  • Various theories attempted to raise the voices of alienated subjects, also known as subalterns. Homi Bahba revived du Bois’s theory by saying there was hybridity of the hegemonic affectation and a true undercurrent. Dipesh Chakrabarty showed that many aspects of Indian culture were Eurocentric and needed to be divorced in order to have true Indian nationalism. But Gayatri Spivak argued that there were certain subalterns that couldn’t have their voices raised, because they were essentially too alienated by cultural hegemony. They were so subjected that they had no voice of their own. So there is a tension in historiography that some people may truly be lost as legitimate sources to counter colonial narratives. These postcolonial theories allow us to question the archives, but also show how colonized peoples often cannot transcend their subjugation.

When basic facts, the nature of humanity, and the nature of reality sound like (not how you use it) "wokeism".
Ohhh so that's why certain people are against academia.
This is getting deep I'm looking forward to the full post-colonial lecture/video.

People will do anything to live in their own bubble and not read academic papers

@@EmmaWithoutOrgansOftentimes academic papers are useless, since they may be unoriginal in insights and may even contain plagiarism due to pressures to publish.

@@jamesdragonforce That's definitely hyperbolic language as it would require you to read over 50% of all academic papers in all subjects.
Nearly all modern knowledge/research is based on prior knowledge. Literally all you have to do is cite your source and give credit where due.

@@john2g1 I never said academic publishing is useless in learning new subjects. I was just trying to articulate why I feel that sometimes there is simply too much stock put into the importance of academic publications due to the pressures of academics to publish. And you don’t need to spend your whole life to read academic papers to know that is a common problem.

@@jamesdragonforce I 100% agree with your last statement... But that aint what you said in the first one.
Perhaps I took you too literally, but I also literally said that was hyperbolic language. I guess long story short(er) we (loud society) have reached an anti-academic zenith. What used to be hyperbole and legitimate criticism is now a talking point for people with extreme positions.
I'm just calling for more accurate, data driven commentary... Especially since we are discussing research and data driven topics.

Many conservatives ask, "How can diversity be our strength? Diversity is a weakness!" Diversity CAN be a weakness if it crowds out other cultures or ideas. If conservatives want to understand, all they have to do is ask. But they think contention with these sociological concepts is, itself, a form of wokeism.

Yes. I really like Peter Gunn, _History and Cultural Theory_ (Oxon, UK: Pearson Education Limited, 2006). amzn.to/2uWmK9F
