Thank you for actually acknowledging the issues with this product line. I'm tired of seeing those sponsored videos from people who keep blindly advertising for ubiquiti without acknowledging the huge downsides, buggy firmware and missing features that were advertised. For example, good luck trying to vpn in to a udm pro on an android device. It won't work. It's completely broken. Want to see what clients are using your vpn, too bad.

My Dream Machine crashed 3 times and I could not take it anymore. I am still using my UniFi access point, but I’m done with the Dream Machine. I am now just using the AT&T modem/router as the main router (it is required anyway). I set up a raspberry pi as my UniFi controller and that can be used to manage the access points. It actually works surprisingly well.

Fellow Comcast Gigabit Pro subscriber here, the UDM Pro wasn't out at the time of my installation 4 years ago. I went the Dell R210 II pfsense route, nary a hiccup from it from day 1. I have been following your Comcast journey and hadn't considered the UDM Pro until I saw your videos. I do run Unifi in wall AP and Wifi6 LR's so it naturally makes sense to go full Unifi but after this video....I might hold off a bit longer lol. Thanks for sharing and keep the videos coming.

A couple of things to note:
    - SSH needs to be explicitly enabled and when you do you set a password just for that. The UN and PW you use elsewhere are unrelated.
    - Once you SSH in if I remember correctly the command to restart just the controller if the UI becomes unresponsive is "Unifi-OS restart". Doing that won't take you offline.
    - I am familiar with this because I have a UDMP and have had to do this many times. In my experience, the gateway portion of the UDM products is not the issue. The problem is completely with the controller. From what I have read online, there is some sort of controller memory leak that causes the problems. This is more often seen on the UDM than the UDMP because of the amount of RAM they have. This is a long-time bug that has been known since the controller was in beta testing and has still not been resolved.
In the end, these problems made me ditch the UDM for pfSense and I have never been happier with the decision. I am still using unifi access points and switches, but now with a controller running in docker on my server with no problems. pfSenese has just been perfect as well. I got an old intel 4000-series i5 SFF computer with 8gb of ram and a SSD for about $120, threw an old decommissioned intel dual SFP+ card in it, and for well under the price of a UDMP I have something endlessly more capable (and overpowered doesnt even begin to describe the hardware I used for the application). Although pfSense is technically more complicated, I actually found it easier to use because everything just worked as you would assume it would. Especially when you start setting up firewall rules between VLANS unifi isnt the greatest when you want to start locking stuff down. pfSense never had that issue.

I honestly was considering moving to this, but like you, I have a career and don't have time for "breakware" recovery, lousy CS or trolling self help forum posts.
I'm glad you posted this. They are off my short list, the same as Arlo and Nest, for similar reasons.
If I am forced to start from scratch, why start doing it with the same vendor merely to end where I was 24 hours ago. I'll pick someone new and expect them to be better.

Firmware 1.9.3 is dreadful. I upgraded from 1.8..6 for a critical security fix, but it creamed my system. You have to either revert back to 1..8.6 or go to one of the recent betas. Backup first of course, but beta firmware 1.10.13 has been solid for me. The memory leaks and random reboots seem to be under control in this beta. Happy hunting!

I got my UDMP in March of 2020. I do not recall any major issues. I have automatic updates turned off. Only boot issues I had was when I started using Protect a few months after I setup my UDMP. Currently running 1.9.3 with controller 6.1.71. Overall it has been very good. My setup is straight forward, main network, IoT network and a guest network. Only think I do is reboot every few weeks because the memory usage creeps up over time. But I have not had the controller crash from high memory usage. Overall I am happy with the UDMP and how it works and the interface compared to the Netgear routers I have been using. For home use I think the UDMP is great for someone that wants more detail from their router.

Since watching this, I made sure my UDM Pro was upgraded to the latest and then disabled automatic updates again. Somehow, I've managed to avoid these pitfalls but I'm definitely going to heed your warning. Thank you Lon!

My udmp stopped working as a result of automatic updates last year and I had to send it to unifi by filling out the r m a form, in 2 weeks they sent me a new one and I had to update it using ssh , after that I turned off automatic updates for ubiquity products. No problems after that but now I’m thinking about pfsense😆

Been there twice as well, remember the protect is a seperate backup from the controller. Sometimes support sucks, other times they are very helpfull, there"s s big difference in who you get, and how fast you are transferred to 2nd level.

I install a TON of Ubiquiti gear but we NEVER use the UDM stuff in a production environment. We have one in our office for testing and stuff but we would never use it for a business. We either install PFSense or go with Ubiquiti's edgemax gear. Also, we run our own controller, we never allow cloud access to ui dot com

Same! After 3 times, I ended up just installing UniFi headless on a raspberry pi and using my AT&T router as the main router. It works well. All the access points work perfectly fine, it was really just the UDM giving me problems.

