Overcoming fear truly is one of the greatest things about mountain biking. That intense feeling of accomplishment after you finally nailed that scary descent, jump, ridge, trail or whatever is one of the most satisfying feelings in the world. You can see your progression grow and know that (in most cases) it was the fear that held you back, not your what you tought lack of skills. Off course it's all easier said than done, but having mates that are a few leagues ahead of you REALLY helps a lot. In these last few weeks I've done some amazing downhill stuff that I always wanted to do but never had the guts for, but thanks to great help and confidence from friends and a great mindset I enjoy mountain biking now more than ever.
And yes off course there's always a chance of failing or crashing and hurting yourself, but that's also part of the progress. Just wear lots of protection and keep calm yet focused. Push your limits and have more fun than ever before. Peace.

I crashed hard on shale at Betteshanger, whacked my shoulder on a rock and travelled a long way without my bike. I got straight back up to do it again although I did it much slower than I wanted to as there was some fear of course, but next time I go I don't think I will be as scared as if I had just walked away.
    Nice video!

Great video!, from a psychology/Physiology point of view, you can also mention that fear triggers the production of a neurotransmitter called "cortisol" and "epinephrine(adrenaline), the positive side of this is that you get an accelerated heart rate, therefore, more blood and oxygen to your muscles, but the downside is that cortisol stiffens you up, and being stiff is not good for almost any sport. Basically, if you are stiff, you are more likely to both fail the technique for a jump/drop etc... and also getting injured. So being in the right mindset or as you said, being aware and taking advantage of this is key if you want to avoid crashes and injuries. thanks Tom:)

    A tip:
If you’re building jumps or learning a double or something just do it small or without the double. then make it bigger, and gradually keep doing that until you think of the first ever small evolution of that jump.
Then you will think that that evolution of that jump is tiny.

Gonna try and take this advice and hope it helps me, I’m having a mental block with a steep sharp left turn at local downhill track at the moment I just can’t ride it and it’s really frustrating, I think half of the reason is because I can’t see properly in my left eye so when I get to the corner I have to turn my head too much to the left to see where I’m heading but it’s driving me nuts because I’ve ridden way harder stuff. So frustrating! I’ve always had poor, blurred vision in my left eye but never got in the way of my life and hobbies before I started mountain biking, I notice it alot more now!

Just subscribed after catching you guesting in on Sp’s how to jump down at Danbury. A lot of common sense there. Any guidance on how to get used to the speed you need to come in to the kickier launches for an average rider, the sort which are 35-45 degree take offs but perhaps only 2-3 foot high? The landings often a couple of bike lengths away or a little road gap kind of thing.

Some of the BEST things you can do as a rider to be safe and overcome fear are:
    1.) ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET
    2.) WEAR KNEE PADS
    3.) WEAR ELBOW PADS
This is such a simple and highly effective way to avoid unnecessary injuries and give you peace of mind when you are riding.

I have a big fear to do a tuck no hander on a normal jump,I have done it on air-bag but I cant remove my fear from a normal dirt jump or a step-up.
