I was taught this "listen at a low level technique" many years ago from an engineer and it works all the time.......great video Streaky. Good luck on reaching your SUB level!
I've learned this trick before and it helps a TON. I turn up when I'm focusing on fixing specific things. But if I ever find myself needing to readjust balance, I turn it back down and take it on from that perspective.
Finally, a mastering guy that understands football (and we're not talking about the American hand-ball played fake football here !!!!). You got my loyalty for life my friend :) BTW, great video and great tips!
Fantastic - something I was eventually intuitively drawn to as I started to understand the physics of a mix. When I started out, I used think I wanted that balance at all volumes.... boy oh boy was I wrong! You want certain elements to come forward with high volume - and drop off at low! Balance is taken too literally by some people. A mix that has all the elements with equal bias can sound pretty boring. Its all about lead elements catching the ear, and this requires a) a creative understanding of what stands forward in the mix and b) a bit of boldness in your dynamics.
Maybe its a nice idea to do a feedback video. People can send in their mixes and you skip through them and tell what can be better mix and/or master wise. I would love that :).
Maaaaan that it was!!! I've spent a week trying to make my song sound balanced and only now that I saw your video I was able to do it. Thanks very much dude :)
This is heavy stuff on a Friday but I think I get it: the ball moves forward= volume the ball moves to the sides= panning offside= limiting referee= DJ
Thanks for the good content! I build up a Homestudio the last years for my own Music but i feel i am more and more interessted in mastering. I always try to find beginner music to master and i dont want money for that. Its just fun for me to sweeten the songs and get them loud and hopefully send a song back that is ready for upload. I thought it is not possible for me to become maybe onetime a mastering engeneer but in one of your Videos you said it is the best to begin for hobby and make years of practise. Before you everyone told me you have to be a mixing engeneer for years to even think about mastering
You’re right!! It’s completely the same as football. Everyone in the pitch needs to be perfect and do a good job. So the striker can take all the glory 😂
All too often videos of this ilk are fluffy and pretentious garbage. Not this one. This is good. Very good. I've been mixing/producing music for over 25 years and your analogy gave me a fresh new perspective. Ta very much geezer.
Only one element of the mix can own the main focus at any given time, and (as was emphasized in a video I watched earlier) only one element in the mix can own the very lowest frequency range of the mix at any given time
Great tips once again..... Do you offer online courses? If not i really think you should.... Differant genres etc etc i personally would really like to see a future house (don diablo) style mix down... His tracks (in my opinion) sound amazing. Anyway i digres... Great video keep um coming 🔥🔥🔥🔥😀
brilliant analogy that applies to songwriting and production as well. it’s easy to get distracted or overwhelmed with a complex mix or arrangement, but ultimately it is about one thing front and center at a time.
Yeah great trick for balancing... I've heard about that trick a long time ago, seen the dB scale of loudness perception increase logarithmicaly it is a way to compress the sound naturaly to listen to it at very low level, so we keep a clearer apreciation of the ensemble of the sounds in a mix. But keep in mind that for EQ work take care to not be fooled by Fletcher-Munson curve and put the level back to 83-86 dB this trick is only for balancing.
Streaky, you interested in a mixing/production project I’m looking to get a few of my songs recorded and mixed. Few of the lads at sound on sound have expressed an interest but want consistency across the tracks. Give us a shout if so 👍
Streaky, you used a Epidemic track as example. They are really good at delivering separate stems. And they do it in a way that you only have to put a limiter on the stems and you have the same result as the full master. Maybe you could do a video about mastering stems?
Awesome as always Streaky! Was just stressing to myself the importance of limiting ear fatigue. You saying to REALLY turn down our monitors is such a phenomenal tip. Cheers!
Nice, not seen mixing presented in this manner but it makes sense, thanks. Some cool songs I've heard recently keep things interesting, supporting the vocal, but you forget the details of the backing, like you say. To notice you have to make a point of listening for what they're doing. Will deffo try this approach.
Streaky you're a legend. The John Motson of mixing/mastering. "synth line creeping up the left field, carves a space in the midfield, passes to the vocal, vocal receives the focus and runs with it. clear path for the vocals as they weave past the muddy patch of the field. beautiful agility shown by the vocals, passing another muddy patch by the 18 yard box. the vocals slowing the game right down picking a shot and ....gooooal!!!... the vocals really getting the taste of wembley in their nostrils with that one"
Love the streaky channel. He been I n the biz a long time and still maintains his passion. As far as mix engineer goes. What the heck is that. Music producers make hit records not engineers. 😂🤣😅😆
I thing this is not correct regarding focus in music ... The brain can hear max. four things (musical parts) at the same time in a song ... So for example one is lead vocal, the second rhythm section, (3) synth background, (4) backing vocals. But of course you can have a main element in a mix that you want to emphasize and that is 99% the case in pop music.
excellent analogy & advice! but that said (and i know it's down to copyright issues) the last thing i want to actually hear is yet another brilliantly mixed but otherwise terrible bland "song" - might as well have been mixed in a bucket for all the difference it makes. only really interested in what aspects of a mix make a truly great hit song a great hit song...
Great video amd I love the football parallel. A solid technique as well. I've been using this for 2 years or so. It works on both speakers and headphones.
Your Honor i object....the 1st goal in football is not to concede a goal, this way you can't loose. 2nd objective is to always shoot one more than your opponent, this way you'll always win ,sorry i used to be a defensive midfielder. But please continue : `)

