  • After my Ténarèze roundup ( • Exploring Armagnac-Tén... ) and my Bas-Armagnac roundup ( • Bas-Armagnac Roundup: ... ) a few months back, it turns out I still had a few more miscellaneous 'Yaks lying around the condo to review. Importantly, all of these were already seriously good value propositions - the Basque is, depending on exchange rates, well south of fifty bucks - before I even dropped money on them. But let's get to the scores and notes...
    - Marcel Trepout Armagnac 1991 (presumably 30 years old; 40% ABV), 84/100
    - Domaine "Le Basque" Bas-Armagnac 2001 (Cecile & Pierre Lamothe, Lannemaignan; bottled circa 2019; 46% ABV), 86/100
    - Domaine Tariquet "Pure Folle Blanche" 15 Year Old Cask Strength Bas-Armagnac (100% Folle Blanche; bottled circa 2020; 47.2% ABV), 87/100
The Trepout is clearly built to be a value buy for 30th anniversaries and such, and it serves that purpose pretty well: the 40% hurts, but it's still a lovely little example of an anti-Pibous, light-on-wood kind of style. The Tariquet 15 is terrific, perhaps only let down by the 8yo reviewed in my Bas-Armagnac roundup being just as good. Yet in many ways the standout (if not the winner) of this flight is actually the Basque. Y'all young'uns ever wondered what those really oaky American bourbons from like a decade ago - your Elijah Craig 18s and Noah's Mill 15s - used to taste like before the old bourbon stocks all dried up? Well, the Basque is your chance to find out...

Thanks for review. I just ordered domaine le basque 2001. I'd like to know about 2002 and 2003 vintage reviews too.

Thanks for commenting! Myself, I may hold off for the next vintages, the 2001 is quite a lot... :D

Completely agree on the basque its one i show bourbon heads who start branching out it does have just some “thing” that harkens back to pre today’s boom on top of boom bourbon world.

It's a hell of a lot of wood for the money, isn't it? Honestly probably more than I'm personally comfortable with, but some folks are into that! 😂

Finally got yourself the Tariquet (Taar-ee-kay) 15yr! My bottle had tons of black licorice on first open and has stayed a liquid gingerbread cookie. I enjoy it but it may be too balanced for its own good. Floral, fruity, spicy, oaky but no one item is exceptional. Still fantastic value though.
I had been eyeing the Basque vintages but sounds like they'll be too tannic for my preferences

I dunno, I feel like everyone needs a wood bomb or two lying around the house at any given time. (And this one's cheap!!)

I’m waiting for my first ever Armagnac (I’m mostly a whisky appreciator and some rum also, but very inexperienced with cognac and totally a stranger with Armagnac). It is a Le Basque from 2002 and 46%, for €38. Any ideas about this one?

If it's anything like the '01 here, it should be really good value - but be ready for an enormous hit of wood tannins. 😁

@@differentspirits4157 oh but I have no idea what to chose. I’m mostly a whisky guy and also not experienced with cognac (my favorite so far was Martell VS). This Armagnac I really can’t drink it, not sure what I’m going to do with it now.

Looks like you need to try the Tariquet 12yo now to see if it strikes a good balance between the 8 and the 15...
(assuming you don't have to overpay too much in the US, at German/Dutch prices it's a no-brainer)
