    FFXIV player here. I'm not gonna correct you on a bunch of date and inaccurate points you made in the middle but FFXIV is an MMO that takes into account player dips and takes that information and actually uses it for budgeting. SO FFXIV is actually very healthy. They take into account that players will eventually leave but make sure that each expansion is compelling enough to bring them back. One of the few online games that I know of that doesn't demand 100% of your time.

For the most part though you really did cover all your bases with your research and I'm actually really impressed. It's rare that we get this kind of in-depth content from someone outside of the XIV community, so thank you for taking care to get things right and representing the game, the community, and the dev team as well as you did.

    Bit of a nitpick here, but Persona 4 is not Shin Megami Tensei 4. Persona started as a spinoff series from mainline SMT and is now different enough that it's pretty much it's own thing. Keita Amemiya has nothing to do with the Persona series(Soejima does nearly all of the original art for the Persona series), he's actually more of an anime guy who did some special guest demon designs for Shin Megami Tensei 4.

    I don't know where you're getting your data, but the "changes" in heavensward weren't changes so much as additions, and were for the most part positively received in my experience. The raiding community was destroyed by Alexander 3 Savage due to super tight mechanics, and this is where heavensward suffered. Also Yoshi-p has stated that he doesn't want the game to be an all day every day grind fest, and wants people to take breaks between content updates to play other games. So the 300k "active" playerbase at the end of heavensward was an expected number.

    "Yoshi P wasn't a person experienced in a world of MMOs."
    That statement is false, Yoshi P is a very avid MMO player. And thus he has a lot of experience in it. He even stated that when he first played FFXIV 1.0 he could see how horrible it was compared to other mmos especially with it's UI design. It's also why he was able to take charge and bring FFXIV back up it's feet, because he was a fellow MMO player that understood the needs and wants of players.
    A more correct statement would be "Yoshi P wasn't a person experienced *leading* a world of MMOs."

      Alot of things are simply incorrect in this video.
      Active players on that website are actually the players who are up to date to the story. So that excludes lower level players.
      As well as the story of ARR not being connected to HW. What's up with that? Some bullshit happened in Uldah which made our character flee to Ishgard and that's where Heavensward essentially begins. Because our reputation got screwed back in Uldah, we had no choice but to continue our story in Ishgard.

    I watched this video when it launched. And as someone who met his gf in FF14, wich I am moving in with soon. And have been raiding and clearing content since SB launch, now raiding with my gf. I can confirm. The game is not perfect, but it has one of the best comunities and its growing so fast almost all servers have locked character creation and login ques around content patches. They even added two more servers to the EU side of things and still not a single server have had population decline only growth. That should say something.
    The latest story patch almost made me cry for one of the "villians", and I still get goosebumps hearing the new music for every boss they release. And I scream in joy with my raid team every time we kill a new boss. I am about 2 years into FF14 atm and the game is keeping me around and I get giggly as a kid every single time new content comes out. Not all of the content is perfect, and the game faulters here and there. But they listen to their comunity and is not afraid of trying to change the game or take risks with new content.
    FF14 is in my opinion the best classical tab target MMO on the market.(subjective opinion, and there are other MMO`s I would argue are better outside of the tab target cathegory). And as a hugely invested player I can only hope they keep it going. I cant freaking wait for the next raid tier to release, as much fun I am having clowning around gearing up my alternative jobs. Nothing beats progressing and killing a fresh raid tier with the love of my life and a gang of really nice and fun people!
    May the light be with you! And your adventures be full of glamorous loots! /salute

    This should definitely have a 5.X Shadowbringers update - Shadowbringers story has been of such high caliber, can be considered one of the best Final Fantasy stories produced.
    But 2.X and 3.X is connected and with 4.X and especially 5.X, they do bring in characters, locations, lore from previous expansions.
    In 3.X, they definitely lost players due to an overtuned raid scene, so a lot of players left but the game has evolved to a "Play, beat the content, unsub if you're bored, then come back in a couple of months" They fixed a lot of the way they approach Raid and Story and progression, while expansions are still locked behind Main Story Quest, they have streamlined the process in 5.3 to make the 2.X story quicker. They kinda bloated the original 2.X story since they werent 100% sure if they were going to succeed.

    Do a video about FFXI. I imported it in 2002 and learned Japanese to play it, and it remains the highest point in my history of playing video games, but not for the reason you might think.
    Every person claims that the community of their first MMO is unequivocally the greatest community in online games; but FFXI *actually is that game*. Japanese players are selfless to a level that American gamers cannot understand. I was helped for weeks on end by Japanese players, at no benefit to themselves, just so I could obtain a piece of my AF armor set. There were times where 17+ people would donate hour upon hour to help one of our linkshell mates kill a story HNM (think like a boss), to obtain something useful to them, or even just advance the story.
    I still, regularly, get facebook messages from linkshell mates I haven't played with in 5+ years. The bonds of FFXI's community just run that deep.

    Final Fantasy XIV is by far a game that deserves a lot of respect from Square Enix. They took responsibility and had the balls to say "We are rebooting. We are not changing names." That is a lot of balls to do that. As Final Fantasy XIV: Realm Reborn is a rather good game. The Graphics are wonderful and the Gameplay lives up to it.

