- On Feb. 8, in a jarring answer to a question from the media, Russian President Vladimir Putin said allowing Ukraine to join NATO would increase the prospects of a Russia-NATO conflict that could turn nuclear.
Putin’s assertion, made in the context of a complicated hypothetical about an unlikely Ukrainian attempt to take Crimea back from Russia, came during a joint press conference with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron.
With over 100,000 Russian troops amassed at Ukraine’s border, the conference was originally called to discuss ways to de-escalate the situation.
However, about 45 minutes into the meeting, Putin made it clear there were some lines that could not be crossed without severe and possibly even nuclear consequences.

For many countries, not having an army could never be an option, unless you have either 1. have no enemies or 2. have allies who would be willing and capable of fighting your wars for you. In the case of states like the US, Russia, the UK, China etc. not having an army could never be an option for this reason. For a sovereign state to remain that way it must be able to anticipate and prepare to deflect for the worst actions of all other states around it, because no country truly knows all what its neighbors have in store or may be plotting, good or bad. This was a huge reason why the Cold War and nuclear arms race became what it was, because of the paranoia any successful leader must have to keep its country in power, no matter what that means for other countries. Add to the fact that each state's leaders will always seek to make their constituents more prosperous (e.g., the existence of the West's military industrial complex), and you can see that war and conflict are pretty much inevitable.

Ukraine should have just opted to stay neutral, them joining NATO is like Cuba letting the USSR set up missiles next to the US. Russia has a reason to be mad, Ukraine-Russia has a weak border and is walking distance from Moscow. 3/4 of Russia is very cold
Neutrality was only a temporary measure for such dependant country as Ukraine, ultimately they had to pick a side, the time has come, and Ukrainians much preffered EU and Nato to Russia.
And it is not a walking distance from Moscow by any meaures, though of course it is much more convinient to have an extra buffer state in that area than not.

It is not about who gets hit by a nuclear bomb/rocket, it is about how many of them will be used. The bombs will cool the atmosphere dramatically which will lead to worldwide crop failures and chaos will set in.

My father a former World War II B-17 Flying Fortress Pilot/Commander had constructed a underground nuclear bomb shelter with thick steel reinforced concrete and asbestos insulation. It had a air filtration system to protect against fallout contamination and to provide fresh air. We had dosimeters and other equipment for radiation metering. We had many jugs of water,radiation pills,oxygen cylinders,canned food and one of the first Sony 6 transistor pocket radios.
Those were scary times and fortunately World War III didn't take place. I don't want to see it happen today either. There are far more devastating thermonuclear weapons today than that in the year 1962. Please no war.
