Spearfishing in Australia - Adventure Food

- Tim McDonald is one of the world’s best at the sport of spearfishing. Like other Australian spearfishermen, he free dives and uses his speargun to target fish while holding his breath without the help of any scuba diving gear. During his years of spearfishing, Tim has had run-ins with great white sharks, bull sharks, marlin, wahoo, whales, and more. This time, Tim is traveling from Brisbane to a remote island near Queensland in search of Spanish mackerel, known for its large size, pretty physique, and for its delicious meat. Tim and his friend Josh take us on their days-long adventure throughout a remote area of Australia to find and capture the elusive fish they crave. By the end, it’s time for them to eat sushi, sashimi, and grilled fish before heading back to Brisbane.

Most sharks are actually really chill. I was diving a few weeks back and a 12ft Mako was cruising through the water. It came up to me curiously, had a look at me, and then swam away. Sharks are friends not fiends! ... well for the most part lol

In Australia there are limits on the size of Spanish Mackerel that you can sell the flesh of. Over a certain size is deemed a health risk because they have the heavy metal pollution from the bottom dwellers that they've fed on.

He clearly stoned the fish, no need for the brain spike. He missed the fillets with that shot as you should aim to do with most species.

no crocs on that island, they wouldn't live there.

Tim's a more experienced diver. He has worked with Riffe, several dive shops and companies to create videos for them.

No, what you need a small boat float attached to the pipe that allows the pipe to sink but float. Inside the pipe, steel leaders with swivels so that different sized shot can be used, would be attached to swivels inside of the pipe.
Small holes to allow water in to make the pipe sink slowly would also be needed.
A 100 foot steel leader would then be attached to the pipe and connected to the spear fishermen's ankle so that the natural movement of the flipper moves the pipe making it rattle.
Make certain to have a ten pound breakaway clevice attached to ankle for quick break awY in case a fish takes it.
Also paint the pipe like a normal use to induce the fish. Also make the pipe jointed so that while the pipe sinks and the flipper is pulled, it looks like a fish in distress.
