Great review! As a current Osmo Action and Insta360 One X owner, I am looking to swap up both for the 1" Mod and 360 module. I am curious what you mean by the Osmo Action having a few features the One does not?

Hi, great stuff! I’m not sure if you can help me.
3 questions on things I’ve read on Insta360 1 inch:
    1) max record time of 28-29mins. Does that improve if using an external battery pack?
    2) When using external battery packs, you need to press the ON/OFF every 10mins? Means, I can’t leave it alone to record a 2 hr footage?
    3) Are there any recording gaps when shooting longer videos? I.e. the cam saves the video into smaller blocks of 30mins and are there any gaps between those files?
Usage will mainly for my drumming footage for concerts.
    Considering this Vs GoPro 9

Unlike here in arid Southern Cal., you have enough rainfall to support much lusciousness in your lawns. I like the shot at 09:29. I wonder how the two neighbors agree upon the cutting of the grass, as I do not see any delineation that might suggest two separate gardeners. Was thinking of replacing my ancient Garmin Virb Ultra 30 with something more up to date, but with the Garmin refusing to die, and not being able to get anything for it if I sold it, kinda just waiting to see if the price on the 1 inch will drop. Thank you for the clip.

Well done video - I especially like that you provided low-light/night time video - that's important to me.
I'm concerned about two things - (1) videos are saved in a non-standard format and have to be converted to something shareable and
    (2) to swap batteries, you have to (a) unscrew off the lens cover (b) disconnect the cage (c) uncouple the used battery (d) re-align and recouple the fresh battery (e) reconnect the cage, and whew, (re-screw on the lens cover. How many photogenic moments will be lost switching batteries?

Whilst I agree with much of the video and comments, I have to interject sadly and state the the 1" version and 4K MOD are seriously flawed and that all that has ever been said is praise, now let's look at the parts that everyone missed. 1) the quality is terrible , not from the noise perspective or low light, but for fundamental basic image quality, and it remains to be seen why everyone is missing the obvious. IE stabilisation. Insta scored and jaded their mark in the 360 world an the 360 one X is my favourite 360. I has the LG early model that Ricoh based their design on, got rid as resolution was poor. Bought the Theta was good, but stitching and better blending of the two lenses was perfected by insta and the one X with a faultless Flowstare algorithm. Still use the insta one X a lot. I also bought the Garmin Virb, was also good, software almost as good but stitching was inferior. Why because the gap between lenses inevitably made its stitching less transparent than the one X. Not surprisingly the Garmin had to go. Now we have the ONE R making same mistake poor stitching and will never equal the one X, trust me. Now to the important points on the insta R. The company has no prior expertise in 2D imaging IE natural video filming, so getting Leica endorsement was crucial to the one R acceptance, but there is a flaw in the ointment. Insta took the lazy option and arrogantly used their Flowstate stabilisation on the 2D 4K and 1" clips........disaster...... The algorithm that worked on the insta one X, was perfect, but " unsuited " to the 2D image clips by both camera modules. I got my 1" model a few weeks ago, and daylight footage shot walking through the woods at 5.3K was utterly rubbish and unusable. I noticed that the camera could not cope with masses of detail as I walked past branches, weeds, shrubbery etc, so I Decided to film from a motionless stance, and again video footage was not acceptable professionally as there was pixel pulsing every second. This happened on three separate filming occasions. Camera was returned for a refund. The DJI Osmo action, and I have several blew the ONE R away, perfect 4K footage.. I com played to insta company, who saw nothing wrong withe the insv clips and gobsmacked me by saying there was nothing wrong with the camera or the filming examples I sent them. Their expert had viewed the clips. Unbelievable outcome. I have reordered the ONE R as I need it for stills and low noise and low light, Will do same tests again with Osmo alongside. But fir video the pulsing is compounded by the flawed Flowstate algorithm that thinks it's 360 footage and marked the pulsing more obvious as jerky blocky artefacts, so I cannot believe that insta as well as reviewers have such bad eyes not to see the issues that I have highlighted. Nothing against this posting as it's mainly truthful and informative but fails to show the quality issue I have described through lack of testing simple movement. I also noticed the greasy cal effect of banding on a blue sky, the dreaded test that cameras can fail on. I wasn't expecting that and it was not good enough given the hefty price of the ONE R. I have many cameras of various type including DSLR's and several BMPCC 4K and 6K models, so I know quality when I see it. In my defence to insta, "picture samples don't lie " guess I was wrong as their eyes do not see what is glaringly obvious that even my wife a non video person noticed after I pointed it out to her and there us the problem, all hype and poor understanding by insta to address in next FW. I am not a reviewer or have any affiliations with camera manufacturers but my knowledge of video is a lifetime one from early VHS to latest RAW cameras, my eyesight spots the motion artefacts around moving objects etc, but the biggest crime of all is the ludicrous implied suggestion that this is somehow a hi quality 200Mbps camera that can creat pro res output etc. WRONG !!!! This camera is a mere 100Mbps camera and the upscaling to Prores is an overblown ego trip to capture the Apple users who are into editing and why insta is committed to supporting Apple I stores with the insta ONE R sale. Android users are playing second fiddle to IOS users. I have complained and got a poor and lame response as an excuse that made no sense. We need a dedicated stabilisation option for 2D film clips separate to the Flowstate one that is 360 one but being used in an unflattering way on 2D clips. Come on insta.....get your act together..........or will publish the truth with examples of an inexperienced R&D department hopelessly naive as to standards expected, and need to learn fast what others have taken decades of expertise, like Sony and Panasonic as brand leaders in the video world. Even superb Canon co is a novice with video gear cameras. Sorry if this post is long and whinging but someone may find it helpful info , others may get upset. Am all for accountability by manufacturers to us users who pay their wages etc. Stay safe folks as what havoc the virus is causing ir ruining this industry too. So sad

