    The trick when dealing with Chinese rations is to squeeze the packaging like hell before you heat it up, and squeeze it like hell again after heating... This will help break down the shape make'em look a little bit better. During the 2008 earthquake I got a whole box of the old Type 06 rations, taste not bad initially but after a week eating those I was being driven to the brink of total mental breakdown.

    Chinese army don't eat just individual MREs. There are also squadron meal cases where all the condiments are, that's why you don't see condiments in single meal ration. And every company has its own specialized cooking squadron with mobile kitchen trailer or mobile kitchen truck. Ground troops even got kitchen wagon for railway transportation.

    Hi Gundog, I am a Chinese and I like your videos so much since they are really objective. Here are some of my personal perspectives which might help a bit with eastern culture.
    In China, people eat way less sugar/sweetener than westerners. Here's an interesting fact that Coke in China is less sweet than it in the US. This explains why the orange juice is so light. I'm pretty sure it taste bad lol. Trust me we have really tasty juice in China but the military tend to limit their expenses.
    The fried rice was made in the right way---a lot of rice and some small pieces of veggies and meats. But I supposed they could have extra proteins like a bag of beef jerky or something. MRE and Russian ration are way better in this part.
    Chinese soldiers normally don't eat too much snacks, so does Chinese people( compare with westerners). And in the PLA army, they take efficiency as the first rule which means the soldiers barely have time to eat snacks. This is why Chinese rations tend to have less snacks. Also, the portable kitchen and cooking corps are fundamental in PLA.
    Overall, I give this ration a 6/10. Trust me, fresh authentic Chinese food is wayyyyy tasty than these stuffs.....the ration is not really bad but it still has a long way to be improved.

    One advise in regards to these types of rations (aka the rice patties) before you heat them up, knead the pack a little, along both length and width. It helps with the after product. In their bid to make these rations small, they pack em really hard.
    Had one. With some basic condiments this is good food.

      +aserta In the field I would want it all one solid bit as it would be easier to eat and not have to dirty up any other kit. I keep getting asked to do a review of exactly how we really ate chow in the field. I think I just might now. Cheers!

Sometimes google translate will give you two completely different things if you scan the item twice. Not to mention the shiny plastic gives the camera fits. gundog4314 - some pusswah gundoggy wont let me like his show. WHY? Bit touchy about criticism? Little sissy about rejection? I know I am. STILL, I wanted to like it and you wouldn't let me. Good show bro. Break out the soy sauce or sweet chili garlic AND! Why no chopsticks?? Looks like practicality trumps culture in a realistic situation...? OR, just fuck these disposable soldiers, they don't need soy sauce or chopsticks. They will be dead and replaced with another disposable in no time and good riddance. Still, they give them heaters... and I don't think you said but is this a day's ration? 2 bland meals, mostly sticky rice.. NOT a single meal, and not 3 meals unless the pickles are lunch? Hmmm.

    Thanks for the look into a Chinese meal.
    When you grow up eating rice and veg everyday this meal would not be boring. A little meat is the treat.
    If you take items out of an MRE meant for teenagers (pop tart, cookie, pound cake, processed cheese, candy etc ) you would be left with a piece of processed meat - with or without pasta or such, a side of some sort and crackers. The rest is just empty calories, mostly white sugar products. The Canadian IMPs I have are not much different than MREs, perhaps for a slightly more adult palate.
    Give me three of those bags a day and I would be happy. I know a soldier burns calories in the field but there are good calories and crap(sugar) calories. We eat rice three days a week and we're not Chinese.
    They could use some soy sauce or pepper flakes though.
    Enjoyable vid all round.

    1,152 calories, that is good number for something like this. Because this stuff should provide a lot, since it is meant for activities and environments that cause you to burn up huge amount of energy. Though i would really like to see an MRE that is extremely well engineered, thus on par with fuel bars in that they provide everything you need and in a way that your body processes flawlessly. But with the added benefit of tasting like food and not a compressed brick of fat and nutrients and other things.

