I highly doubt people played Magneto for the character back then. If the roles were reversed and all the Capcom characters were better and were picked OVER the marvel characters and the game was dubbed, "Capcom" over "Mahvel" we honestly wouldn't be making a huge fuss over X-men characters.

The very notion of 'characters being nothing more than functions' completely misses the point about what the initial draw to a fighting game is. You look for characters to connect to, you find something visually to grab you and draw you in. That's the initial pull. Peter Rosas' statement is so ass backwards, those two paragraphs were incredibly infuriating to read. I think that's actually put the final nail in the coffin for any hype i had left for this game.

X Men were hella prevalent back in the day. I sucked at MvC2 but I loved watching people play for the flash. and I also think that the movie side of things is what's dictating the Mvci roster at this point. they know goddamn well people were looking for certain characters. they're just PRing their asses off at this point.

Fighting game's roster is, in my opinion, the most important aspect. Fighting games are perfect way to showcase cool and kickass characters. If we had a fighting game with very good engine and mechanics, but all the characters in it would be color swaps with different movesets....Who would wanna play that?! The fact the devs are treating these characters as ''functions'' and not characters is outright insulting to me. These characters are icons who have brought entertainment to millions upon millions of people. To have them reduced to the level of mechanics is ludicrous! But Characters in a fighting game/any game in general are a big part of what make a game great. Street Fighter was popular because for its time the gameplay was something new and everyone enjoyed. The gameplay was solid because each character was unique in their own way and players loved them because they could fit their own personality with them, many players which for who originally played X-Men COTA all the way to UMVC3 were able to fit theirs with their favorite X-Men characters. 11. Taking a step back, The X-Men, and specifically Magneto, didn't become famous because of their "functions" or any of the Marvel vs Capcom games. What I don't like about the roster are, It's recycled, there aren't much enjoyment to play new characters and discover their potential. I mean ,we have seen these characters before in UMVC and the moves aren't much changed and I know the gameplay of this game is different ,but going to that road not taken will be not possible. The size of the roster is not admirable, It is less and the possibility of watching players using low tier characters will decrease, I mean who is the one who doesn't want to watch players using low tier characters and enjoy their victory. TryHardHero Capcom isn't helping themselves with some of their roster choices. Both Arthur and if true Firebrand instead of another IP character like from Ace Attorney, Viewtiful Joe or Onimusha is a shame. I also don't understand why they kept Spencer's reboot design when one of his alternate costumes in three is his classic attire. Hopefully Monster Hunter ends up being pretty super and I want to see Jedah in action.
Starsoulklr Digging their own graves. People loved MvC2 because of it's big, diverse roster. If they can't do that now, due to rights or laziness, then I'm not gonna support it. Monster hunter is exciting from the capcom side, I'll give them that, but yes, they have a huge pool of IPs to choose from and they haven't even scratched the surface. On the Marvel side, no X-Men equals no buy for me. I'm not gonna tell people how to spend their money but why buy something you're not fully content with?
I really can't help but think we're looking at another SFV incident at this rate. There's a lot of work that's needed. Lots of little touches. They can't afford to rush it.

I see it as the opposite: they made it overly accessible. Max said that some of the combos felt easier and more meant for new players. Also, the fact that they're trying to pretend that only the MCU is what matters means that they're aiming at people who just came into marvel with the films. No care for the people who have played the game for years or have read the comics for years.
I heard about that. certain pros are love a character and is good at that character can make that specific character a top tier if it proves to be fruitful.
The reason why I won't get it is because it's represents laziness at its finest. Sure, it plays good, but that can't be the sole thing going for it. It looks pretty bad in comparison to past fighters, its roster is so puny, the story mode seems to be really awful and awkward like a fanfiction, and represents bad business practice with day one dlc, or more specifically, on disc dlc. It feels like a game that needs far more time to be developed and feels really rushed.
Isn't everything FanFiction nowadays? Don't people who work in writing department of almost anything actual fans of the property? FanFiction isn't bad, it just how you use the characters and settings you love. Look at Project X Zone and Kingdom Hearts, their story is basically fanfiction but well done enough to sell well and overall be enjoyable.
At least the Capcom side is trying to some extent. They have two interesting choices on Capcom's side, but the Marvel side has almost nothing at the moment.

