- In what has become my biggest production to date, I'm proud to release this epic hour long show!
Working alongside the Great Central Railway, they kindly invited me to capture a behind the scenes look at the Railway.
I Spent to day on the footplate of the BR Standard 5 '73156' under the watchful eye of Driver Martyn & fireman Anthony (also the owner of my local Model railway shop 'Tonys Trains' in Rugby)
1 Steam Engine, 10 Camera's, 2 Drones, shot over 4 days with over 85 man hours put into capturing the 33 hours of film taken, This is really one not to be missed!
Viewer digression advised:
All footage was filmed with full permission from the Railway or landowners where applicable. This film was filmed over a period of days and edited for this video, all views and expressions in the film are not necessarily representative of the Railway and produced for entertainment value only.

Fantastic job Richard and friends, some great footage and an excellent production.
Certainly a far cry from the usual guy on a platform trying to shoot over the crowd.
You've made my weekend fellas.
Thanks Gerry, I wanted to try and push the channel boundaries with this one. Lots learned and lots I'd do differently next time!
What an excellent production. Very professional giving a behind the scene on running a steam engine. Thank you. Alan
Your very welcome Alan!
Excellent, well produced and an excellent insight to the Great Central Railway.
Thanks Eric!
Absolutely fist class Richard. The GCR is reasonably close to where I live and I have visited it many times and watched it grow over the past thirty years. It was well put together from start to finish and what a great loco and crew to share the experience with. Thank you for sharing.
Cheers
Geoff
Your very welcome Geoff, thanks for the comment!
Loco Fireman from Australia here, What the crew was saying about preserving it all and passing it on is something we preach down here as well, these railways are our homes this our culture our livelihoods our families legacy, I pour my heart and soul into keeping my home depot alive and id damn well off myself if it went away.
The Production of this is very high quality as well, despite knowing almost everything the fireman was talking about it was still enjoyable and I didn't get bored at all.
Excellent. Well filmed, edited and produced. Thank you.
Excellent video, loved it when she came out of the steam. You will have to get the OO guage one for your heritage line now that you know what is involved
I'm on the look out!
Brilliant video watched on 60inch screen great quality could have been watching a Netflix film!
Thanks for all your time and effort.
Glad you enjoyed it Raymond!
Thanks for the the great ride (and wait) excellent editing and good choice in music.
Great insight to the goings on in the cab and on shed, fabulously done
Thanks Alex!
Hi Richard, what a sensational video. I was glued to the scene for the whole 1 hour, 4 minutes and 8 seconds. One of your best. Gotta love steam. Well done. Cheers Greg
Thanks Greg!
Brilliant. That was high end documentary quality... truly. The entire video looked stunning on my UHD TV... much like our trip to Germany videos... feels like one is standing right there. That's a lot of money invested in Go-Pros, drones, and more. Those men put in a hard day's work. Anyhow, bravo!
Thanks Anthony! Looking forward to doing a behind the scenes version
First class production giving a great insightinto the work on the footplateby both the driver and the fireman.Production was excellent with multiple shots from various angles etc. Many thanks for your team's work. Cheers
Thanks Murray
first time commenting, long time subscriber, what an absolute fantastic video, superbly done, well worthy of being a mainstream tv doc...well done to all involved ...
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment!
What a fantastic production....... many thanks
Wow, this video blew my mind away. Everything was so professionally in place, from the privileged position on the footplate, interesting conversation, background audio and technically brilliant filming. A very big well done and thank you to everyone involved in this production.

One of the best steam vids I've seen - actually better than a lot of pro efforts. Great stuff. Thanks!

Peter from birmingham
Thank you so much Peter, means a great deal!
Finally found the time to watch this wonderful film, really enjoyed it from start to finish.
Great work to show the goings on that take place up and down the country on all heritage railways, not just The Great Central.
A fine testament to the people who work hard keep our railway history alive, if only I had more time I’d love to spend my time covered in all that soot & oil!
I think your videos have moved on to a new level🎥🎞🎬
Cannot wait to see what’s next‼️
Cheers
John B
Thanks John, really pleased you enjoyed it! Much more to come!
