  • In this episode, Famagogo travels from Homer, Alaska, to Kodiak Island via the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System. Kodiak Island is known for having the largest brown bears in the world. The large males can grow to over 1500 lbs. On our first night on the island camping, we were attacked by one of these giant bears. It was a terrifying experience!
    We go on to have an amazing time fishing for Silver Salmon in the Saltry River, one of Kodiak’s legendary fishing spots, drawing fly fishermen from around the world. Kodiak Anglers got us there, and the fishing was some of the most amazing we have ever experienced.
    The next day, we watched wild Kodiak Brown Bears fishing off Old Woman’s Bay at Sargents Creek. We saw two sets of sows with two-year-old cubs. They were experts at fishing, and once they were stuffed on salmon, they played like kittens in the tall grass, wresting and rolling in their backs. It was a joy to watch and photograph.
    Kodiak Island is just one of the many stops we will make on our southbound journey as we travel the Pan American Highway from Prudhoe Bay south to the tip of Argentina in our 4x4 Sprinter van. This is the overland trip of a lifetime, and we are determined to soak it all in and explore this world to the best of our ability.

    AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING video! From start to finish this could have been a movie on Discovery. The fishing and Bear footage was so professional but those shots on the beach were my personal favorite. You both had such a magical experience and thanks for sharing with us 🔥🔥🔥

    I live in Kodiak. We don’t have grizzly bears. We have Kodiak Brown Bears. They don’t “attack” but they will scavenge for food. If you had residual trash, smell of trash, grill scraps, they will try to scavenge for that. We have not had an unprovoked bear attack in the city of Kodiak. Everyone who lives here is “bear aware” and it is taught at a very young age. Please don’t classify this as a “bear attack”, that is mislabeling our awesome bears that we cohabitate with peacefully.

      Thanks for the correction. Rookie move calling the Grizzlies. I did meet a man who was attacked in his front yard in Kodiak. It was big news at the time. I’m sure if you Google it you can read all about it.
      We did love our time in Kodiak and I hope this video reflects our love for this wonderful place. Thanks for watching!

    Great episode from the ferry to the bears. Amazed at how many salmon are trying to make their way up to spawn. Loved watching the bears frolic (happily from my comfy, warm & safe chair 😂). If you are so inclined, sew dental floss to repair your bag. It will last quite a while until you get a new one. Plain, of course! No mint to attract another bear ☺️

    you saw a Brown bear not a Grizzly . the Kodiak brown is much larger . My first trip to Kodiak was in 1985 and it was on the Tusty as well . A grand adventure from southern Oregon to Kodiak in a 1967 chevy pickup . Kodiak has been home for 39 years this July .

    Wait, your outdoor trash bag was destroyed and your second thought was to get another one. I've never understood the appeal of these things, yes it avoids potential odors inside, but it puts them outside, where the animals are, its just asking for trouble.
    Fantastic video though, I just found your channel and I'm thoroughly enjoying it, giving me lots of ideas for my own adventures.

    • @Famagogo

      I mostly use it for wet kayak gear or salty wetsuites that I don't want in the van. But sometimes trash to when appropriate. But I'll not use it on my next trip to Alaska.
      Thanks for watching and I'm glad it's helping with ideas.

    Did they clean the fish for you and were you able to freeze them since the freezer in the Revel so small? That would be quite a feast from what you caught.

    • @Famagogo
      @Famagogo  Рік тому +2

      We did clean and freeze the fish. But only about half of one fish would fit in the Revel freezer. We overnighted the rest to family for safe keeping... I hope there is still some left when we get there for Christmas.