MvCI has no excuse. Even with the Xmen cut out, marvel could have easily compensated in new characters from various comics, but they decided to port the majority of mvc3 with that unholy abomination mobile GRAFFIX paint job. It's like they made a game that could function on the vita and forgot that nobody plays it.
well capcom is the one making the game so they were the ones who got to chose the characters for the roster so while marvel just recommend characters for capcom so they are mostly to blame for the roster.
Honestly it made me actually feel bad when I saw the function comment, In MVC3 I picked Spider-man as a main and failed at using him for a long time but always went back to him because i have always loved the character. If they had Spencer play exactly like spiderman I would have never gravitated towards him. The notion that X-Men characters are not popular or that Marvel is trying to get rid of them is absurd to me, they have had a ton of ongoing series for the last few years that have been amazing to read. I feel like with a lot of these changes characters like young Cyclops or Iceman would be really cool to see return. Give us Ms.Marvel who is just nuts popular since she has been created. I would play those characters if they were low tier just on the fact that they are in the game and would be fun to use them. Not sure what Capcom is doing but it feels like they are letting other factors decide what goes into the roster. We got Rocket and Arthur back from MVC3? Oh yeah they were crazy popular right there must have been tons of marvel players asking for them back... c'mon man. I want to see this game do good, and I love the way the game plays so far with the expanded creativity of combos. If they don't want to promote the X-Men characters which are better than the MCU characters. Then why not add Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones,Punisher or blade instead.
Max, you know for damn sure those characters aren't coming. It's clear their hands are tied and there is no way they can bring in anything beside what they own in the MCU. Regardless the game still looks like it was produced by an indie studio and has some of the worst art design, character models, and voice acting in the genre.
Even if they can't use the X-Men or F4 characters for rights reasons (Which they can because Fox only has the movie rights and Marvel still has merchandise rights), that doesn't excuse this tiny roster. There's dozens of characters Marvel still has the rights to use that could compensate for the X-Men and such, but instead they're just going with the basic, stock characters that everybody knew already was gonna be in the game.

The fact that those games that are even more owned by Marvel have xmen baffles me why this game does not have them. I want Gambit, Magneto, Wolverine, Sentinel, Rouge, Psylocke. Man I would even take now stereotypically gay iceman just someone from the xmen to show they even kinda care.
My biggest gripe with how MVC:I is I feel that it is being fully catered not to MvC fans, but more towards selling the new Marvel Universe and whatever movies are or will be out. There's always been this tone of "over the top wacky bullshit". This just feels like the game is taking itself too serious and doesn't want to "tarnish" whatever they are trying to sell.
It's not even catered to new Marvel comics. No Spider-Gwen,Miles Morales,Iron Heart,Hydra Cap,Kamala Khan,Jane Foster,or any of that. They're catering to the movie watchers
To me its simple: the roster SUCKS! We were expecting a lot of new characters, there are many, MANY characters from dozens of different Capcom games that people have been asking for since the first MVC. And what do they do? They recycle the MVC3 roster and bring back characters like Arthur and Spencer?? Nobody wanted them in 3 to begin with! They are only adding like 5-6 new characters and will obviously sell new ones as DLC, wich kinda gives me a SFxTK feeling. And there goes my chance to see some Power Stone, Red Earth, Rival Schools, Cyberbots characters, a RE other than Chris and more Darkstalkers characters other than Morrigan (i know Jedah is rumored but it'd take J Talbain, Demitri, Donovan or even BB Hood over him any day). And thats for Capcom, I wont even talk about Marvel or i'll drown in a sea o salt!

That said, most of Capcom's roster seems to be yanked right out of Project X Zone (with exception of, as you said, Spencer); heck, X being in this game seems like hollow pandering at best.

The very notion of 'characters being nothing more than functions' completely misses the point about what the initial draw to a fighting game is. You look for characters to connect to, you find something visually to grab you and draw you in. That's the initial pull.

X Men were hella prevalent back in the day. I sucked at MvC2 but I loved watching people play for the flash. and I also think that the movie side of things is what's dictating the Mvci roster at this point. they know goddamn well people were looking for certain characters. they're just PRing their asses off at this point.

