A week ago I brought home a 14 month old dog from our shelter whom has lived there since he was a few mos old. He's timid with strangers, black, and has 2 different colored eyes, so people repeatedly passed over him. This is the guy who was at the local shelter the longest.
When they asked what I was looking for in a dog, I saw several contenders, then they brought him out last. I couldn't stop thinking about him that whole day. So, I went back to the shelter to walk him for a few days, first, and I could see his joy in being outside. I decided to foster first to make sure we are a match. It turns out he is smart, loyal, protective, and a total love bug!
In just one week in my home we bonded very quickly, and he has completely transformed! He was already so bonded with the staff, I know they hated to see him go, and they missed him terribly! I took him back yesterday to the shelter so the staff could see how happy he is, and they immediately saw the transformation. I was concerned the visit might be hard, but it was just the opposite. He was so happy to see them and kept checking over with me to see... "Is this ok, mom?"
Now my new BFF loves to ride in a car and going to the park... both new experiences. He has given my stagnant situation new purpose, new light, and so much joy...he rescued me, basically. Can't wait until we go camping!

I 100% get what you're saying about being skeptical of people who suddenly show an interest in a special needs dog that may have been overlooked for months at a shelter, once you post a video of the dog. It's my reaction to people who always comment things like "if only I lived closer" when there are plenty of wonderful dogs waiting in their local shelters for a home. They only difference is that they're not internet famous, which is unfortunately sometimes what people really want.

I live in the northeast there are not a lot of dogs in shelters unless you want a pit bull (wonderful dogs, but my home owners insurance won’t insure me if I had one). Rescues yes, because they ship them from the south where they don’t spay and neuter as much, up here. I am considering being a foster for a rescue so that they can help clear shelters down there.

Spot on, well expressed Adrienne👍👏♥️....so true, many just crave fame...then they should take selfies with Brodie or Teddy, your American celebrity dogs instead of watching these platforms. So many just write, write, on all sites, but they would never take a dog or help financially. I bet some do not even have a dog, not three like me, and donating to 10 charities, 2 abroad....and I do not have millions, I give it away from my pension. So yes, easy to say I wish I lived closer...I wish I lived closer myself, as I would volunteer to help even clean the wee with Bounty towel😂👍....but I live in Hungary now, but even if we moved back home to the UK, I would still not be close enough to help the Asher House, but I donated a few times from this far away small country, and not just bla bla blas...my actions speak for itself! I liked your observation...very true! 👏👍....donate and adopt if you can!!! Peace and Love to everybody who loves animals sincerely❤! Hugs Zelda ♥️🤍💚🇬🇧

Not all shelters are full. The shelter in my area is empty a lot. There are lots of people that adopt from shelters 2-3 hours away because we just don't have dogs in our local shelter.

I also think there are a lot of people who rarely go to dog shelters, so they haven't seen the special needs & all the other dogs. When they see them with Lee, and honestly want to adopt them, I don't think it's for social media attention. Maybe they feel a connection to the dog, or at least that's what I hope for. Sometimes, people aren't sure if they're ready to adopt until they see the one that steals their heart. Personally, when our Boxer, my Dude, passed, I was broken & didn't feel ready to bring another dog into my heart. Until I found Jack.. he needed to be rescued from abuse at only 5½ weeks. I couldn't walk away knowing he was in such bad shape. My sons and I took him home, I poured so much love & medical care into him he saved my heart. He's ½ Boxer & ½ Cane Corso & just turned 9yrs old, my BFF, my heart. ❣️ I guess I just wanted to add a positive reason why so many people want to adopt when they see a particular dog. ❣️

Wanted a dog. Went searching. Decided it had to be an older dog, that had been disappointed in life -- everyone wants a puppy. Could NOT have gotten a better family member. She was a rescue from an Amish barn puppy mill who'd made them money for 9 years. Arrived here completely freaked out by everything. Wasn't "potty" trained or leash trained. Scared at every moment. *Her reaction was to try to run away or hide. Today she is snoring away. She is so happy to meet anyone on walks. Hardly ever barks .. might've a few months ago. She feels safe and we love her.

