  • One of Germany's biggest arms manufacturers has confirmed the purchase of 50 Leopard 1 tanks from a Belgian company.
The tanks are old and will be refurbished in Germany. They are expected to be sent to Ukraine to strengthen supplies at the frontline. Germany faced criticism early in the war for being too slow in its supply of arms to Ukraine, but Berlin has since ramped up its support, supplying the first of the Leopard battle tanks to Ukraine in March this year.

Leopard 1A5 has same optics and fire-control system as a 2A4, its early 80s level basically, far above T-62s and T-55 and roughly equal to early T-72 models. Not a match for T-72B3 and newer of course, but still useful.

50 tanks of any type aren't a game changer, but 50 Leopard 1s are better than none. If "outdated" gear was not useful at all, Russia wouldn't be digging out its T-54s and 55s. Regardless how old any of these are, you don't want their guns pointed at you, and the fact that there are better ones out there dosn't change that if you don't happen to be sitting in one of those.

Those leopard 1 tanks are in very good condition, but they are somewhat obsolete. But they are in such a wonderful condition that they are worth the effort to update them. Those tanks are among the best Leopard 1 tanks available, having been maintained in operational condition till 2014, and since then they have been stored and cared for, protected from the weather (and looters) inside a proper warehouse.
I have seen other tanks, stored outside (like italian Leo 1 tanks), unguarded. Those tanks are problematic and need a full extremely costly and time consuming rebuild.
Decommissioned tanks are usually stored in the open, because if cost. But it causes the tanks to deteriorate extremely quickly. Those ex-belgian tanks did not suffer that fate.
The ex-belgian leopards are a very good buy by the German government, they bought tanks that need relatively little work done on them, apart from updating they fighting capacity and some up-armoring.
I don’t understand why the press, in their ignorance, describe the tanks as being in a bad condition. That is simply wrong.

It’s especially funny to read about your liberties, try to go to a new Maidan, and the SBU will give you a tour of the basements and methods of the Gestapo, and if you’re not lucky, they’ll dig somewhere in a landfill, as they have been doing for more than a year.

And it is no less funny to read about the independence of Ukraine, even under the USSR, Ukraine was more independent than it is now.

most importantly Leopard 1 lacks armor protection.
It is protected vs auto cannons but every dedicated anti tank weapon, from an late 40´s RPG-2 to a modern RPG-29 will cleanly penetrate it on every combat distance.
not even talking about ATGM, Artillery or any large caliber guns.

Leopard 1's won't stand much against any more modern T-series tanks, like the T-80 and T-90 since the 125mm guns could pen the armor of a Leo 1. And the Leopard 1 is equipped with a 105mm main gun which is relatively smaller than a 115mm gun and 125mm gun. The leopard would also fire APDS rounds instead of APFSDS (Difference you may ask? APDS stands for "Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot" while APFSDS is "Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot") APFSDS shells would probably have more penetration values and damage compared to APDS shells. So Leopard 1's would have some struggle against even T-55's and T-62's and don't even think about T-72, T-80's, and T-90's.
I am not trying to bias Russian tanks but the Leopard 1 is just obsolete, under armored, outpowered, and out gunned since it is a Cold War era tank.
