Mike's Favorite Blue Inks! (2024)

- I just realized a little while ago that I had never picked any favorite blues. The truth is that I've been intimidated by the sheer number of great blue inks in my collection, and I didn't want to have to pick against any of them. But: I've done it! I made hard cuts. I didn't subdivide it too much, and I didn't make it a Top 20. Are there some extras? Sure. Whatever. It's my list!
Some of these categories are really specific, but that's how my colodex is organized, so that's what we get! These aren't in a particular order, and sometimes there are more than 5. Honorable mentions are always an option!

** These inks come from all over. Vendors, brands, stores I bought them from, friends, viewers. All that. I try not to let that sort of thing color my reviews. What you see is what I got. Thanks for the support, Patrons! **

This is a great collection of blues! A lot of them would be on my list too... Horizon Blue and Supernova are both a couple of my favorites. My bottle of Poor Man's Sapphire has a nice color but it's a very dry writer, so I rarely use it... probably works well in certain pens, though. I bought a bottle of Tsuwairo in Japan last year and love it... and it was cheap... I don't know why it's not easily available here. For a permanent blue, Noodler's Baltimore Canyon Blue is excellent, and for a medium blue Pennonia Kekek Kekje is another nice one. I'm about to order a bottle of that Kala... looks beautiful! Glad you're enjoying the Rainier Blue 🙂
My favourite is Troublemaker's “Lam-Ang”. It’s such a rich, deep Ultramarine and has a gorgeous bronze sheen. (And I don't like blue blues at all, this one changed my mind completely)
That sounds really neat! I haven't seen that one yet, but I like the concept a lot.
I love all the blues you chose. I’m impressed that you were able to whittle the list down to nine. That shows remarkable self-control.
lol, thanks! It was real hard to narrow it that far!
Noodler’s Baystate Blue is hands down my all time favorite blue. I know about and understand why people have issues with this ink but I have yet to find another blue that comes close to the electric vibrancy of Baystate Blue.
I think this one from Amarillo and Pennonia is real close, and it doesn't have any of the other bothersome things attached to it.
I think my favorite ink in this category is Bungubox Sapphire. I also like Soda Pop Blue. That Anderillium ink looks pretty great.
I’m quite fond of blue ink (blue-blacks even more)…I reckon I still have more blues than I need or would ever use.
To name just a handful of my top favorite blues: Aurora Blue, Visconti Blue, Monteverde Horizon Blue, Montegrappa Blue, Sailor Seiboku, Sailor Manyo Konagi.
I adore blue-blacks too. Do you have any favorite Blue-Blacks that are on the more wet side? A lot of them seem to be more on the dry side of things.
Both of you have great taste in ink colors. I love blue-black inks.
I do love a blue black, for sure. I'm surprised to see Aurora Blue on a list! It was so dry and unpleasant when I tried it. What do you like using it in?
@@inkdependence I love the look of Aurora Blue on the page. It is dry but seems to work very well in the pens I’ve paired it with. For at least a year now, I’ve been using Aurora Blue in my lovely, slim Aurora Hastil pen with a superb 14k M nib. And in my OMAS Paragon pen with an 18k M nib. Almost all the Aurora inks I’ve tried seem to be dry-ish, overall. But I still like them.
Thanks for the shout out buddy, and I was stoked to see Mathew himself commented on this video, so I know he got to see that he made the list with rainier blue! Good choices my man!
Thanks! I've got all of his inks in pens right now, and they're all awesome.
Lamy Crystal Azurite & Diamine Imperial Blue ❤
Solid choices.
Akkerman Shocking Blue (#6). Private Reserve American Blue, yes, but also PR DC Supershow blue.
Yeah, all good blues!
Yes, there is added controversy and some call it purple, but there is no blue like Baystate blue.
Yeah, I tried it once. It wasn't for me.
Wow. Haven't bought since 2014.
All of a sudden no Inks I own even are here. That's crazy.
I haven't heard of any of these ...
I have private reserve old I just found out what happened to them
Diamine majestic blue with red sheen is awesome and noodlers liberty Elysium is awesome. .
But again I'm going on 12 year old colors 😢
Yeah, inks have exploded since 2014. Private Reserve went through a few different hands before ending up where they are.
Majestic Blue is great, but that field has become SO big that it doesn't really stand out any longer. Diamine still does awesome sheeny blues, though.
Noodler's LE was pretty good back when it came out, but the formula is inconsistent and the guy behind the brand has been pretty publicly awful, so lots of folks have fallen off of his bandwagon for various reasons.
No reason not to use the inks you love, but there are lots of great inks out there to try out right now, and samples through the mail make it much easier than it used to be!
At the moment I'm hooked on J. Herbin's Rue de la Verrerie. I really like the nice dark, rich blue color on the page.
So many Herbin favorites in these comments!
I love Diamine Blue Velvet. It was one of this FP inks early on that made me realize what was different about FPs and I still love it every time I put it in a pen.
That's a lovely sort of memory. I think the one that did that for me was one of the Private Reserves I got back in the 90s. Probably Black Cherry?
After watching for 6 minutes 50 seconds I've come to the conclusion, ... they're all blue inks. Thanks.
Facts. They're all blue. It would have been weird if they weren't right?
@@inkdependence Sorry. I just couldn't get excited by the minute differences in these inks. I do enjoy your vids. Caught me on a bad day I guess.
My husband’s favorite blue is Herbin Éclat De Saphir and mine is Herbin Bleu De Minuit. On a related note, my favorite blue black is Waterman Mysterious Blue, followed closely by Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo.
Huh. I'd never thought of Mysterious Blue as a blue-black. More like a blue green sort of ink, as I remember. I haven't done the blue-blacks, yet, but I will one day.
@@inkdependenceWell, I think they categorize it as their blue black. Also, the formula changed a while back, so it’s not quite as teal-ish medium as it used to be. I still prefer the older version, but they’re both good. It’s the ink I use for my vintage pens.
The Wet Pen has arrived! Matthew only introduced four colors, I’m begging him for more, but good choice snd nice recognition. I like Maiori tuchese portenope, a bright, shading tropical water blue. But congrats to Matthew at Wet Pen for getting recognized.
He made great inks, and a friend sent me a sample of each (I thought there were only three?) because they are all sold out for now.
@@inkdependence …I think you may be right on the number of shades; I only have Deception Pass myself.
Some great recommendations. I'm just starting out exploring inks but a definite favourite already is Nahvalur Atlantic Blue. Really gorgeous.
Atlantic Blue is really nice, but be aware that it's a little on the dry side. So if you put it in a dry nib you won't love it, but it's great for taming wet nibs, and it's a cool color.
Tough category. These are all lovely. I'll have to follow up on the Anderillium ink, as that one looks famtastic. I have a sample of the PenBBS Santorini Blue and I agree that its stunning; I wish I had a bottle.
It's SUCH a hard category. There are so many blues, and they are so often great.
Great group of blues! I have far too many blues and love them all. Yes! The Wet Pen Ranier Blue is one of my new favorites as well as Deception Pass and Elliott Bay. Great inks!
Agreed!