Thank you for putting into words a lot of things I'm noticing as an inexperienced amateur just learning about these cameras, and watching reviews.
Even on this review, at 7:20 he's talking about "buttery-smooth slo-mo" and all I can see is noisy grass that would be unacceptable even in semi-professional videography.
10:50 hurts my head, as I can't figure out if it's just out-of-focus, or if the camera is making his face look smudgey.
I don't know if the terrible quality of video at 11:45 is because the camera is shaking on the dash, or what, but I'd throw that footage away.
Thanks for leaving a thoughtful, critical review.
      Good critics drive improvement.

@@myblacklab7 Dont despair, I have evolved a solution to my investment, that eliminates all above issues. So much so that I have now a second such camera. So INHO as a seasoned 40 years of being a cameraman ( not my age LOL ) I have had both cameras converted to DSLR status using MFT Mount. Ignored all internal aspect modes and FOV settings, and am using the full sensor landscape, but now with universal choice of lenses. My clips have stabilisation and my only criticism now is that of Insta360 company's idiotic and senseless approach to their app being Portrait mode only. So the preview window i useless and like a postage stamp, only using 20% of the phomes screen. It beggars belief that I cannot use the phones gyro to auto rotate to a landscape orientation to get proper view needed for focussing. This is a disaster and long overdue need to have the app GUI, changed and designed by PROS not some trainee app designer who knows nothing about cameras and filming. To give users what we want ie HDMI out is not possible without a complete redesign so ALL THE MORE REASON WHY THE APP NEEDS TO BE LANDCAPE PREVIEW AS WELL AS PORTRAIT. it is vital they rehash this as more important than any other gimmick features they keep wasting time concentration on. DO YOU HEAR ME INSTA ??????????? BTW I do the MODS for MFT Lens use as the LEICA lens is just a pieve of glass gimmich and PR LOO as LEICA engineered. What engineering ??????? its just a piece of glass insta lens protector LOL. You might fool some people like this reviewer or amateur enthusiasts some of the time, but NOT pro users. Come on insta stop patronising the market with BS and get your act together.

      @@xtra4u210 Could I ask a favor?
I have an iPhone 12 pro, but I want a camera that can shoot video in low light tolerably well.
Basically, I'm brand new to this, but I want to start filming things in a format that can potentially be brought to a media market.
So I'm thinking of recording everything 4k60fps, because I suck, and that resolution seems more forgiving for amateurs like me. On my phone 4k30fps sucks for any sort of motion, and 4k60fps is much smoother, so that's why 4k60fps seems like a good idea, but maybe I'm being dumb.
My budget is 550 but I could stretch it.
Should I just buy the 360 one inch and stop looking at mirrorless, DSLR, etc.? 4k60 fps at 4/3 or full-frame or whatever looks like it is at least $1,000 more than 550, and probably around $3,000.
So far, the 360 one-inch seems like my best choice, but I'd pay hundreds more for great 4k60fps in all lighting conditions, especially if it has 10-bit or higher HDR/DolbyVision, so it will match what I'm shooting on my iPhone 12 Pro.
I'm open to a camcorder or whatever, but I'm having trouble finding anything that's good in low light and shoots at 4k60fps - the 360 isn't even that great in low-light, but there doesn't seem anything that is better at that price point (or a few hundred above).
      Thanks!

@@myblacklab7 I think you will be hard pushed, to beat the insta360 ONE R with MFT Mod. That way you can use the fastest lens at 0.95 and its a large sensor and better at low light that an iphone IMHO as small pixels versus large pixels are a physical obstacle to achieving low light, so the fast lens is the route to go. The versatility of a DSLR style insta360 ONE R with MFT and Metabones and EF glass is the best long term solution to anyone on a budget and forget bulky DSLR mirrorless which are always going to be at a premiun. A rig using the Iphone and the Insta DSLR is light and practical. Where are you based ?

      @@xtra4u210 Thanks man!
      USA.
What I'd like is to be able to shoot 4k60fps in any light, just good enough that if I shared it and it was interesting content, serious people wouldn't be distracted by too-deficient visual and audio quality.
I know I can't compete with professionals in terms of overall quality, but I feel that if I could shoot passable video and record halfway-decent audio, then if my content is really good, I could draw some favorable attention from those whom I'd like to impress.
Maybe I'm being crazy, but it seems like if I get that goofy 360 one inch, tripods, lights, and external mics, I could record at 4k60fps, and with minimal editing I could produce content that would look and sound good on a 4K TV or Mac computer.
So basically I then get a couple of pretty ladies to read scripts of a bunch of stuff I've been working on for decades, maybe while they do gymnastics on the pyramids of Tikal, and voila! People may listen to that stuff.
I'm thinking I won't probably use my iPhone 12 Pro for anything much, but the 360 1 inch looks more promising for what I'd like to achieve in terms of image quality on a budget.
Is there any particular rig you might recommend? I know I'll need some sort of external mic(s) and lights for indoor recording. Lights are probably easy to judge, but I'm very unsure about what kind of mic(s) to get for interviews, on the one hand, and ambient sound, on the other (I do also enjoy thunderstorms, and iPhone mics definitely don't capture the bangs and rumbles of an incoming storm).
