To me UNLV would be an absolutely perfect move for basketball and football. This needs to happen.
Id way rather Memphis and Tulane than Nevada.
Agreed. I don't mind UNLV, but I want no part of UNR. Basically no budget.
Neither Nevada school gets much from state funds. No state income tax. Unlv just has a higher population so they have more pockets to support their athletic department. Without the Raiders they would be at Sam Boyd stadium in Henderson.
@@russrichards6685 Agreed. Saw a UNLV fan recently boasting about having the best facilities. If the Raiders move again that won't last long.
@@russrichards6685well that's not the case, they play in the best stadium in football college or pros 🤷.
Canzano and Wilmer is the best thing out there. They have their ears to the ground and know PAC 12 sports better than anyone. When they or he says something it is most likely based upon something concrete. And this is from someone who bashed Canzano all the time in the past. Keep up the good work Puck.
Lots of assumptions no facts.
UNLV sucks.
Without having watched. Canzano’s observations are worth a listen. The PAC-12 is dead, but I’m glad OSU and WSU are doing what they can to build a conference.
@@BetterDays-e8hthe PAC-12 of old is dead but the new one can survive
Sounds like we agree. I’ve live in a time of 2+2=5. For me the Big Ten is no longer the Big Ten, the ACC no longer the ACC and the Pac-12 no longer the PAC-12 up is down, men are women, and the Mountain West +2 is the PAC 12. I understand business and contracts enough they can do this, but for me the PAC-12 is dead and gone. I like OSU and WSU too, wish them well, I was hoping they’d be more creative, but here we are. Gonzaga is a good add for BB
Memphis, UTSA, Tulane, should be priority. The PAC needs to be creative and establish a better deal than the AAC can offer. Then go after UNLV.
It’s obvious that the Pac does not really want the AAC schools. Looks like they would rather go with schools out west.
Why not UNLV immediately? UNLV just wants more money. But I would prioritize Memphis because they are solid in both basketball and football
@@darrellrichardson8636 I think they want the AAC schools, they just have to keep working out numbers to make it worthwhile for both the PAC and desired AAC schools. Hopefully this happens.
I agree with Puck as to the quality of ESPN+.
I agree with John as to Pac12 Enterprises. I believe it is a sleeping giant.
Nope football shouldn’t be separate … we need to stop trying to pretend college football is nfl junior and save college football
Pac 12 wouldn't take Nevada if their life depended on it! Also, the AAC had one of the worst viewerships in football. I wonder if Memphis and Tulane make the switch once the AAC has to renew their media rights deal and ESPN offers them less $$
Well they took Fresno which is a glorified community college. Same with BSU
@russrichards6685 Obviously, you don't watch football because Fresno State has been in the AP polls over many, many times! And we've beaten tons of power 5 teams! Tell me how many power teams has Nevada beaten? Or in the top of the Mountian West? Fresno State has produced not just NFL players but also MLB MVP players and NBA PLAYERS!
@ but it’s Fresno.
@@FresnoState101 Joel Bitonio. 7th pro bowl with the Browns.
Yet Boise and Fresno regularly pull in 35-40K home attendance and have respectable TV Viewership. Nevada hasn't been able to average 18K for Home attendance or get any decent TV Viewership for several years now.
Just a lot of speculation until anything really happens.
The key for the Pac is to balance the number of Centrals with the Pacific/Mountains (no Leastern Time Zones!) to keep jetlag and travel minimized (unlike the idiots at the Big "18" and especially the ACC). That means becoming a Pac-16 AND skipping UNLV.
Pacific/Mountain: *Oregon State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Washington State, Boise State, Utah State, San Diego State, Gonzaga* (no football).
Central: *Texas State, Rice, Memphis, Tulsa* (or Alabama-Birmingham), *Texas-San Antonio, North Texas, Tulane, Wichita State* (no football).
St Mary’s is not a good PAC option. Their only positive is a coach, everything else is a massive negative. Theres like 3 different schools I’d rather see join before St Mary’s.
Canzano is a I a smarter than you guy , way to sure of himself
Giants fan badmouthing the Dodgers. What a surprise.
New Mexico is a decent pickup. Top 50 media market and a decent fan base. Instead of St. Mary’s, invite Grand Canyon instead
New Mexico? No way. No chance on any of those three. New Mexico is decent but they are at their ceiling. They don't try to grow their athletics programs. And pac12 is done adding basketball only. Gonzaga was a special exception. UNLV, Nevada, Air Force, Memphis, Tulane are the primary targets.
@ I think it would be better to have a 10-12 model. Have ten full sports members and 12 all other sports members. Grand Canyon is in Phoenix. I am sure the PAC-12 would not mind having a presence in Phoenix.
@@misteroughtright5557possibly for adding a large TV market and an even number of teams for scheduling., but not sure it's worth it.GCU has almost no program history. All they can claim is making the tournament the last couple years. But at least they're leadership is ambitious.