What a wonderful video, it's a must-see for anyone who is into Trains, Steam or diesel, Model or Real it does not matter. I enjoyed every minute and every mile. A great piece of editing. Many thanks for making a really heavy rainy day into a joyful one. Martin (Thailand)
Thanks Martin, pleased you enjoyed it!
Richard, great insight on getting these marvelous locos running. Everyone thinks you plug them in and work!
Yep, a real of love and hard graft, tha is for commenting Nigel
Brilliant! What a wonderfully made video. I enjoyed this immensely. Well done! Well done!
Thank you Richard.
Thanks, really pleased you liked it!
the trailer looked amazing and gave us a teasing glimpse, but this was far and away more than I was expecting, top notch job thanks for sharing your experience with us.
Glad you enjoyed it! Was worried what you were going to say for a mo haha
What an awesome job by all of you. Within minutes I could have been watching a high production value documentary. OTHER HERITAGE RAILWAYS give these guys a shout so we can see your operation too. Brilliant. in the land of Union Pacific and BNSF it was great to see some steam running. Thank you
Thanks Paul
Only just got round to watching the whole film! Really interesting and beautifully put together! Brilliant!
Thanks Richard!
Well done and sure you took a real pleasure to be there and share it with us.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Great video for a Great Railway. Thanks for sharing your day so superbly.
Your welcome Piers, tha is for commenting!
Fantastic video, great to have such a detailed look at the operation of one of my favourite engines on my local railway.
Thanks Patrick
Well done Richard, loved every minute of this. A good indication of the hard work involved in running a heritage railway.
Thanks Mike!
Really enjoyed this Richard a true insight of a heritage railway shows you what you can do!!!
Exactly, thanks for the comment! 👍🏻
@@NewJunction no problem!!
brilliant
i enjoyed that immensely
an excellent piece of filming.
thank you for bring it to us
Thanks Paul!
Brilliant video, great images and commentary. Certainly the best production I've seen in a long while.
Thanks Ian!
someone likes my commentary! Blimey!
I've spent many years around the GCR sheds and on the railway. I'm looking forward to seeing trains running through that area once again. Hopefully they clean it up a little lol. Great video!
First class job fellas.
What a comfort that was to watch, Sound quality excellence, Well done that man,
Thanks Jan&Bob! Was a real pleasure to film too!
Superb video Richard, the best UA-cam video I have seen this year. I will show it to my grandsons on the big screen. Well done.
Thanks Philip, very kind of you to say so!
We had a wonderful meal on the train a few years ago accompanied by an excellent Shiraz. Highly recommended.
Excellent video. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done.
Thanks Tim!
Excellent video Richard, well produced and a nice pace. The conversation on the viaduct was particularly interesting. Lot of hard work being done by some very dedicated people. Must be thousands of hours a month the keep the railway running. Makes my restoration work look rather insignificant by comparison! I hope the work continues so the past may be preserved for the people of the future. Cheers
Thanks Richard, it's a scary balance of things coming together to keep these beasts alive, dedication, passion and a whole bunch of skill. Long may it continue.
What we need next is a diesel version ;-)
Absolutely fantastic Rich, Great camera work too, i will have to check the railway out and plan a trip myself the scenery looks amazing. Keep the great work up its showing :). Pete
Thanks Pete!
very good film well put to gather
That was some seriously pro videography my friend. Absolutely compelling and beautifully produced. Tim D
Thanks Tim, very kind of you to say!
Not at all buddy, simply superb work.
Merci Richard just had a wonderful time, my grand dad was conducting 141R in france.
Great stuff!
Great film and that was very interesting! Enjoyed every second of it.
Thanks
Richard just a great video mate especially the behind the scenes footage!
Thanks pal, I've got a small behind the scenes episode coming too.
This is brilliant super well made ! Thanks
Thanks Matthew!
Really enjoyed watching that, what a great video. Was good to meet you at the GCR show as well. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Gary, Hopfully see you again at a show soon! 😁
Absolutely brilliant.
Fantastic film fella.... Loved it..sets me and my son up for what to expect when we attend the Deisel Gala in two weeks...
Now that sounds like fun!
