Tim, Decathlon is one of the GREATEST Atari 2600 games of all time! My friends and I used to have competitions playing this one. Such an AMAZING game! The only problem with Decathlon was the extreme blisters we'd get playing it. Palming the top of the Atari 2600 joystick and it grinding into the middle of your hand would eventually hurt you and you'd have to stop playing for a week to heal. Eventually, we started tying a sock around our hand as a buffer, which did help, and is just a testament to how go good this game is. I even like it over the arcade game Track And Field. And here's a crazy fact when it comes to me. Still, to this day, there isn't another Olympic style video game I enjoy more than Decathlon on the Atari 2600. That's saying something :) vgv
Hi! I...have the World Record on Decathlon(12,038), and top times/distances on most individual events. Hope to give you a chuckle here-we actually use CX-22's now, lol, trackballs, and YES, it does take a bit away from the spirit of the game, but you don't destroy controllers. It's not EASY, but maxing the meter IS doable, so it becomes a different game, you are focusing on the release points/button presses. I collect the Activision patches and CIB's, the Silver Decathlon was my most recent pickup, so I have all three! Now-I DO love this game, but my favorite is actually the "Games" games from Epyx, mostly on C64, lotta "thinkers", not button mashers. NOW-I use the trackball because it's "how we do it" now. I am a really, really fast button tapper, years of guitar, so I CAN "beat myself to heck" to do well on a game, but truly, the trackball makes Decathlon more fun.
To me that's kinda surprising. I've earned, even, "most" of them, and River Raid was far from the easiest to me-NOW-strokes and folks, I'm actually not nearly as good at River Raid as I am many other Activision titles, but I remember having to work for this one, and might have ONLY barely eked out the patch score.
