I loved Vanguard with the robotic speech in the arcade in the early 80s, and this was a cool Atari game, too. We played these games until we could get back into the arcades!!
This wasn't just an arcade game, it was an arcade game from SNK. Yes, Terry Bogard, Mai Shiranui, Metal Slug SNK. Cult leader Keith Raniere was called "Vanguard" by his followers because this was his favorite game. I saw a couple of kids playing this on one of those Atari plugin TV consoles in a Target in 2006. They were kind of transfixed by it, despite likely not having been born when the N64 came out, let alone when the 2600 was current. I thought, today's kids are gonna be all right.

The arcade was so excellent for me as a kid. Lots of music and a strange voice for the stages. Loved getting to the UFO's (the"eggs") the music was extra perky and it went diagonally. But yeah I had this too just because the arcade was so great. I have no idea what was going on with going inside the circle ships for points.
@@timstinyarcade170 Yes, although from what I remember, there wasn't much difference. I saw it one time, but that was probably because I was too young to go to arcades when it was newer.
The music was from the Flash Gordon movie. I have to say they did a pretty decent job of replicating the arcade experience. After the Atari Pac-Man reception, which was a 4K game, almost all future games were 8K or more. Vanguard is also an 8K game.

Love this game on the 2600. First played Vanguard arcade game in the front of a grocery store.
