    I would suggest you attach a mirror to the back of the door, then a space for set of drawers or cubes.

      That's a fabulous idea Carol. Definitely something that I'll do. Mirrors take up so much valuable floor space in a room.

    Love a personal sewing room. I recently found a used 5 ft 8 drawer dresser for 75 $. I made two different sizes of ironing boards. I plan to refinish the dresser and paint it light gray. There is plenty of room for my cutting mat and the smaller ironing board at the same time. I put casters on it with locks. I like how tall it is and it doesn't hurt my back bending over it. I wanted an island like yours but couldn't afford it. You will enjoy all the space and visuals of your items to keep you creative. One object I would add is surround sound for music or an audio book. I feel a person's sewing space is personal to them.

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs
      @ChristinesHomeAffairs  2 роки тому

      The ironing board & mat I have are still to find a suitable location Melanie. I'm considering attaching the board to some drawers. I did have a sound system in my tiny room, but mostly use my ear buds and phone for audio to save on space. 😀

    When you have the electrician in, add an outlet to the ceiling- this is awesome for plugging in an iron, or anything electrical and not having cords across the floor. That would give you access to electrical even on your island.

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs
      @ChristinesHomeAffairs  Рік тому

      That's a great tip! Chris and I discussed doing this for the iron, but I'll have too much else hanging from the ceiling. The room should be finished this week 😃

      I definitely plan on going up Sue. There's so much valuable wall space still left to use. I'll definitely miss the view, and the birds. There's a small space outside where I'll hang some nice plants one day 🙂

    Ohhh, a new machine to review, I’m so excited for you & the review! I would research online what IKEA offers as it looks like you are already pretty well setup without making the trip to Melbourne. Unless you are going to get the IKEA pegboard & accessories. But then you will be limited to always buying their accessories, a local sourced pegboard with accessories may be the better option. One idea…switch out the island cube connectors for a sliding locking connector & add 4 more casters to the island. This way you can unlock the island & move it out of the room when you need to convert the room for overnight guests. You can still add drop down leafs on the end, they will just have to be divided too & locked when in use. I’m guessing you could easily hide those island pieces in your former front sewing room while the new room is occupied.

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs
      @ChristinesHomeAffairs  2 роки тому

      Haha, I think I'll send guests out to the old sewing room before I give them my new room. It's a great idea to enable the island to split in two. Chris and I did discuss that option. When I get the top built, I think I'll make that removeable so it can store flat and out of the way. 😁

    Congratulations for your new room! The island is really great. The mirror has such a nice shape, why not painting it? Either with real nice colours or just "chalky" colour so it looks lighter. Have you considered putting hanging shelves to the walls to store things? I have it in the bedroom and living room and it gives me more "floor-space" to move around. If you use white doors on it, it won't give you the feeling thet the room is too packed, don't worry. Especially above your machines hanging shelves would make good use of the space and almost hide in that wardrobe- corner. The hanging kitchen elements from Ikea (also called "Metod" in Australia?) are quite stable - provided the wall is strong enough to hold it 😉 ..and under the bottom of such hanging shelves you could easily attach a good working light like in a kitchen counter. Let's see which creative ideas of yourself and others you can implement 🙂 Have fun! Love, Lale

    I picked up some gridwall (5 feet x 2 feet) from a store that was going out of business. I just got the wall mounts for it, and I have hooks & a couple shelves as well. My plan is to mount it sideways on the wall for my rulers, templates, scissors etc. My crafting room is quite small, I need to go vertical as well.

    At the other end of your central workspace, under the 'over-hang', maybe some hooks to hang any long rulers you may have? I'm guessing you'll get to keep (and buy of course) that new sewing machine - sound like you are already smitten with it and with all your hard work over the past year I think you deserve it! I like your plastic storage boxes - so handy - I would keep them. Looking forward to the next instalment of your studio update 🤩

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs
      @ChristinesHomeAffairs  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks Lesley. I'm really hoping to keep that machine too. My original plan was to have pegboard at each end of my island, but then came up with the drop down side idea. I also think that as the room is still a little small, I would end up getting caught on the pegs as I walk around the table (I'm a bit of a clutz). I also have to keep things out of Coco's reach. She takes off with everything 🤣

    This looks great! I like what you've done so far. I would only suggest turning your sewing machine to face outward. I don't know how you feel about it but I don't like not being able to see if someone is behind me or coming into my room. Also, a machine facing outward would allow long pieces being sewn together to flow over the edge of the sewing table instead of bunching up against the wall. I hope this helps.