Very well said! Totally agree! Our latest is a beautiful cat that was dumped in our neighborhood. She chose our backyard and would not leave. Took her to the Vet and they were able to read her microchip but could not find the owners. She was 8 years old at the time. She's very sweet and totally housebroken. I'm thinking her owner died and relatives did not want her. She's now 13 1/2 and is totally in charge. Before her, we adopted a border collie mix from CARE. He was 7 at the time. We were told CARE rescued him before the owner shot him. Arg!
Anyway, we had him for nearly 10 years. I still miss him and he passed in 2009. My oldest told me our dog lived for so long because he was loved.

As one who has volunteered for shelters/rescues in CA and here in MA, adopted and fostered many, I still say "if only I lived closer..." sometimes myself! For most of us, it's just an emotional, impulsive response.
As for why adopters don't go to the shelter themselves, quite simply, most shelters are overwhelmed and can't show pets living life outside like you can. Also, they don't have the online audience, outreach, and resources that AH does. Hopefully, though, it inspires them/us to visit or volunteer at local shelters instead.
With the disabled or special needs, I think it's better for them to stay at the sanctuary. Otherwise, the risks and the regret (the wondering how they are) for you are too great, and you've got enough stress already.
Good to hear you do adopt out through your rescue partners, though, because no matter how much space, staff, and resources you have there at AH, you're only one person! And I know all the animals need a bit of your time daily, and you need to give it to them, all of which can take up a lot of your emotional bandwith, so to speak, and energy, Lee.💕🐾☮️

I completely understand where you are coming from. I hate to see animals taken in and returned over and over again because they didn't 'conform' to the expectations of the person(s) who took them in. Animals are like humans, they have hopes of a good, loving home where they are completely accepted for who they are and some people just don't get that. I have family members who I love but I really wish they would trying to get a pet because they then ignore them and never talk to them. They think they did a really great thing in taking in this animal but they never try to show love to them. It's heartbreaking, they don't even talk to the animal! Then them blame the animal for being lazy and want to get rid of them. I have to tell them over and over again that animal is most likely depressed because there is no love in their lives and nothing to stimulate them. I, myself, am a cat person and I have had many, many cats over the years (yes I'm older, lol) and they play, get plenty of love, eat good food, and they will even tell me off when they are in a bad mood and that's okay, we all get that way. Anyway, I hope you never change your policy and continue doing what your doing because there is so many animals that need that kind of love in their lives.

CONSISTENCY is the best word!! So many people get a dog or puppy and it’s all cute and fun at the beginning, but then people get busy, lives change and the consistency in which some people care for their animals declines. Same with parenting children. CONSISTENCY is the key! 💕🙏🏼💕

I love all those sweet babies SO much. It helps me to watch your videos and forget about my own current health issues. When I see a dog or cat that is blind or paralyzed, being loved, cared for, and HAPPY, in an environment like the sanctuary, I'm temporarily able to forget about my own issues. Thank you once again, Lee. You are loved and appreciated 💜

So spot on on the, "oh I saw the video, we would love to give that dog a home". But some of those folks are the ones ended up back at shelters, rescues and unfortunately just abandoned. Thank you for the great video! I am so tired of seeing 700+ dogs killed daily and the calls for fosters and how many rescues are full. It should not take a video, go to the shelters if you truly want a dog and accept the responsibility; should not take a video! In addition, if you are not sure and want to test the water then go to a rescue and volunteer or do a trial run by fostering to adopt!

Perfectly explained! Even if you have to continue to talk about the cons of your sanctuary, you do it in such a natural, funny, entertaining, loving way. You really have to have a lot of love and patience for all of the animals that have special needs and I'm sure you keep the washers and dryers on rotate everyday. I can't imagine how many mops and cleaning products you go through. Seeing you outdoors with your pack makes it all worth it. God bless you all!

