I too found the that picture book in my elementary school ! That book got me into the Civil War . Cotton was a great writer and really put images in my head.
Hearing them on George McClellan, I'm reminded of my own command in the field. Only success counts. If you win, you can attend to everything else. If not, nothing else matters. I will add that a commander asks the impossible of his men while loving them. They are not children, they are men, and we must treat them as such. At the same time, we must care for them in the same way we care for our children. They sense that, and they deliver.
Love’s me some Gary Gallagher!!! This made the Thanksgiving vacation of a lowly veterinarian and Civil War buff (thanks to my late pops and my favorite brother…)
I was skeptical about Prof Gallagher’s unfolding perspective as he lacked Southern roots.. but he is nearly perfect in his tone and truths..he respects the history of the South and North…and mourns all the terrible deaths of soldiers\citizens.
More priceless discussions for us captured by the topics of this war. Much gratitude to you both
I love Gary Gallagher… he is a national treasure.
Nicely done
Thanks for putting this interview up!
