    S3:E13 One of our latest cars to roll into The Barn! (listing link below). A 1986 Alfa Romeo GTV-6. A last year example for US production. With only 79K miles, this is a clean very original example.
    The GTV-6 is a Bertone Design by Giugiaro, also the designer of the original Sprint GT (also featured on this channel), the GTV-6 is the evolution of that original GT. The car is powered by a Giuseppe Busso design 2.5L V6 engine, that makes the most incredible sound!
    The market has seen values go up on these vehicles, but still today we consider them to be very reasonably priced at average under $20k.
    The driving experience is truly like no other car, with great performance and superb handling due to it's almost 50/50 weight distribution. That distribution is mostly achieved by it's transaxle design.

    Brilliant ! I've owned one for for 33 years. The car and have become one! A true GT, room for luggage(utilizing the back seat) and one select passenger., a monument to the angles of the eighties-- the list grows with the length of ownership

    I love the GTV! After watching this clip, I feel like buying a ticket to Miami just to test drive it! In the early 2000's, European Car Magazine did a GTV project of putting the 3.0 Verde motor in a 1986 GTV. Along with modifying the whole car. Phenomenal. Just thought I'd mention for all the Alfisti's like me.

    We used to own a 3.0 GTV & love to see test review of this, very clever, beautiful. From the way they cleverly lower the chair height down as you adjust for taller drivers ........... to the weight distribution that improves overall balance ........... to the extra torsion bars that radically improve handling......... to the clever instrument cluster that adds an extra measure of fun when you drop the passenger seat fully back & semi recline before you do a rocket take off .......... to the clever power distribution that gives class leading acceleration in top gear over 120 km / hr ....... to ....... the list goes on & on & on. ha-ha

    What a nice survivor!
    It's good that GTV6 are getting some interest as that will help finance better maintenance, rebuilds, and a few restorations.
    I've had mine for about 28 years now. No longer near stock. No longer an everyday driver. But, still a whole lot of fun!
    I've got Alfa Ricambi sway bars front and rear, same for the front torsion bars and rear springs. Bilstein shocks. An adjustable F/R brake bias valve as mine had too much rear bias for some reason (original fixed unit removed). GiroDisc brakes front and rear. I used to have a Milano Verde 3.0L in it but now I have a 24-Valve from a 164 with higher compression, GTA cams, and headers (of course). Mine is a 1982 that had the very short 1st & 2nd gear, followed by a big gap to 3rd and a 3.42 R&P. I liked the tall ring and pinion gear for what I call "supercruise" (to one's fun but distant curvy roads), but now have a Milano Verde transaxle with better 1st & 2nd gear ratios, 3.55 R&P, and a freshly shimmed LSD. I currently have a thin-shelled Recaro race seat as I'm quite tall, but it's a PITA to get in and out of. So I've purchased a tired used set of those later model factory made Recaro "look" seats with the mesh head rests. Will rebuild those with the driver's side modified so I can still fit in the car. What else? More tire and wheel with 16" OZ Volanos and 215/45-15 tires. Want to go to a very light weight 16" wheel set someday as less unsprung weight and reduced rolling inertia helps everywhere.
    What next? Well, the car is now 37 years old and the paint is well beyond tired. I've decided I'm not a "patina" kind of guy so the car will be stripped and painted the original color (that medium Italian red with what appears to be a tinge of orange in it). A new windshield and headliner. And something that it hasn't had for years; air conditioning!!! These cars get hot in the summer what with that laid back windshield and rear hatch glass.
    Anyone who wants to really get inspired by a GTV6 needs to watch Davide Cironi's GTV6 video. He does a great job imparting the passion that's generated in driving these cars on fun roads.
    Thanks for profiling the GTV6 Gaston!

    Nice video. I have such a car for 26 years already. And i have all spare parts triple. Thirst i had a bordeaux red one wich was too bad to restore. I put am2.8 Gleich engine n it. Very fast. Dismantled the car and soled the engine. Bought an other one in Germany. Silver, 1985. It was hid by a GTV6 from behind on an Alfa club tour, during my birthday....I was very angry. I also bought one for 400 Guilders (before the € come) for parts. Then i bought the one i have now. It is red but it will become factory black again. I miss driving such a car. I am Dutch but live in Belgium ( Battle of the Bulge area) now. Here i have more space to work on my cars.

    I drove one of these in the mid-80s with the owner riding shotgun. I took it up into the hills to my favorite roads. We were gone two hours. Beautiful, thrilling car. I remember gearing down to pass on a straight of two-lane rural blacktop. I was doing 100 mph before I let off the throttle. What a voice.

    I ran a 1981 Black GTV6 back in 1994/5 and loved it and my friend had a red GTV6 at the same time. We were in our early 20’s and people thought we were nuts to have these old rusty unreliable cars. It was all about the engine

  • @TR850
    @TR850 9 місяців тому

    Phenomenal! The main problem is that it is very difficult to get a clean rust free example. In countries using salt on the roads in winter you literally had holes in the bodies in a few years. My brother usually tells stories about cars at the dealership already showing first rust before they were even sold. Horrible. I love the styling and the sound, but would definitely put on more aggressive wheels.

  • @michaelisaacson9735
    @michaelisaacson9735 4 роки тому +3

    Wonderful car, I ran my '81 for five years. Handled like nothing else. Sounded like it was always in a race. Not close to 50/50 weight dist, it was 50/50. Correct slides with a light touch. Awesome. Add a shift kit to kill the factory play. Multi-piece Driveshaft always fragile, two-piece head gasket has to be updated to the one-piece, then all is good. Also, don't take it outside or it will rust. But why bother making a video of this fabulous car on dull-ass, straight Miami streets with equally dull commentary? Production values!!! Get excited!

      Yes, in "Octopussy". I love how Bond's eyes narrow as he glances at it knowingly (he's Bond; of course he knows what an Alfa Romeo GTV6 is) just after failing to coax its chatty female owner out of a phone booth, and just before he steals her car that she has left running right there. You can see the wheels turning in his head -- better to drive that Alfa to save the day in person than try and warn them over the phone from a dumb phone booth. The Busso sound track from inside the car is pretty realistic as he races to thwart the bad guy.

    I had a GTV-6 once. Once. Fun car. Odd looking. A hatchback but not really. I tossed the catalysts (pre-inspection days) and bolted on some aftermarket headers. That gave a raucous blaaaat sound from the exhaust. Handled really well (its an Alfa). Great 155-hp engine free revving. Parts would just fall off the car as you drove down the road. Head gaskets (recalled after I dumped the car) failed at 38K miles. Clutch gave out at 60K miles (and I dont abuse clutches).

    My Dad had the 2.0 Alfetta back in the 80s and he loved that thing ( me less so , cos I was in the back! ) I'd dearly love to own a GTV6 , but I think you guys ( and Clarkson ) might be pushing the price up a bit. Well as long as they all get owners that love them.

      Timing belt every 30k miles but easy to get to. 7 quart oil change every 3k. Main concern is driveshaft couplers can go bad every 50k miles and shaft needs to be balanced property which few can do. Other than that everything else holds up pretty well.

    In 1990, the choice for me was this 1986 Alfa Romeo GTV6 or a 1989 BMW 325I. I went for the BMW, but I think they were pretty close on performance with the GTV6 requiring more servicing, but Alfa definitely look much more aggressive and most likely feel a little sharper to drive as well.