      +John J I really agree with you. I was really curious to see how this would stack up to Mountain House, Wise or Alpine Aire. I always prefer to do things myself than listening to others as we all have our own preconceived likes and dislikes. I could handle the bland with the large amount of meat. I saw a really interesting homemade food bar too I am looking to make, perhaps I'll share it with you all once I've tried it. Cheers John!

      If you make a good Fuel bar, then share it for the love of god. Doubt it will be as nutritional as the test stuff i've had, but good god i'd give up have the nutritional value for some flavor.
      Because lets face it for weight, convenience, and nutritional value. mre's will never beat out the bar. But when it comes flavor and something you can eat and possibly enjoy, mre will always win.

    The rice as a sticky mass could be more easily eaten with chop sticks.

    good job as always!

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  8 років тому +1

      +The Magnus The green one is a Type 09 where the contents are slightly different. The Type 9 is more like a US MRE with a main meal, side, fruit/vegetable and a dessert with a drink. The Type 13 is Two main meals, Fruit/Vegetable and a drink. Then you have the "dry ration" versions of each type. Confusing eh?

    • @joebryer
      @joebryer 8 років тому

      +gundog4314 ok now i get it.....i think, confusing is just the start right?

    • @Vostadues
      @Vostadues 8 років тому +2

      +The Magnus
      "Type 09" and "Type 13" are 2 different generation of ration. Type 09 means it was developed before 2009, then the full pack and menu was reviewed and receive approval by the logistic command at year 2009. And Type 13 is the generation after Type 09, and the new menu and package was approved by logistic command at year 2013, and are there to replace Type 09.
      And about the dry ration, it exist in almost all generation of Chinese MREs, it is the "Hardtack" of Chinese MRE, those were designed as the ration for special situation, it works well when soldiers don't really have time or space to enjoy a meal, and it's compact size also make it easier to carry then the full MRE packs...
      And when come to size... Type 13 actually have more solid content then Type 09, for it replace the dessert and side (both small items) with a full size main... So instand of 3 main, 3 small side and 3 dessert for 24 hours meal pack, Type 13 simple give you 6 main in total, that shall fill you up really good.
      The only downside is... Those desserts was pretty good, and I do think some people will miss it :P

    • @joebryer
      @joebryer 8 років тому

      thanks for the insight it clarified alot, tho typ 13 is more streamlined well.....and i thought and think the swedish ones get repetetive quick :P what we can call moral food is to day as important as the regular food its self so yes deserts will most sertanly be missed ;)

    • @Vostadues
      @Vostadues 8 років тому +2

      The Magnus
      One more funny info on how Chinese army test their dry ration AKA "Compressed Biscuit / Compressed Ration".
      They put 2 units of soldiers (around 20 men per unit) into test at the same time, 1 unit will be served with standard meal, but the other will only receive dry ration, then both team will have to carry out the very same training and heavy labor work. And the researcher will take in data as how soldiers react to those dry ration, the points are usually their opinion on flavor, how quick they feel tired about the dry ration, is the dry ration easy to consume, how much water it takes to support the soldiers with those dry ration, how well is their physical performance, any sign of malnutrition... etc. The test usually last around 1-2 weeks, then the report will be send to central logistic command for review...
      And I do think China might be the only nation that are still put so much effort into test their dry ration now day, most of other nations are almost all ditched the dry ration idea and hug on ether freeze-dry or self-heat MREs. But when you look at the fact that China also put those dry rations on their civilian market as long life emergency ration... Those dry ration might actually be part of their civil-defense system.

    i have noticed through your vids that the US MRE FRH is very lackluster even the commercial ones are better i'm sure a day spent doing what a soilder's gottta do the last thing you want is a lukewarm meal.