If that were the case, you could have a gray character with no features, call him Anonymous Andy, and just cause you change the moveset and mobility he's automatically a new and fresh character. Like, I want this game to do well but it's like Capcom/Marvel/Disney/whoever the fuck is responsible is trying their hardest to hurt this games sales. The slap in the face for me is when they said no one knew the X-men and people will immediately know who Black Panther is. With the simplified controls, I wouldn't be surprised if their audience are 10 years that just know the MCU.

The reason I particularly want this game to flop is for Capcom to finally get through their heads that they cannot keep treating games as a catalyst for sponsors and e-sport income. I want this to fail so Capcom understands that, for all the love we had towards them in the past, they are not the same company anymore, they do not deserve to make any games like this and expect that everyone that is not sponsored to accept any crap that comes out of their mouths:
- 2011: No, we didn't release UMvC3 as a stand-alone title because we wanted more money (Yes, you did)
- 2012: No, the cross-play on SFxTK only works on PS3 because the architectures of PSN and XBL are different (No, it's because you had a deal with Sony since before release)
- 2015: SFV will have a 3-frame input window so players can more easily pull off combos (No, It's because you can't figure out how to properly code on UE4 so your game inherently has delay that you can't fix and you came out with a bullshit excuse to cover the fact that no-one could pull any combos on that environment without an input buffer)
- 2016: No, Marvel vs Capcom Infinte has no ties with the Marvel cinematic universe so we have the freedom to use every character (False. No X-Men, Fantastic Four or Spiderman characters confirmed yet for the game and initial roster looking like Disney shilling)
- 2017: USF2 is the DEFINITIVE way to play SF2 (No. You POORLY re-used assets from SF4 and called it an extra feature, POORLY re-used sprites from HD Remix and called it new characters, POORLY implemented an online component and more, and you sold it for WAAAAY more than HD Remix)

Fighting game's roster is, in my opinion, the most important aspect. Fighting games are perfect way to showcase cool and kickass characters. If we had a fighting game with very good engine and mechanics, but all the characters in it would be color swaps with different movesets....Who would wanna play that?!
The fact the devs are treating these characters as ''functions'' and not characters is outright insulting to me. 10. In the end gameplay should be the only thing that matter in a game right? But Characters in a fighting game/any game in general are a big part of what make a game great. Street Fighter was popular because for its time the gameplay was something new and everyone enjoyed. The gameplay was solid because each character was unique in their own way and players loved them because they could fit their own personality with them, many players which for who originally played X-Men COTA all the way to UMVC3 were able to fit theirs with their favorite X-Men characters.
11. Taking a step back, The X-Men, and specifically Magneto, didn't become famous because of their "functions" or any of the Marvel vs Capcom games. It was because I and others grew up with the X-Men wether you read the comics or watched the 90s joint or in any other way.

What I don't like about the roster are, It's recycled, there aren't much enjoyment to play new characters and discover their potential. I mean ,we have seen these characters before in UMVC and the moves aren't much changed and I know the gameplay of this game is different ,but going to that road not taken will be not possible. The size of the roster is not admirable, It is less and the possibility of watching players using low tier characters will decrease, I mean who is the one who doesn't want to watch players using low tier characters and enjoy their victory. I see it as the opposite: they made it overly accessible. Max said that some of the combos felt easier and more meant for new players. Also, the fact that they're trying to pretend that only the MCU is what matters means that they're aiming at people who just came into marvel with the films. The reason why I won't get it is because it's represents laziness at its finest. Sure, it plays good, but that can't be the sole thing going for it. It looks pretty bad in comparison to past fighters, its roster is so puny, the story mode seems to be really awful and awkward like a fanfiction, and represents bad business practice with day one dlc, or more specifically, on disc dlc. It feels like a game that needs far more time to be developed and feels really rushed.

FanFiction isn't bad, it just how you use the characters and settings you love. Look at Project X Zone and Kingdom Hearts, their story is basically fanfiction but well done enough to sell well and overall be enjoyable.
It looks specially bad thanks to Injustice 2 and Tekken 7 story mode and stuff.

At least the Capcom side is trying to some extent. They have two interesting choices on Capcom's side, but the Marvel side has almost nothing at the moment.

