It’s so wonderful as a theatre person to see a movie musical which is given the care and passion it deserves. That’s what I want for every major movie musical going forward. Even the marketing campaign has been superb!
I see it doing really well in craft categories like Production design, costumes, hair and makeup, but I also think Ariana Grande will get nominated for Best Supporting Actress
Coy, Jonathan Bailey plays Fiyero! He's from Bridgerton as Viscount Anthony Bridgerton! Also, he'll be the male lead next summer in Jurassic World: Rebirth! Jonathan has an Oliver Award for a musical He was also nominated for an Emmy for his performance in Fellow Travelers. AND he did ballet as a young boy! He's phenomenal!
literally just finish saw this movie. to be honest i'm not really familiar with the wizard of oz lore and not really excited either to see this movie even the trailer didn't really got me, but i decided to go and see it. i left the theatre felt so happy, so full, i found myself having so much fun and cry a lot, literally every aspect of this movie was a perfection but ariana and cynthia give a performance of a lifetime they will steal your attention from the beginning to end. man what a fantastic film... please go see it in theatre trust me you'll have so much fun experience it in biggest screen possible.
Saw it last night and was blown away. As someone who’s seen the musical six times I was extremely pleased with how they translated it to the screen. It was visually stunning and the acting and performances were excellent. I loved it so much I’m seeing it again on Saturday. Oh, did you wear that green shirt I purpose? 😂
I had the honor of playing Glinda in my high school musical, so I am very very very excited about this movie! There are few movie reviewers I trust, and I knew you weren't a musical guy, so to hear that you enjoyed this makes me happy! Also, I love your cat.
The man you are thinking of is Jonathan Bailey and he’s in Bridgerton and Fellow Travelers! I was very pleased with his character and the fact that he was able to do his own flips. I’m really glad you enjoyed it!
You're wholesome in a refreshing way. Thanks for your thoughts. As a fan this really was just how you described it. I will say though, almost all the people saying they're surprised how much they like the movie...would be shocked how much they would like it live
Defying Gravity felt so earned. It’s such a defining moment in the story, that if it doesn’t work the story won’t feel paid off. But her performance throughout the film, earned the moment of that song
I've watched it yesterday (my country screened it earlier) & it was really good. The scenes where Elphaba first wore the pointy hat in front of everybody & the final one during the 'Defying Gravity' song got me so emotional.
So happy you liked it. As a musical theater nerd I'm trying get myself in the right headspace to not be nit picking through the entire movie since I know the soundtrack so well and have seen it live twice. But I have heard nothing but good things from reviewers I tend to agree with, including a theater critic, so im hopeful and excited. If you liked act 1 fiyero, can't wait for you to see what he does in act 2 (i cant think of it as part 1 and 2). I also know popular and defying gravity are the most known, since they are breaking it up im sad I won't get to see my favorites yet, For Good, No Good Deed, As Long As You're Mine which have alot of emotional weight to them. Also, love your cat!
Your Elle Woods comparison really resonated with me. Going to use that to describe Galinda to bring folks into Wicked. By the way, Fyero is played by Jonathon Bailey of Bridgerton fame. Hope that helps you 😊
Thank you for this review. I paused, rewound, and went to get my hubs to watch it. He is JUST LIKE YOU with musicals....although he got into GLEE which was weird. I want him to go back and see it with me, because I want to see it again after taking my daughters/daughter in law the other day. I'm talking him into the value Tuesday to make it more appealing. I think this helped. 😁 I also love the Elle Woods comparison. 😅
I saw the stage production. When I saw it on stage, it was a bit overwhelming. I enjoyed the movie a lot better. The close ups, where you could see emotions on the actors faces, made all the difference. Not to mention Cynthia voice was so moving, her defying gravity solo, gave me goose bumps!
My husband surprised me with tickets to a screening last night and it was Sensational! One of if not the best stage to screen musical adaptations. So excited to see part 2 in a year. In the meantime I eagerly await the release. The sets, and costumes alone are worth the trip to the cinema. It’s so good.
Both the book and the stage musical are super special to me. Seeing it on the big screen was such a magical experience. I can't wait to watch it again.
The reason I love wicked is because I always felt like it was a superhero origin story of sorts and felt like it would always translate well into a movie. I was so happy how they laid the character and emotional groundwork and built up to the spectacle finale also with the emotional pay off!
I saw it last night and enjoyed it! I was a huge fan of the soundtrack for many years, but never saw the Broadway musical. Glad to see you really enjoyed it!
I’m a HUGE ADMIRER of the original source material..Wicked The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. AN ABSOLUTE must read for you Coy!
Coy it was interesting to hear you say how stressed you were reviewing a movie you thought you might not like. I don’t know if most reviewers even think about how much their review could anger an audience. I know that in the past you have been pretty forthcoming and honest such as your Acolyte or early Agatha reviews. I wonder if you’re wary from reactions from those fan bases. Anyways I’m glad you liked it so that you don’t get targeted by the ire of the Wicked fandom. It really sucks how people can’t allow others to have an opinion without getting attacked these days. Appreciate you.
Watched it yesterday and I loved it, glad to hear you did too Coi I find myself looking into other lore in the world of Oz now like I do with other franchises You said you aren’t a musical guy, have you seen Tick Tick Boom, starring Andrew Garfield? I think that’s another film that gets music in musicals right
Very surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. Idina and Kristen still love them from the broadway show but Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande kills it in their rendition of Elphaba and Glinda🙌🏽🖤!! Both women area spectacular in their performances and singing!! Ariana stole every scene she was in. Although prefer Idina rendition of Defying Gravity more however amazing how they ended part 1! Can’t wait for part 2! Glad overall you enjoyed this musical Coy🖤…always appreciate your honesty whether I agree or disagree ❤️