Also, this tip can work well on laptop speakers to see what's sticking out (loud) in between the focal point (loud) what's not.
This channel is pure gold.
Loved the football analogy. It's a great way to put it, the whole track is a team working together to drive one focus point.
3950 Americans going...what..football..where is the egg..I don't get it? lmao...
Finally, a mastering guy that understands football (and we're not talking about the American hand-ball played fake football here !!!!). You got my loyalty for life my friend :) BTW, great video and great tips!
one of the best ever Streaky vods, because so useful ! i knew , but someone had to say it clearly. Thank you deeply !

👍🏿 Great explanation of how to apply balancing on a mix.
Cheers Streaky! 😀
Maaaaan that it was!!! I've spent a week trying to make my song sound balanced and only now that I saw your video I was able to do it. Thanks very much dude :)
Great tips.They are so revealing.
Brilliant video. 🙏
Love the way you teach! Cheers
Thank you for every tips!Streaky you are fantastic...
streaky you are brilliant.
Streaky, decent vid, as a big LFC fan this made some sense
You are the best short video (S) Awesome informations ,u are CHOSEN
Great mental visualization! Thank you 👌
Can't believe I'm only coming across this channel now. Ridiculously helpful content man! Big ups 🙏
Streaky is a legend!!
This is heavy stuff on a Friday but I think I get it:
the ball moves forward= volume
the ball moves to the sides= panning
offside= limiting
referee= DJ
harsh, disruptive frequencies you EQ'd out= Vinnie Jones who just got sent off for headbutting someone
A great analogy that I will pass forward to my students (see what I did there)!
This is the hardest part to focus personaly on the balance
You are a life saver❤
Great analogy
Brilliant

This is amazing advice!!
Good job, trainer!
You’re right!! It’s completely the same as football. Everyone in the pitch needs to be perfect and do a good job. So the striker can take all the glory 😂
Great analogy Streaky! Ted Rileys Centre back (snare) had aspirations of being a striker! 😆
Great stuff! Thanks 😊 🙏 😊
Honestly this one has been so helpful to me
Thanks 🙏
This is so good. Gracias
All too often videos of this ilk are fluffy and pretentious garbage. Not this one. This is good. Very good.
I've been mixing/producing music for over 25 years and your analogy gave me a fresh new perspective. Ta very much geezer.
Thank you for your job!
This was really helpful, I never looked at it like this.
Good shit
Thank you!
hello streaky!
awesome explanation
Only one element of the mix can own the main focus at any given time, and (as was emphasized in a video I watched earlier) only one element in the mix can own the very lowest frequency range of the mix at any given time
Much appreciated 🤙🏽💯
Keep doing these video, very very userful, Thanks ;)