Mind you I came in at 5.2 (or was it 5.25?) and I haven't stopped playing ever since. Final Fantasy XIV reignited a burning love for MMORPGs within me again, something that I had lost after playing Tera and DCUO

    this was a really good video!! i was thinking about getting a subscription, i feel like im getting in at exactly the right time. there was just that event in Vegas and earlier at TGS this year they got that nice update alongside the FFXV. Im looking for such a specific experience, fun to play good crafting. I feel like everything is taking itself too seriously either going in the generalized route and not really nailing anything. or going overly specific but not being able to nail down base mechanics. I just want good player housing lol i think a blend of FFXV and ESO will have to do, at least they have budgets and properties with lore im actually interested in vs all these other rehashed fantasy creatures

    I finally got around to watching this video. It's about 9 days until the launch of Stormblood, and when I think about all the times I've had with this game, I am without regret. FF14 might stumble here and there, but its hits outweigh its misses by far, and the dedication of Yoshi-p and his team is truly legendary.
    When Nerdslayer comes around to making Death of FF14, I hope that it shall be years from now and that it will be more of a fond farewell rather a postmortem of a disaster.

    The "soft cap" on the EXP gain is to combat the video game addiction - or at least so they could say they are trying to combat it - which is a big problem in Japan, China and Korea. It makes people play more often but for shorter periods.

    Small correction at 6:12: Character models for FFXIV don't have 1K~ polygons. That would be closer to what something like Quake 3 would give for a character. Somewhere in the ballpark of 10k-15k would be more likely, though I've not looked into FFXIV's development so I can't say anything specific.

      Maybe its because it sounds like he didn't even play the game with some of the stuff he said.
      The most blatant thing he mentioned was that raiders didn't like how easy content was in 3.0. It in fact was the opposite. Raiders did not like how DIFFICULT raiding became due to heavily unforgiving mechanics and dps checks. Many raid groups disbanded and unsubbed due to these problems.

      Hi There maybe I misunderstood but I thought he was saying that there was no middle ground between normals (being extremely easy, which they are) and Savage which is still pretty damn tough for the majority of the playerv base.

    • @Saiklohit
      @Saiklohit 7 років тому +5

      Trey Capps That was one thing he said, but he's misinformed of why raiders didn't like raiding in 3.0. He said that they didn't like the slow progression and dullness of the content when in fact, the "savage mode" raids in 3.0 and 3.2 were the hardest ever released. The easy accessibility of the "normal mode" raids caused an influx of casual and "midcore" players to attempt the hardcore "savage modes" of the raids. The slow realization of completely being unable to meet the requirements for DPS checks and mechanics proved too much for those players, causing their groups to disband and ultimately unsubscribe.
      Also, while there is that disparity of casual and hardcore raiding, there is also plenty of "midcore" content in the form of Extreme
      Trials.

    • @nerdSlayerstudioss
      @nerdSlayerstudioss  7 років тому +9

    As a player of Final Fantasy 14 I am very happy to see this video. I have played since the launch of ARR, but I was brought into the game by original(legacy) players. To address some of the problems of the game, I will say that some of the greatest problems is balancing ever expanding end game while making progress for new players in a story driven title possible. We saw the same growing in WoW, and it eventually is what led to cataclysm and their current model. As a player who reads Yoshida's live letters I know that one of the goals he's had for end game content is to try to make it challenging from a mechanical stand point and not a gear wall stand point. Efforts have been made to allow for multiple ways of upgrading gear to catch up with savage content, which is the hardest content meant for expert players, because early in Heavensward a more solid gear wall was implemented that prohibited raiding parties from progressing without dependency on random drops. As well, the effort has been to make the content for gearing up accessible to players so they are not locked behind gear walls either. The issue comes that trying to make the end game inclusive to more casual players while giving the challenge to hardcore players making constant three month updates means you may have to sacrifice the intermediate skill level. I love the current endgame, and am trying to build up skill and gear to tackle the more demanding raids such as the savage content. I love that I don't have to follow the old WoW flow chart to get the right pieces to do challenging raids. Would I like to see an intermediate stepping stone? Yes, but as peoples skill improve than the intermediate stepping stone will likely be considered just more casual by end game raiders.

    If you ever want to do another one of those I suggest to take a look at Titan Quest, which since its supposed death with the original THQ, got two smaller expansions (second one just released) and quite a few updates from THQ Nordic (one free big one when they got the rights for it back), which should probably also be a part of the video if you are going to make it. It's certainly one of the most unusual and best comebacks of an old video game I've seen but I feel not enough people actually talk about it.

    After Stormblood, FFXIV is now bigger than ever. People who say there's nothing to do beyond lvl 70 are not taking the time to explore the contents. Literally every contents in this game are their own games. Be crafting and gathering or Palace of the Dead, or treasure hunting or even simple side quests, once you step in there is no end. Yeah, progression is rather slow. For good or bad, this game implemented old MMORPG elements in modern form. It's a breath of fresh air in this day and age when paying for artificial progression is a form of gameplay.
