There was a husband a wife couple in the Mamas and the Papas. The guy on the guitar, John Phillips was married to the blonde girl, Michelle. They had a daughter, Chyna Phillips who along with Carnie and Wendy Wilson (daughters of Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys) were the singing group Wilson Phillips. They sang the hit song "Hold On" which was a chart topper in 1992. John and Michelle also had another daughter Mackenzie Phillips who was a successful actress starring in the TV sitcom One Day at a Time.
John Phillips, the one playing guitar, formed the group. Denny sometimes performs the solo vocals. Michelle and John were in a relationship after the group was formed. John has a daughter(Mackenzie Phillips) from a previous relationship. Mackenzie starred in the film "American Graffiti" with Ron Howard and Harrison Ford. She also costarred in the TV show "One Day at a Time" with actress Valerie Bertinelli (Valerie was married to rockstar Eddie Van Halen). Michelle Phillips also had some acting roles. She starred in the TV drama "Knots Landing" and "Spin City." Cass Elliot also had a successful solo singing career. Michelle is the only surviving member of The Mama's and The Papas.
Other hit songs by the Mamas and the Papas were "I Saw Her Again Last Night" a song about the brief affair between Denny Doherty and Michelle Phillips which caused friction among the group members as you could well imagine, "Twelve Thirty", "Dedicated to the One I Love" with Michelle Phillips on lead vocals, "Words of Love" and "Dream a Little Dream of Me" with Cass Elliot on lead vocals, "Creeque Alley" an autobiographical telling of their career in music, "Look Through My Window", and be sure to check out Cass's solo "Make Your Own Kind of Music". Michelle is the last surviving member of the group.
John Phillips and his daughter (from wife #1) both suffered from John & Michelle's adulterous ways. Mackenzie Phillips nabbed a spot on a tv sitcom for a couple of years, but drugs took her down, poor girl.
Sorry to say, it wasn't actually live, they lip synched to a studio recording, as was fairly common in the day. My favorite Mamas and Papas song is "Dedicated to the One I Love. Great power harmonies. John and Michelle were married (blond girl and guitar player). Check out Mama Cass's solo stuff, "Make Your Own Kind of Music" is a good one.
The Beesleys Music: The only thing "LIVE" here is (maybe, for all we know) the sound of the "Hollywood Palace" TV show audience clapping as their "lip synching" to their recording studio vocals and music faded away just as it does on their original studio recording / record, because IT IS the same original studio recording / record being played here. The guitar was NOT "live"(that electric guitar is not even PLUGGED IN) and ALL of the music heard is from the same recording studio version.
Michelle Phillips (blonde) and John Phillips (tall) were married, Denny Doherty and Cass Elliott were not, altho supposedly Cass was interested, and supposedly Michelle and Denny were involved at some point.
I love that music of the 60's because of the emphasis on vocals and more classic use of instruments . and for the themes which were much more focused on youth and love and was a kind of story telling ... great reaction
If you want a little more of the girls singing try "Dedicated to the One I Love". For a different type of song from them try "Creeque Alley". This was strictly a lip synced performance. It was pretty much a requirement back then. Michelle Phillips hated lip-synching so much that she famously ate a banana on stage while appearing on a TV show just to show the industry up.
They lyrics always made it sound like the songwriter woke up on Monday morning and the lady he spent the night with was still there, but by Monday evening, she had left and he was alone again. Don't know, but that's been my interpretation of the lyrics since the '60s. --Dan
The audio is the studio cut on both videos you have reacted to. The way we heard them on the radio. "Monday Monday" was followed with another hit entitled "I Saw Her Again", which contains one of the most famous recording errors in rock history.
You should check out Dedicated To the One I Love, Go Where You Gonna Go, and Dream A Little Dream of Me. John and Michelle's daughter Chynna is part of the trio Wilson Phillips who had hits with "Hold On" and "Release Me".
That harmony is The Mamas and The Papas SOUND - meaning when you hear a Mamas and The Papas song you can recognize it is them by their unique harmony sound... :) Yes, they are performing live on the very famous and popular variety show "The Ed Sullivan Show" that often made music groups and other acts like stand up comedians become famous overnight. Yes they are peforming live but they are lip synching because if it was live singing they would be singing into microphones with wire cords.I am glad that you are reacting to them!
Also depending on the act, the Ed Sullivan Show often used boom mics to capture performances on stage. For instance an opera singer was likely not going to be using a hand mic or have a mic stand in front of them
I'm not sure why Cass Elliot (Mama Cass) was not on the pic. She was with them, I think, when they broke up. She did solo work after the break up. She died in 1974. Weird fact: She died in the same bedroom of a London apartment that Keith Moon of The Who died in, they died 4 years apart and they were both 32 when they died.
Thanks for starting this music channel. My favorite couple who did music reactions have stopped. I miss young people reacting to the music of my generation.
@mariakelly2146 I love that one, as well. I remember seeing them at Winterland in 1973. Rick Wakeman was jaw-dropping. To hear him play the keyboard in person was unforgettable.
They harmonize so well. Others mentioned about the daughter in the group Wilson Phillips. They harmonize beautifully as well. If you have seen the movie, Bridesmaids, you will know the song "Hold On" by Wilson Phillips.
