  • We can think of our rough endoplasmic reticulum as the primary protein folding and processing centre within the cell. It is also quite special in that it is continuous with the outer lipid layer of the phospholipid bilayer of the nucleus. In this video we will go into detail about the functions of the RER and its components.

    Attention the illustration below (1:47) seems to show that the tubule system of the rough endoplasmic reticulum is continous with the nucleoplasm as it flows into the nucleoplasm. The tubule system of the rough endoplasmic reticulum is continous with the so-called perinuclear space which is the space between the outer and inner layer of the nuclear envelope !!

    This was very helpful, I found out new things I didn't already know about the RER like how they only manufacture secretory proteins! Now a question. I thought the RER had something to do with lipids too?