Totally agree. I have the UDM base and have gone back to my old Google WiFi, I just can't get the WiFi to be as good even with a WiFi 6 AP because of having to mess around with settings. But mine auto updates and after the last one my iPad Pro started losing DNS every time it went to sleep?? As soon as I put my Google WiFi in it was instantly fixed! I have better things to do then mess around with this so I may get the Amplifi Alien instead.

I passed on getting a dream machine based on reports of buggy software, lack of WiFi 6 support, and price to build out the solution I wanted. Ended up going the other direction and got a great prime day deal on three eero 6 routers. Improved WiFi coverage and performance but lacks in configuration.

I have had something simular but not as bad. I have had to do at least 4 power pulls within 6 months of using it. Twice where the controller just would not respond. Then a power pull after a few firmware updates. I would not to update off site. I don't trust the UDM to recover. I have also had to do power pulls on APs also because they just with off line. All in all I am still really a big UBNT fan. For the price and what you get it is the best bang for the buck especially for DYI people and small businesses. But if you like to tinker it is fine.

I moved away from UniFi gear more than a year ago and don’t miss it at all. The quality of their software was getting pretty bad when I left and it looks like it hasn’t gotten any better.
I moved to pfSense for routing and it’s been solid. I have a Zyxel NWA-210AX WiFi 6 AP that has better coverage than the three UniFi APs I had before.

This isn't a criticism of you, Lon, and I totally understand why you'd want to have a network that you don't have to constantly manage, but auto updates are generally terrible in my opinion. I have heard way too many stories of updates ruining things, and auto updates make it worse because you never know when those bad things will happen or why. In addition to hearing many horror stories, I've experienced plenty of bad updates myself. I've had software get corrupted, operating systems break, features messed up, etc. There have been plenty of broken updates irresponsibly released, and auto updating just means you get unpleasant surprises when you least expect them. I learned quickly to never trust auto updates. Yes, there are security issues in some cases, but I find most security comes from how things are set up overall and I have little reason to worry with my set up, but that's just me. It's just a shame that they get people to enable automatic updates for security when it often comes at the cost of stability or basic usability. Bugs happen, but they're far too common and we shouldn't be used as beta testers.

UDM-Pro gives me trouble and headaches. Too many eggs in one basket, having to reboot or reset one thing takes down the whole network. That's actually part of the first reason I went to Unifi so I could have separate devices and not have the All-In-One issues like people have with home routers and etc. I'm back to using the USG-PRO-4 with CloudKey-G2-PLUS. Passes anywhere from 3-8 TB data month. I have a friend also still using a USG-PRO-4 that uses 12+TB data month. Just bought a UNVR-PRO, and now I'm waiting for that to arrive so I can separate my video recordings. Best believe if or more of actually when I try the Unifi Access line that I will also put that on its own CloudKey-G2-Plus

Even in consumer network equipment like the stuff from Asus firmware updates break things. Things seem to break when a new firmware needs to be updated and then again when the firmware is updated. It’s like programmed obsolescence.
The Asus iMesh thing was a bad experience with it breaking on my equipment and it suddenly not being available on a fair bit of my hardware anymore because Asus dropped it on my hardware, but was still selling the same equipment advertising iMesh on it. It had me stop using Asus for networking altogether. Searching for equipment to reliably hook up to my ISPs Gigabit modem still.

My advice: separate router/firewall and switching. If your router fails, your internal vlans, port channels, etc will remain up and still function. Let your router just route the traffic and be the gateway for your network. Also look on other "open source" alternatives for router/firewall like opnsense or pfsense. Spin a VM and you are good to go.

I still love Ubiquiti unifi products but I'm still on 1.8.6 for this reason . My father so has a UDM pro but it's on the latest 1.9.3 but he is only running the controller nothing else so possibly there's a memory leak and other issues when running other containers that the UDM pro runs. Since it utilizes docker containers to run it almost sounds like the node crashes and folks then are unable to login.. stay on 1.8.6 to can manually upgrade to it I'd your on older firmware.

Based on s4everal reports and reviews I have look at this month it is still beta ware. Until I can get 99.99 reliability oout of it I am content to wait an less other people work the kinks out. I am currently deploying Mikrotic firewalls and switch products and they are about 1/2 the costs of Unifi and don't need a controller.

UDM (non-pro) user here that uses the device remotely. Had the same issue, twice leading to a need to be physically present. Support told me it wasn't common and now I find out that, in fact, it is. I hadn't heard of the breach either. Love the idea, execution is somewhat questionable. Certainly doesn't speak well for any enterprise, and any SMB doesn't need the hassle. Summary: Cheap home entry into advanced router with a nice gui but questionable execution.