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs
      @ChristinesHomeAffairs  2 роки тому

      I agree with you. I tried bringing my machines out away from the wall so that I am looking into the room, but it loses so much valuable space. The wall it's on now, is a wardrobe nook right next to the entry, so I dont have my back to the entrance. Though my back is to the window, and i don't like that either. It may yet change though as I've made sure shelving is small enough for me to move about when the urge strikes me 😀

    I wonder if you might consider placing your island perpendicular and close to your window with the extension on the opposite side from the window. I tried that Susan, and as long as I have the bench close to the window it will work. Asthetically though, I think the bench looks better the orientation it is now, but if I do have the drop down top, I may need to change it. Once I've put the other cabinets and shelves in, I'll have a play and see what I like best 😀

    Love what you’ve done so far. Kmart sells cube storage. The 2x4 units were $39 each. I don’t know if they are close to you or if you would consider them as an option. Check them out online and see what you think. I couldn’t afford IKEA at the time I was setting up my rooms. You might also find a “bed” for Coco there (Kmart) too. Castors on these shelving units I have also found useful. My mistake was to only use castors on the 4 cube units. Can’t wait to see what you do next and the review on the new machine.
    I have filled my units with cubes which I bought from Bunnings. I got the colour I wanted in the numbers I needed. The cubes work like drawers. A note for the unwary, these fabric cubes were fabulous for a few years (7-8 years) until recently. The direct sunlight isn’t kind to them. They are Disintegrating. The fabric cubes not in direct sunlight are still perfect. 🤔

    Looks good, just a thought how about putting Kallax 1x4 or 2x4 mounted on the wall, either above sewing machine (down lights installed underneath the cabinet) and any dead wall space. You can also get pegboard from Ikea that are doors for the kallax range. I have a 4x4 kallax with a 2x4 kallax on top (secured to each other and the wall) which gives me more storage and reduces dead space that easily can get cluttered with " I'll just pop that there for now" bits and bobs." Have fun playing around with it.

    A suggestion for your cutting table top - if you get a large magnetic whiteboard you can put a cutting mat on top and use strong skittle magnets as pins. If your cutting mat does not fully cover the whiteboard you can use it as a whiteboard to write temporary notes. Some whiteboards have a soft pinnable surface on the back. I have a 90 x 180cm whiteboard which is relatively easy to move. Larger sizes such as 120 x 180cm are available, but they often have a magnetic surface on both sides to help with rigidity, but this makes them heavier and harder to move. Ideally your overlocker should be on a table a little lower than your sewing machine, because the working height on overlockers is higher. Could you for a small adjustable height desk in your sewing corner? If it was on wheels and winds up high enough you could use it as a temporary cutting table extension. I used two large Ikea Ivar cabinets on wheels as my cutting table base. Not as versatile as the cube cabinets, but when your sewing room is an upstairs bedroom line furniture helps to keep the weight down. Pine weighs a lot less than mdf. Large amounts of fabric and books can be heavy

      That's a really great suggestion for the table top Helen. I'll check that out. The cutting mat I'd like is 90 x 180 cm. Not sure yet if I'll have quite enough room though.
      I have an overlocker and a sewing machine that will need to go on a lower surface than my industrial, but I've allocated space for those🙂

    Hi Christine! Love the new room! I have a craft/sewing room that I made a ironing/cutting table for. I used 3 2x2 cubes, 2 back to back and one across the end, so a little smaller than yours. I had 3/4” boards cut for top and bottom. Both pieces have 1/4 rounds glued onto them. The bottom board holds the 3 2x2s in place snuggly, as does the top, but top board is oversized. This way, the top can be removed and the whole thing easily disassembled as it won’t fit through the door as is. Anyway, I thought you might like that idea for the top of yours.
    Also wanted to ask….I’ve purchased cotton labels from same company you use. Do you seal the short ends with fray check? I’ve only used a couple so far but noticed them unraveling.

      Hi Cathy, I originally planned on using the 3 2x2 cubes to make my island as well. I think I'll make the top removeable in case I need the room in the future. I don't fray check the labels as they've never come apart. Mine are the "Classic woven labels" I wonder if it may be worth contacting the supplier.🙂

    oooooo loving it Christine, could you give the measurements of the room? it would be good to get an idea of the space you started with. I have a tiny craft room and I'd love to have an island like that I'm looking to possibly move into one of the other rooms and do a swap so it would be good to know how much space I'd need in a room to accommodate :) I have to say I do struggle with the cluttered look that open everything gives but I understand it makes working in a room much easier all mine is also open with the exception of a draw unit in my desk and two ground cupboards.

      Donna, my room measures 3.60 mtrs (window wall) x 2.75 mtrs. opposite the window wall is the wardrobe nook which is 2.5mtrs long and 45cm deep. I totally agree with the cluttered look with open shelving, but this might actually help me to keep things tidier. Behind the closed doors in my other room, you have to hope nothing falls out each time I open them 🙂

    The only comment I would like to make but because I live in the U.K. this might not be relevant. Where you’ve got your sewing machines set up, you’d be working in your own light. Perhaps the might do better by the window for more natural light, but I know you’ve got ideas for changes there.

    • @ChristinesHomeAffairs
      @ChristinesHomeAffairs  2 роки тому

      Normally I'd like the light from the window Gerry, but it would mean my back was to the door. I have a fear of that. I'll be installing some overhead lights above the machines though 😀