Thank you for showing these babies unconditional love and support. Being selective as to which dog gets adopted vs stays in the pack, you’re doing what you feel is best. To do what’s in THEIR best interest is 💯 love. I have always told my kids, there are no bad animals. It’s the humans that have poorly treated them and disappointed them. I enjoy watching your videos because they show how even just the littlest bit of love can have a great impact, physically and emotionally. Thank you❤️

Having been a foster for a boxer rescue, one thing I have noticed is that one hang up people have from taking dogs at shelters (and is very legitimate) is that they are often A. Skeptical of their ability to settle into a home with other pets, kids etc. B. They are often totally different animals once they leave the shelter, in the shelter they can often be stand offish, super energetic, over reactive, shut down and seem calmer than they naturally are etc. it’s why going through a rescue is a better option for most since they’ve been through assessments for health and suitability.
I’d say what you have Lee is the ability to “detox” animals from shelter life, offer them a place to find themselves and then “retire” to if they are not suitable in a standard home environment, or go to a home that has been properly vetted and a perfect fit for the dog you’ve learned through and through while letting them let down at the ranch.
I love what you do! If I ever decide to adopt another I will definitely consider heading down to OR to choose a pup that has been properly socialized and assessed to make sure we find one that will fit our lifestyle.
Also regarding the “internet famous” comments, while I’m sure that’s the case sometimes, my guess is that a lot of the people who see the special needs pups on your page just get a chance to see them thriving at your ranch and see that perhaps they CAN manage their issues, and maybe fall in love with their personality ❤️ I think sometimes we get a little jaded and people aren’t always in it for the fame.

I hear what you're saying Lee. Some dogs are better at the sanctuary and some need a quieter home outside the sanctuary. Some are difficult cases that wouldn't thrive outside your teams care. Some need expensive ongoing medical treatment that only you can provide. God Bless you all at Asher House 🙏 💖 💐

Your videos offer us a meet and greet into personalities of each dog. Often when people adopt, you get minutes with a dog in the stressful shelter and have to decide if you want them then and there as there are 2 other families behind you to see the same dog.
Or an awesome shelter by me who places 80-90% of Rescues in Great Foster homes will set up meet and greets...but if you wanted to see multiple dogs that is hard to coordinate and often (which is great, btw) someone is adopted before you can meet.
So your videos afford us a luxury to actually see more personality and temperaments - its a rarity not all of us get as much of at our lovely yet overcrowded and understaffed shelters.
I worked at a kennel and it becomes hard to try to see the good in people when we see so much bad. It's like being in a fishbowl...but we have to remember there ARE great people & families out there!
Oh, and many of us animal people are bad with people...that's why we surround ourselves with dogs, cats + ...lol

I agree and made a similar comment - what is needed is more people like Lee Asher who can feature dogs in videos and give potential adopters a better chance to make an informed decision when committing to take on a dog or cat. Not an easy job because you end up getting attached to the animals you rescue!

Good morning Lee, I see you are putting in a new horse arena, with 8 new stalls and I wanted to suggest that one be built as a birthing stalls for future needs. I have always dreamed of having my own farm, and this is one of the things I would have. Actually, any animal you rescue would feel secure using it, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, etc. And as you say, hope you're having a beautiful day 😊❤.

You are 100 % correct..we all go ahh at Little Bear..BUT how would we cope in a normal sized house with pee and poop everywhere?.. let alone the biting etc..you are making sensible decisions for the dog..not for people and that is the most important thing. Hooch..Moo..Callie are great leaders and you always will need those to stabilise the pack no matter how big or small it is..excellent explanation as always Lee. OMG you are making the best and right choice for each soul!! It is fascinating the intelligence of some dogs that are almost equal to you in leading the pack; and the dog that you would be nervous about adopting out after he/she had JUST found the place where they fit in. How heartbreaking that would be to experience that ourselves...just finally finding your tribe and then being sent away. Would be better not to know that joy had existed. Hard not to anthropomorphize the dogs.

My wife and I would take in any Doberman. It's the only breed we've raised as family members. We have Charlie and we took in Abby. Abby ended up injuring herself. And the previous owner didn't want the expense. My wife is a DVM. And one of her colleagues just completed Abby's 3rd surgery on the same rear left leg. Abby needed total knee replacement. I should note, my wife's colleague, is a orthopedist DVM. The other 2 surgeries, were to remove the hardware, once the repair was completed. Nevertheless, the expense was still up there per se. Meds, x-rays, blood work, etc.
We have 517 acres in central TN. Dogs have access to the backyard which is a bit over an acre, that's fully fenced in. If they go outside the fenced in area. Then they're will one of us.
