TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY
A reading from the holy gospel according to mark. Glory to you o Lord.
Jesus summoned the twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick - no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them." So they went off and preached repentance. The twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
It's exciting to imagine that moment in the gospel. You know pretty much our earliest moment of evangelization. Jesus sending them two by two to preach repentance and to cure the sick. Basically, to talk to anybody who was willing to listen about this new Jesus guy. It makes us question can I be doing more in my life to evangelize? And that gets me to the baptismal promises I had you renew today. So, by the by, I am not the biggest fan of Jordan Peterson, but I like the guy. I listened to a few of his clips. I read at least one of his books. And the thing he has taught me the most accurately, I will love him forever for this one lesson if nothing else, and I'm not going to do this verbatim, I'm going to bungle his words, no disrespect intended, but he asked the question, what's the difference between religion and ideology? Because both of them are a system of beliefs, values, and opinions and paradigms that help you shape your behavior and understand the world around you. In that way religion and ideology are the exact same thing. So, what's the difference? He said: religion is when you have something beautiful within yourself which you have a desire to share. And ideology is when you seek to impose your order on another before you've mastered the chaos within. So in essence with ideology, you're trying to give something you don't have. But with religion you are sharing something beautiful. And as Christians, of course, that's Christ the holy spirit, the way to the father. And so, if you're sitting there at home thinking how am I supposed to evangelize, I'm home bound. Or I live in a very Christian area. Everyone here knows who Jesus is in the first place. How can I evangelize? If you can understand the evangelization as simply sharing the beauty of your faith, in my book that counts. Those baptismal promises, if you can share your rejection of sin, your love for the father, your covenant with Christ your savior and redeemer, your love for the holy spirit, your belief in the forgiveness of sins and life everlasting, any time you are able to share that with another you are an evangelist. You may not be wearing sandals, you might own a second shirt, but you are still living out that gospel. Because evangelization needs to be nothing more complicated than sharing the beauty of our faith.