@@johnv1927 history? GCU is a growing brand and have demonstrated a commitment to athletics. Facilities are world class and plus, if need be, can use the Phoenix Suns’ stadium to accommodate larger crowds
Greatest sports POD in the PNW
Why is Texas State University is not listed? Interesting.
I idea why John continues to pitch Nevada, I don’t see any way that the Pac12 wants them. UNLV, well ok. But I think the Texas schools are in play.
thanks for the info on the future of the PAC-12. Sorry to be so off topic Jason, but I see you are a Seattle man. What do you hear about NBA expansion and a possible Sonics return?
We haven’t heard much lately about the ACC and Florida State. Is the PAC 12 holding out a glimmer of hope that Cal and Stanford may want to return to the PAC 12 in the next couple of years?
The NFL had Wellington Mara. MLB has never had forward -thinking leadership like that.
if UNLV and possibly Nevada leave the MWC, who should/would the MWC go after get back to 8 schools?
Edit your title.
It says loser instead of closer.
sadly, it seems more accurate that way
great catch...thank you
Going to be unlv Texas st and St Marys ( I would love to try for Crichton to make a elite bb league)
Cougs haven’t played Pepperdine yet.
Interesting Canzano is now pro UNR (Nevada) joining Pac-12. Wonder what changed?
I don't get that either. IMHO they are one of the teams that the departing 5 were trying to get away from. Limited budget, no real fan support or TV Viewership.
Wayne Tinkle cannot validate anything with one game at home, he has to actually accomplish something on the road and in the postseason.
I really don't think the PAC will get a big enough deal to lure AAC teams plus cover the payouts. Memphis, Tulane, and all other AAC teams are likely off the table, especially with a condensed timeline. UNLV & Tx St. are much more realistic additions. This isn't Conzano's first time painting better than realistic pictures for the PAC. (cough)
AAC teams need a two-year notice to cut the exit fees down. Once again, it's all about bleeding as much money out of those piece of shit networks responsible for the mess the NCAA is in!
A lot of it depends on which AAC teams they are looking at. The newer Texas teams in the AAC are earning a lot less than the established teams. Also it's possible they grab 1-2 teams that you mentioned to get to the minimum and then add the AAC teams a year later to get the lower exit fees.
@jesterscorner879 Memphis, Tulane, UTSA, and USF are talking to the ACC as replacements for UNC, FSU, Clemson & Miami. UNC & ESPN have been planning this for a while now, and they've let the cat out of the bag (look it up). So these teams are off the table because they're expecting a power invite sooner than later. Possibly UNT would be an option after the other AAC teams leave, but the PAC media deal is still an uncertainty that needs to be solved.
@@kafkakaraoke Haven't heard that UTSA is in the mix. but it will need a lot of dominoes to fall for UNC. NCST and everybody to start moving. This is all ESPN doing the rumors and not the schools themselves. So take it from with a grain of salt.
Wyoming... not a bad option
It’s hard to know what to take seriously when you both downplayed the 4 corners to Big 12 for so long. Yeah it happened quickly, but the claims that no one was going to leave for the Big 12 was BS. The truth is no matter what teams they add whether MW or otherwise isn’t going to be lucrative
UCLA, USC, Washington, Oregon in the Big "18," and especially Stanford and California in the ACC is so far NOT lucrative either in ALL sports! Just ask Mick Cronin.
@retrocollegiategaming9521 My thoughts exactly. Besides, there's little to no chance the PAC gains enough leverage to entice any AAC schools.
Doesn't ESPN+ just re-broadcasts the feed produced by each individual institution? Quality production is the responsibility of the host.
For the majority of broadcasts, yes, ESPN+ is providing just the graphics/presentation packages. However, there are some exceptions. The XII and AAC for instance use ESPN production crews for Football which is why the quality of those broadcasts are generally better than rest of ESPN+'s catalogue.
@@reverend_wintondupree True, but in the instance Puck is referencing, lack of quality production in the Wazzu vs Pepperdine game, it’s a Pepperdine / WCC issue, not ESPN+.
Go Dodgers! Lol!
“Best in the West” has already been accomplished, I don’t know why Canzano and Wilner continue to fixate on it so hard. Canzano framed it kind of like an either/or scenario and I hope the new PAC isn’t so stupid to refuse to expand into central time again 3rd time if they actually do have that ability.
As long as it's not Leastern Time Zone universities like South Florida and UConn, AND they balance out by getting a number of Central's equal to the number of west's (this means no UNLV), then yes.
The PAC needs to stop being so cheap and pay all of UNLV’s exit fees if they really want them.
Perhaps they are broke? They are already dealing with FIVE other Mountain West traitors already.
That would not go well with Boise State, Fresno State, etc if those schools had to pay their own exit fees yet the PAC 12 paid UNLV's fee for them.