See links below 👍
Amazing.... I do think i need to do a mixing course first? Like so many enginners say "you cant polish a turd"
So what you're saying is that Arsene Wenger was Gregg Wells, Thierry Henry was Bob Marley and Harry Kane has never won a trophy?
I’m assuming this was fir beginners because there’s nothing new about this technique. I was really looking for a new and cutting edge technique
Dang….
Thanks Streaky. This is great advice. Subscribe everyone!
Nonsense - I can focus on more than one thing at a time
"they are not listening to the drums, they are feeling it" Well said!
brilliant analogy that applies to songwriting and production as well. it’s easy to get distracted or overwhelmed with a complex mix or arrangement, but ultimately it is about one thing front and center at a time.
Wow, this by far the best mixing tip I‘ve heard in my whole life!!
Start from 5:00 looks like I'm watching David Attenborough moments BBC Earth .
That’s hilarious 😂
Streaky, you interested in a mixing/production project I’m looking to get a few of my songs recorded and mixed. Few of the lads at sound on sound have expressed an interest but want consistency across the tracks. Give us a shout if so 👍
When I finished my track, I put my shirt over my head.
Great advice. Cow bell is your substitute player, bring him on before the end.

@@Streaky_com 😉
bah pop is easy, if you wana demo how to direct focus use modern metal like Periphery and Erra.
Thanks ☺️
I love you more

Ok
Are you Louis van Gaal or a mix engineer? This was horrible
No I’m a mastering engineer
Awesome as always Streaky! Was just stressing to myself the importance of limiting ear fatigue. You saying to REALLY turn down our monitors is such a phenomenal tip. Cheers!
Lol @ "little keyboard thing" , you mean the marimbas :)
One mans marimbas is another mans...🤦♂️✌🏻😂
You're amazing. What a great idea to listen to it with low volume!

Can we get some mix automation tips Streaky? Love to see a video on that. How to give your track more energy and dimension with automation

Hahaha excellent

Interesting. Logical really. It's the convergence point of mixing and arranging.
Ohhhh!! So that’s how you play soccer. Thanks Streaky!
@streaky can you do a vid on how to achieve that vocal sound from Tyra Chantey? Been chasing that sound forever lol
Interesting but effective analogy. Thank you for sharing your insight.
Andrew Scheps calls this the “string of attention.”
Your football analogy's are fucking brilliant.
I thing this is not correct regarding focus in music ... The brain can hear max. four things (musical parts) at the same time in a song ... Looking forward to watching some football and remixing the game in my head!!

Love the football analogy .. thanks. Great video
Liked even before you asked this time! :)
Hello everyone..
Question!
Do you have mixing and mastering services?
i can’t stress how helpful this was.🙏🏽
Great video amd I love the football parallel. A solid technique as well. I've been using this for 2 years or so. It works on both speakers and headphones.
Tone is over looked.
James brown would disagree
Skip to 4:00 to bypass a football analogy and get to the reason you came here.
thank you
this is very effective
Dynamic eq with sidechain to focus the level of the focus track ? Pink noise reference tecnique for a balanced Raw mix ?
This is great info, thank you....
On your site you offer a mastering service. What about mixing?
Email us hello@streaky.com

You are Good Streak I wish you to tutor me live, I feal you and your lessons. GOOD WORK BLESS YOU.
Learned more here in 12 minutes than I have in 4 years of learning this fucking trade.
The audio engineer from the Metropolis studio (London) is back!👍
But wait. That's not football. That's soccer.
Thanks for tip! Will utilize this going forward!
thank you for sharing ur awesome knowledge
The English football team should hire Chris Lord Alge as their coach then ;)
@streaky - have you thought of doing an easy reference guide book - in the way that Rick Beato has done the Beato book? I would buy it!
This is a really nice mix.😎💯