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  8 років тому

      +Bruce Miller There are a few tricks to make them better such as a pinch of salt added to the water to activate the FRH faster and a hotter reaction, putting entire thing in a foam or mylar bag...even the MRE bag works well or my personal favorite an insulated lunch bag like a kid uses for school. It's all a moot point though as soon as it's out of the heating element it's cool again within 5 minutes lol

    certainly don't give much in the way of sides, as for the foam pouches, cost and weight wouldn't be a problem, foams cheap and doesn't weigh a thing! it's just getting the idea into quartermaster's head to add it! going back to the spice vid for a second though, I thought you'd be a cayenne pepper guy but I didn't see it in your kit? ever try seasoned salt? from what you carry, it seems that most of it is in the salt.

    • @batlad
      @batlad 8 років тому

      The size of their army likely is the reason why it's so crappy.
      A country with a smaller army would be able to spend more per soldier on training, equipment and rations.
      Also, like most countries, this isn't their primary method of feeding their troops. Whenever possible, most countries will opt for fresh rations as the packaged, shelf stable rations are much more expensive.

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  8 років тому

      +Pan Pieczarka It's all relative. In many places this is a feast. I agree with you that Polish SRGs are some great rations but after eating them for 10 days in a row maybe one of these type of Chinese rations would seem so bad. The Type 13 Curry menu was real good. Cheers

    • @aserta
      @aserta 8 років тому

      +Pan Pieczarka That's exactly the problem. You're Polish they are Chinese. Different standards, different customs. Different tastes.
      I didn't even know how many wonderful variations of rice there were in this world and had considered rice to be one of the blandest food types ever made, close to hate whenever it was made traditionally. Then, some years ago (before all shit hit the fan in the region) i was in Tunis, Turkey, Egypt and had pretty much every kind of rice species known to man. It's one of my favorite dishes now.
      Again. Different region, different customs, different people. I'm not defending the ration, i'm defending the rationale. You should never put your blend of ideas before theirs, that's what leads to misunderstanding and in this case, being weirded out.
      Just my two cents on what is a common problem around the world.

    • @CheisYang
      @CheisYang 8 років тому

      You have many things sad right,but Im not judging it by my taste or preferences - Id say even more,Im more of a fan of German MREs than Polish . ITs just look at them - piece of unkown shape and colour,with couple of beef chunks ,mixed with rice and some vegetables... after a day of hard exercises on battlefield,not necessary a real war,just cooperation or normal day at field,you are hungry and have in many cases,low attitude.
      there are two things that will bring back soldiers morale ( i know it because I have back from army couple days ago,as senior serialt)
      - Dangerous of losing your life by enemy soldier
      - Good and tasty food,preparing with care and effort.
      Now,ask youreslf.
      After a whole day making stupid things which your officer force you to do, you sit for half an our and have a time just for you,to make yourself prepared for another part of your tasks/training
      You open your MRE and seeing this.
      Are you motivated and happy ?
      Are you humbled by what you're seeing an smelling ?
      this food may cointain enormous number of protein,carbon and other important elements for your body,but if its not tasty and not make you feel better...its not good MRE.
      Cheers

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  8 років тому +1

      I agree with you about the morale. Morale is a western concern, a happy soldier is productive soldier. In the east more particularly south east asia they really don't give a crap about your morale. You are there to do your duty period. No frills authorized. It's totally a cultural thing.

  • @VashtheStampede007

    Not enough protein. I like fried rice sometimes. But I use brown rice mix, and a lot of salmon (cut into pieces) to fry together with onion, carrots, eggs. They really need to add something like a lot of beef, or chicken breast.
    This ration won't even please most of the Chinese today. It might be ok 30 years ago... Now even most farmers eat better than that now. No city deweller will stand it at all. The Chinese military is cheap...

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  6 років тому

      I think the intent is to use it only when a field kitchen doesn't make sense. It is waaaay cheaper to use locally acquired proteins and greens when you have sacks of rice on hand.

    I think that you have to be careful when eating Chinese rations as you may not know what meat is actually in the ration as you might find dog flesh in the ration and this would send the message that it is alright to eat your pet which is so very wrong and would not be tolerated in the civilized countries.