Up until they released that movie I didn't even know what a guardian of the galaxy was, then someone explained it to me and I thought he was fucking with me. MvCI has no excuse. Even with the Xmen cut out, marvel could have easily compensated in new characters from various comics, but they decided to port the majority of mvc3 with that unholy abomination mobile GRAFFIX paint job. It's like they made a game that could function on the vita and forgot that nobody plays it.

well capcom is the one making the game so they were the ones who got to chose the characters for the roster so while marvel just recommend characters for capcom so they are mostly to blame for the roster.

Honestly it made me actually feel bad when I saw the function comment, In MVC3 I picked Spider-man as a main and failed at using him for a long time but always went back to him because i have always loved the character. If they had Spencer play exactly like spiderman I would have never gravitated towards him. The notion that X-Men characters are not popular or that Marvel is trying to get rid of them is absurd to me, they have had a ton of ongoing series for the last few years that have been amazing to read. I feel like with a lot of these changes characters like young Cyclops or Iceman would be really cool to see return. Give us Ms.Marvel who is just nuts popular since she has been created. I would play those characters if they were low tier just on the fact that they are in the game and would be fun to use them. Not sure what Capcom is doing but it feels like they are letting other factors decide what goes into the roster. We got Rocket and Arthur back from MVC3? Oh yeah they were crazy popular right there must have been tons of marvel players asking for them back... c'mon man. I want to see this game do good, and I love the way the game plays so far with the expanded creativity of combos. But dont make me pick up Spencer because he is kind of spider-man lol, or black panther because he is kind of wolverine. That's that bullshit Capcom

If they don't want to promote the X-Men characters which are better than the MCU characters. Then why not add Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones,Punisher or blade instead.
And considering that Luke Cage and Blade are mentioned in Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3...that really is a must.

Max, you know for damn sure those characters aren't coming. It's clear their hands are tied and there is no way they can bring in anything beside what they own in the MCU.
Regardless the game still looks like it was produced by an indie studio and has some of the worst art design, character models, and voice acting in the genre.
Even if they can't use the X-Men or F4 characters for rights reasons (Which they can because Fox only has the movie rights and Marvel still has merchandise rights), that doesn't excuse this tiny roster. There's dozens of characters Marvel still has the rights to use that could compensate for the X-Men and such, but instead they're just going with the basic, stock characters that everybody knew already was gonna be in the game.

The fact that those games that are even more owned by Marvel have xmen baffles me why this game does not have them. I want Gambit, Magneto, Wolverine, Sentinel, Rouge, Psylocke. Man I would even take now stereotypically gay iceman just someone from the xmen to show they even kinda care.

My biggest gripe with how MVC:I is I feel that it is being fully catered not to MvC fans, but more towards selling the new Marvel Universe and whatever movies are or will be out. There's always been this tone of "over the top wacky bullshit". This just feels like the game is taking itself too serious and doesn't want to "tarnish" whatever they are trying to sell.
It's not even catered to new Marvel comics. No Spider-Gwen,Miles Morales,Iron Heart,Hydra Cap,Kamala Khan,Jane Foster,or any of that. They're catering to the movie watchers

To me its simple: the roster SUCKS! We were expecting a lot of new characters, there are many, MANY characters from dozens of different Capcom games that people have been asking for since the first MVC. And what do they do? They recycle the MVC3 roster and bring back characters like Arthur and Spencer?? Nobody wanted them in 3 to begin with! They are only adding like 5-6 new characters and will obviously sell new ones as DLC, wich kinda gives me a SFxTK feeling. And there goes my chance to see some Power Stone, Red Earth, Rival Schools, Cyberbots characters, a RE other than Chris and more Darkstalkers characters other than Morrigan (i know Jedah is rumored but it'd take J Talbain, Demitri, Donovan or even BB Hood over him any day). And thats for Capcom, I wont even talk about Marvel or i'll drown in a sea o salt!

That said, most of Capcom's roster seems to be yanked right out of Project X Zone (with exception of, as you said, Spencer); heck, X being in this game seems like hollow pandering at best.

Out of all the RE characters they could've thrown around I most expected Wesker. Y'know...cause he's supernaturally powerful and has a great skill set for a fighting game.
I agreed with all of this except the Jedah thing, I am excited that he may be appear, however I do agree about how more darkstalkers characters should appear.
