- Action is certainly lacking, as the Nerd reviews another bad game that won't easily die - Die Hard for the NES. This is Angry Video Game Nerd Episode 28.
What happens when one of the most successful action movies of the 80's gets turned into a video game? You guessed it, it gets fucked up beyond belief. The Nerd takes his video game turn as John McClane, famously portrayed by Bruce Willis in the film Die Hard (1988). Only the John McClane in the game isn't the tough guy on the silver screen. He appears to have this strange limp as well as a Foot Power bar. How many games have you played that have a health bar for your feet?
So through the different levels of the building, bad guys are coming at you left and right, and they're all incredibly lethal, as are the windows in the building and on the outside. And the graphics are so putrid, it pretty much comes down to trial and error as to what you can walk over or run into. You're essentially racing against the clock to get throughout the levels of the building. But around every corner, there are guys hidden in the darkness, so be prepared to get shot, a lot.
You can ride the elevator up and down through the different floors, killing bad guys and collecting items. You can get roof access and find a rope, but don't try to use it, because John McClane simply won't oblige. So after more running around, The Nerd gets fed up and goes on a killing spree. Stiff controls and bullets from every which way lead The Nerd to his ultimate boiling point, Yippie-Ki-Yay, M*ther***ker!

AVGN is one of the few creators that no matter how long the video has been out you can always enjoy it as though it was a new one. It has a sense of timelessness.

The Steve Urkel thing is an easter egg reference to an urban legend that Die Hard and Family Matters takes place in the same universe and the cop is the same character in each.
I guess that's why he has a different name in the series. Genius.

The actual reason is that Urkel doesn't appear in the game, it's just a gag James (aka the Nerd) threw in because Theo in the game's cutscenes looks kinda like Urkel.

ok.... i played 1 in one session... without problems... i was high though maybe that helped i dunno. the powerplant in 2 gives me headaches tho.... but not from motion sickness :'D

This will always rank up there as one of the best AVGN episodes. I can't believe it has less views than ones like McKids or Nintendo Power. It's so fucking epic. Not only are the special effects at the end awesome but the delivery of his lines through the whole episode are fucking perfect.

The enthusiasm and nitpicking of his old vids is still so refreshing to this day.
This is one of my all time favorite episodes. I especially love the fast pace of this and some of the other ones made around this time.

The locks are from the safe in the movie when they were breaking into it.
I think this game looks very ambitious for its time. The locks instead of a simple clock are a nice touch, and they did all they could to make the game resemble the movie, with the limited and known number of bad guys, the foot power, the locks, etc. The "fog of war" is a pretty smart mechanic too, enemies don't notice you before you see them. Maybe the game is impossible due to the firepower the enemies have, and the bad controls, but it really does look like it could have been a classic.
This video has more explosions than a michael bay movie.

1:17 According to wikipedia, the release dates for Die Hard the game for Amiga/Dos/NES were around 1990-1992 (It is multi-platform apparently) and the 9/11 attacks were a decade later.

It builds suspense by keeping you guessing what's around the corner, just like any modern action or horror game.

Regarding what the nerd says about characters talking back to the player (around 6:24...) Actually, in Sierra a Lucas Arts graphic adventures characters talk back to the players all the time (especially to tell him or her that they are not going to perform certain action that the player commanded)

He actually gets a lot of details wrong about this game. For example, the timer running out takes you to the final boss battle with any reminding bad guys. I'm also not sure why he is so surprised that jumping out of a 32nd-floor window kills you.

What an elaborate game, I think it looks awesome. Intense. It's like Metal Gear Solid but with more action. Way beyond what's usually on the NES shoot'em'up rack.