In my mind ABBA, the Swedish group, that also had 2 female and 2 male singers in their quartet-who appeared just over a decade later after the Mamas and Papas-were a take off from the Mamas and Papas with their brilliant harmony.
If you like "Sunshine Pop" (this genre like the M's&P's) you might want to give a listen to Spanky and Our Gang's Sunday Will Never Be The Same, or Will You Be Staying After Sunday by Peppermint Rainbow. PR's song is sorta a "prequel" to the Spanky song though released two years later. Both records feature a large-voiced woman on lead vocal.
So glad your playing The Mamas and the Papas music! I love their music. Would love to see you react to more and also of Cass Elliot when she went solo! A little history……John Phillips (guitar player) and Michelle Phillips (blonde) were married. Cass Elliot (heavy set) had a HUGE crush on Denny Doherty. Even though he loved Cass he didn’t have those same feelings for her because of her weight (which he admitted years later). Denny and Michelle ended up having an affair with each other and this really crushed Cass! This happened very early in their group and it caused a lot of turmoil. Not only that, Cass and John were always going at it and it’s been said that John hated the fact that Cass was the most popular one of the group. She eventually left and went solo. As far as the group, there harmonies were always spot on. Other songs you should listen to are “I Call Your Name”, “I saw you again Last Night”, “Sing for your supper” or “Words of Love”! The last two, Cass sings the lead and you can hear how powerful her voice is. As far as Cass singing solo….i would suggest “Dream a little dream of me” or “Make your own kind of music”!
Mozart once said "Silence is very important. The silence between the notes is as important as the notes themselves”. A very effective 4 beats of silence in the climax of the song here...background music here = "The Wrecking Crew" studio musicans of the west coast, Los Angeles area. Famous musicians with "no name." Hal Blaine was often the drummer on what seems like a million hit records, and often, the only girl musician, Carole Kaye, on bass and sometimes guitar. She was great jazz guitarist and bass player, often making up stuff to improve the song on bass. She's still around, retired.
You should react to LEAVIN' ON AN AIRPLANE with Mama Cass (one of the women in the Mamas and the Papas) and John Denver. It's a great song that showcases Mama Cass's voice so well.
This group was all over the radio when I was little. As a 3-4 year old kid I thought they sounded like the scooby-doo crew (Fred, Shaggy, Velma & Daphne) and I wondered why they never sang on the cartoons. Ah, childhood.
While I do love the music from this group, I REALLY dislike that lead singer John Phillips. He did not want Cass (the woman with the darker hair) to join the group because he felt she was too overweight! Seriously! I do agree that you should listen to Cass Elliott on her own. She had the best voice!
Nevertheless, virginiapudelko6280 is correct. John Phillips, who put the band together, was concerned about Cass Elliott's weight and appearance. This band was not a group of chums who sang together. This was a group of professional singers hired to be in a band. They did not get along offstage. They were together only from 1966 to 1968. But darn, they were good.
Back in the 50's & 60's we called Arias, movie & Show tunes, "classic". I cringe when I hear MY music labeled as "classic", but change does happen over time, so perception about things happens too.
Keeping the classic going. If you ever hear of The Partridge Family then you should know about the family group they were based on, The Cowsills. The tall blond Michell was a model and actress later and the man with the guitar were married. The other two weren't. In my opinion only, this performance sounds so like the original record that I kind of think it was done with lip syncing. Didn't see any microphones either or a shadow of one.
Very few People have reacted to Look through my window or Dancing Bear, Trip Stumble and fall, Gemini child They have really awesome songs but are very not known by People if you can react to them would be awesome
Actually, this performance, as were most music performances on TV at the time, was lip syncing. The bands of the day had to be good at miming to a pre-recorded music track. Sometimes only part of the track was played back and the musicians provided the remaing parts live, sometimes only vocals.
LIVE ?? Not really . No sign of the strings , his guitar wasn't even plugged in . 1966 ALL electric guitars ( and mics as with the Righteous Brothers ) were wired . They were miming .
Love Mma Cass. Please so Dream a Little Dream of Me. She is so good
Up
Was just going to say that. She has a wonderful voice
Sweetest voice in rock.
Yes, Mama Cass has a great voice and it is one that pierces through.....she has a special pitch and timbre.

The Association was another great group from the 60's
Their hit songs were: Along Comes Mary, Windy, Never My Love and Cherish
There's a nice duet with Mamma Cass and John Denver signing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" that's worth you reacting to.
Monday Monday, yet another fantastic 60s pop classic from an era full of fantastic pop classics 😍

James, there's a place in the video where the singer's face and your face are on the screen at the same time and you look just alike. 😀😀
Creeque Alley is fun song about their origins. If you enjoy harmonies, you'd also like the bands The Eagles or Crosby,Stills,Nash,&Young.
Eagles "Seven Bridges Road" is one of my favorites for harmonizing. Just gorgeous vocals.
I would not do the Eagles. Just about every channel that does gets a strike.
@ Oh no, that's not good then. Such a shame.
CSN&Y are among the best. One of the original”super groups”. Each member a star. Great songs too.
@@procopiusaugustus6231 Agreed.
