Aikido training in virtually all styles follows a series of rituals. Students seldom question the techniques and assumptions that underlie what they are taught. As a result, poor training habits can gain a foothold and are perpetuated over generations.
Stanley Pranin takes a look at the simple katatedori -- the single-hand grab -- and proposes that we rethink our range of responses to gain an immediate advantage. This sets the stage for a successful execution of techniques.
This video series has been instrumental into me gaining better insights into my practice of karatedo. Believe it or not, we have the exact same issues when doing our goshinjutsu routines! Hmm.... Fascinating! And thanks!
Who would possibly dislike this video?
RIP Stanley Pranin
Would somebody aikdo show somebody like me who's curious the exact hand and thumb placements?
When you doing tenkan, first lag must be rearranged little to the side, DO NOT ROTATE, as show on video.
necessary to leave the line of attack completely. . if you rotate your leg, you wiil staying on the line of attack !
SENSEI wouldn't it be difficult to pull uke out with the right arm to take him off balance- if he is very strong?. is there a secret i should look for? valentin from butokuden.
Martial Arts means kicking ass is an Art
Ass whooping with a little style grace!
Pranin Sensei's key words - totally off-balanced, subtle... so he does'nt know it. Part of the comprehension of the phenomenon of ki. Hidden as always in plain sight.
Dangerous situation? Someone grabbing your wrist at arms length? Come on now...
+cestus66 Someone is trying to control you, that is a dangerous situation. If you are a woman and your wrist is being grabbed before being dragged into a car, off a path, that's a dangerous situation. There are a myriad situations where a wrist grab is the start of a dangerous situation.
+plonk7 He's not saying the wrist grab isn't dangerous, but the arm's length that was used in the demo. Very few people intent on harming someone would grab them at arm's length. They would come closer so they can apply more strength on the grab. Arms-length grabs are weaker and put the attacker's arm in a vulnerable outstretched position.
+Tze-wei Lim "Very few people" - who are these people of whom you talk? Of course there are a myriad of different scenarios that might happen. The attacker might be highly trained, or not. Every scenario created is open to this sort of criticism. If the attacker had stepped in more deeply to make the grab then the technique applied would alter.
plonk7 Didn't you just repeat what I said? Very few people means NOBODY would do that.
plonk7 Good luck with "altering the technique" when you fear for your life and the adrenalin dump kicks in.