Hi Coy, I liked everything you said about this movie! I especially agree how you likened the experience to going out to a play. One problem with musical theater is that the shows are not very accessible, so having our favorite musical in movie form is so special -- we get to see people like you react to our favorite stories. Wicked is obviously very highly regarded in the musical theater community, so tackling a movie adaptation is a very risky, daunting task. I think Wicked/MT fans will inevitably find something to critique, but it's out of love for the source material, which the movie rarely strays from. My favorite elements were the set design and the comedy -- Bowen Yang killed it! Anyways, if you're reading this and you haven't seen the movie yet, go watch it!!!!
As a fan of musicals and Wicked, I felt like things seemed most drawn out when the songs didn’t pace the way the Broadway version did. Defying Gravity was drawn out compared to the stage version, but it was really cinematic so I was really conflicted.
Step Up 2: The Streets getting it’s deserved acclaim .. definitely excited for this Film and to see Ariana on the Big Screen ✨ also proud to see Jon M. Chu kill it these past few years. 🍿
As a lifelong fan of wicked the musical, I was also super cautiously optimistic going into the theater last night… AND IT WAS EVERYTHING. I feel like we all collectively forgot it was a film at certain points, and applauded after some of the numbers. During Dancing Through Life, you could FEEL everyone in the audience holding their tears back, sniffling. The whole cast and crew just got this so right. Is it a perfect film? No; but it is definitely the right version of this incredible body of work, adapted for the silver screen.
I agree I just worry for part 2 because there is a lot of off screen development for characters, some moments need to be revised as well as the fact that the 2nd Act is considered weaker by musical fans it will be interesting to see how they approached it. I actually enjoy Act 2 more than Act 1 though I think there better songs and it story comes full circle in a way that is more satisfying than Act 1 even with its flaws. I am curious what new fans will think of Part 2 of the story.
This guy… Coy bro thanks for expressing what I’m thinking in such an articulate way. I can never find the words but you brother, you get it done. Hella eloquent!
im really looking forward to it. I know I will love it as much as I love the stage musical. What I am worried about is how it will be seen by "a certain segment of the population" who are not interested in subtext about "being different", "finding out your leaders are not what they appear to be", "adjusting to life with a disability" etc. I think some people will just see it as a political thing when it isnt.
Glad you enjoyed. It. Is in my wheelhouse so really looking fwd to seeing it on weekend. You should definitely do a video on your 25 films you have given 5 to. Interested to see your take on them. (And it is christmas almost haha)
I loved the movie; i remember seeing the broadway play in Chicago a long time ago as a kid. The only minor problem I had was I felt it mightve been 10-15min too long and I feel one scene towards the end had a weird color change; but I loved it over all. Im going to give it 4/5 as well. Im excited to see the 2nd movie next year.
This was one of my most anticipated movies because of my sister and I also love Ariana Grande. I found everything about this movie just so much fun. I don’t think there has been a movie that has come out this year that had me smiling the whole time like this one. One of my favorite movies of the year
I loved it. I thought it would be good, but not "that" good. I can't believe how good the acting is. I teared up many times, Cynthia and Ariana had GREAT chemistry.
I am super impressed by Ariana Grande in this film, she has somehow found her blend of acting/comedy, and with her great vocals - she's born to play Galinda/Glinda!
Spidey looks just like my girl Pichu! :) Also, I cannot WAIT to see this movie. I loved the book, and while I didn't originally enjoy the changes made for the musical, it ended up growing on me and I love it so much as its own thing. Super excited to see this version!
Oh my God, Coy, did you just say you don't know Viscount Bridgerton??!!! Jonathan Bailey is amazing. Loved him since Crashing. Amazing stage actor, amazing on the small screen, too. If you haven't seen Fellow Travelers with him and Matt Bomer, you should check it out when you have time. It's beautiful! I love Wicked, so I'm excited for this. This cast is ridiculous as far as talent. Can't wait to see it.💚🪄
This is the review I expected from you: one of pleasant surprise!! I felt that weird lighting somehow matched Maguire's writing style. I've loved Wicked for decades and I'm overjoyed. I've got a few Wicked-related vids on my channel and I'm doing a breakdown this week with 101 details from the film 💚 🩷
It's funny how Coy said the pacing only seemed off a few times when the run time of this movie, which is essentially just the first act of the play, is about the same length as the entire actual full length both acts of the play. That says that whatever they added from the book (that the play was based upon) to the play really didn't cause this to drag. That's tough to do.
I freaking love this musical, I've seen twice in London and listened to the soundtrack zillion times !! I'm very sceptical and nervous about this movie, it looks amazing but i don't know maybe i will !!! Coy you have a very cute kitty 💚
I jumped from my TV to my phone to say I clicked because of the Spidey thumbnail (clever thumbnail marketing) and it's a different thumbnail on my phone app. 😭
I love musicals. I’ve tried numerous times to listen to the wicked musical soundtrack. But could never get into it. But I watched the movie and loved it. I like some of the songs. Wow Coy, tou don't know Jonathan Bailey? People will tell you to watch Bridgerton but he's even better in the mini series Fellow Travelers and he just got cast in the next Jurassic World movie.
But I am a musical guy but are alot of them I hate when translated to film badly e.g. Jersey boys, cats, man of last mancha, dear evan hanson, phantom of the opera these adaptations sucked
so Wicked, not what I watch at all besides Sing movies, so different, bright, two characters are intense, friends maybe, Green Vs everyone else, I wanted to know more, what happened about the animals??. magic, knowledge. The sister in a wheelchair, the Prince, talking animals.
Is it just me or did everyone miss that the munchkins are basically white supremacist Nazis & The Wizard of Oz is now a completely different story. The wicked witch of the wests only crime is having different coloured skin & is only legitimised by the pretty white girl befriending for selfish reason. I came out after watching with my daughter thinking that was the most racist propaganda film since American history X without any redemption arc, think it will be viewed like Starship Troopers in the future when the penny drops
The cat cuddle of approval is the most important endorsement we could ask for.
He definitely makes all the decisions around here. So it’s a big endorsement
It’s so wonderful as a theatre person to see a movie musical which is given the care and passion it deserves. That’s what I want for every major movie musical going forward. Even the marketing campaign has been superb!
It’s really something special
Sounds like Academy award nominations
Wouldn’t be surprised tbh
would be crazy if they don't

