoel 5 місяців тому +1

Also depending on the amount of effort you are willing to do.
You should check if the outside of your basement is properly sealed/ coated with tar.
It should otherwise you will have wet walls even with normal rain

What a mess. I've lived in a basement apartment for over half my life and I've been very fortunate not to have any water ingress over those 30+ years. Not from outdoors, anyway. Leaking water heaters and overflowing bathtubs from the apartments above mine, however... that's been the bane of my existence.

If the town has problems discharging onto the lawn, discharge into the sewer line in your basement instead. Not legal, but not going to get you fined if nobody sees it. Plus it adds just a little bit more water to a collapsing system so hopefully they upgrade it.

Make a gravity battery. A ground level water deposit and another in a water tower, use solar power to pump the water up to the tower, then install a hydro turbine to generate electricity when letting water back down to the ground level deposit.

I don't know how much room you have but it would be fun to build a greenhouse, and use the water for aquaponics of some kind, you could have some adorable little fishes and floating flora and fauna all in one temperature controlled space, heck even plant some herbs and spices, or edible grasses, as well as plants to filter the water. It would be complicated but you could plumb a small water heater that would use the water from the aquifer to steam during the winter, or work it like a heater core where the hot water is circulated through a radiator and a fan blows through to heat the air... Idk what I'm talking about but it's an idea none the less. If Uncle Sam would even allow you too.