Hes doing Shakespeare's "Richard II" on stage in London from February-May. He's a phenomenal actor.
@@MarthaDwyer Yes, he is but Coy is more of a film/tv guy so I was informing him of his film/tv credits and where he can watch him in other things.
Yes the viscount!!
Love him! He low-key always reminds me of Danny Mac, (another Brit, who is also great in musical theatre, and moreover is a great dancer!)
Listening to the soundtrack having not heard his singing voice...dudes got a voice as smooth as goddamn butter.

It’ll be GREAT!

yessss hope you dig it too!
Very intentional green shirt =) stoked your going for round 2!

Seeing it tonight in 3D, and your review makes me even more excited for it. Will also see it in IMAX on Saturday.

Oh Coy I love that you loved this movie almost as much as me. I feel like I have a chance now lol
Coy needs to sit down & watch only S2 of Bridgerton

@crystall.411 lol. I am one of those few. That's where the actual story happens.
Do you recommend i pay to watch it in theater?
Just saw it last night and it was amazing. Best musical i've seen maybe ever?
When it was first announced i was like eh, then saw the trailers more and more, said ok ill go see it and wow i loved it
This movie is amazing. From the first scene with Glenda I was hooked. I wanna see it again. I love it so much
I freaking love this musical, I've seen twice in London and listened to the soundtrack zillion times !!
I'm very sceptical and nervous about this movie, it looks amazing but i don't know maybe i will !!! Coy you have a very cute kitty 💚
Hope you check it out and hope you love it! And thanks! Spidey-Cat is the best
Spidey is engaging in some very orange behavior in this, I love him!
Coy's muscles just keep getting bigger and bigger wth 😳
I can’t wait to see Wicked beside being a big comic book movie fan I am also a big musicals movie fan as well
Very excited for this movie. Glad Spidey cat liked it. Our tastes are normally aligned.
I jumped from my TV to my phone to say I clicked because of the Spidey thumbnail (clever thumbnail marketing) and it's a different thumbnail on my phone app. 😭
He said "i did not expect to want to talk about this one" 😂

Can’t wait for this movie. 😁
favorite musical? Wickedddddddd
The reaction I’ve been waiting for! Did you get a cool Bucket Coy?
Haha I have SO many buckets! Alas I left without a bucket (I need to downsize as is)
@ understandable! The ones that are being sold at Regal are wicked cool though. I’ll get you one
Don't forget that the original Wizard of Oz was in black and white and was later redone in technicolor.
You know, we really should normalize breaking into song. I think the world would be a better place it we did. Haha.
I’m went to watch wicked on yesterday and now part 2 next year
Its gone be "Wicked & moana 2"........at the Top spots for the next 4-weeks, or more
Step Up 2: The Streets
Yes!
Coy, also give Battle of the Year a try.
Everywhere i go this movie blew someone away
You sound more excited about it than a B/B+ :)
Ya know, the original was a book. If you'd like to experience it without the music then that's there.
Fantastical musicals like rocketman , tick tick is when singing felt natural
But I am a musical guy but are alot of them I hate when translated to film badly e.g. Jersey boys, cats, man of last mancha, dear evan hanson, phantom of the opera these adaptations sucked