Happy memories, GCR was always a good place to enjoy steam. Hope that when I return you have made it over the MML 👊
(Cool production)
Great video Richard, I loved it went back and watched it a few more times to 😂😂
Good good, I've managed it a few times too haha
Very well put together video on my local line :) I used to volunteer at Leicester North many moons ago, Back before they had a building there! Even spent some time at Rothley Signal box during the summer holidays learning how it all worked and handing over tokens. This was back when it was single line all the way apart from between Quorn and Loughborough (Not sure if that was even complete at that time) Can't wait for them to join up with Nottingham GCR
It will be an epic railway once linked, you were proberbly there when I was, 15 years ago now.
that bit on the Viaduct... 'On The Viaduct'... there's a great podcast in that.
73156 my favourite engine simply wonderful
Fantastic great work guys. 👍👌
Cheers Gary
Great Video! As The fireman was saying, with the 25 MPH Section, if it was all fitted with AWS, most of the steam locos at GC have AWS Fitted, as being a volunteer I know.
Michael Portillo and Chris Tarrant have got some fair competition now for railway documentaries, that was excellent Richard. Great in depth look into what it is required in getting a steam locomotive out on the rails, really top quality there mate. Don’t know how you’re going to top that one but I’m sure that you’ll raise the bar a notch again. You and Dave from Dean Park Station could easily produce something together, his interviewing technique with Simon Kohler was first class and your eye for action and camera angles, marriage made in heaven! 👍🏻😀
Only a slight geographical issue for us getting in the way hehe
This is really first rate and a really professional piece of work. Simply spellbinding throughout. Mind I may be biased being involved with a heritage railway in Bo'ness in Scotland. Stephen
Hi Stephen, I spent three days at your place doing photo charters with 419 and 828 in November. Lovely railway. One of your fireman, Owen, appears in the background when we're doing the on shed interview
@@tonystrainsofrugby I've only been involved for a couple off years at Bo'ness and it is amazing what the volunteers have built there. Your comments about volunteers at heritage railways really resonated with me. I thought I recognised Owen as he slipped by. I went and checked afterwards and the Scotmid carrier bag confirmed it. Stephen
Thanks Stephen! Would love to do a similar project up your neck of the woods!
New Junction Richard we would be pleased to see you. I’ll drop you a message through Facebook with my contact details. Stephen
Wow, that was excellent.
Thanks James!
Excellent! The extended programme gave one time to appreciate the Great Central Railway and to settle down to a nice long trip. Will the 'extension' to Leicester North ever be doubled? That would be even more fantastic if it were. Most enjoyable, thanks.
Great video hope you had a great day
Thanks David, I did!
Fantastic
Thanks John!
Don't think I watched this fully when it was uploaded. But it's an absolutely excellent production.
For anyone on the GCR, what is the valve/device in the corner of the drivers pedestal next to the vacuum brake valve?
You should see the next Hornby Magazine show, I do the same thing but on the Ffestiniog:-D
I like the sound of that, looking forward to that.
Wonderful video :)
Thanks Simon!
MAGNIFIQUE, digne de grands réalisateurs sur les films de la vraie vie. Je suis envouté.
BEAUTIFUL, worthy of great directors on real life movies. I am bewitched.
BONA, digna de bonegaj reĝisoroj pri realvivaj filmoj. Mi estas sorĉita.
Thanks Nico

73069 was the number it ran as when i did my driver experience because it was around that time of that event too
Just based on the renumbering work as I carried that out on August 3rd, was your driver experience August 10th by any chance?
@@tonystrainsofrugby yes it was! i was with my uncle. Tony Measures.
I wish I could spam the like button and give 1000 likes because that was an amazing production! It’s always good to see behind the scenes on heritage railways and know how much work is done to preserve living history. Where would our heritage railways be without the brilliant work of all it’s volunteers?
Exactly! A day in history will come when we realise we ow these people a debt for preserving our heritage.
Thank you for the comment!
At Rugby until recently one could view where the GC connection was.
as a fireman my self i can only agree with the guys on the std 5 ..weve gota enjoy it while we still can
where do you fire? :)
statfold barn railway
@@mamodsteamreturns5492 we probably have a few mutual friends then! Obviously you'll know Martyn ;)
This is a great video. When you can, could you create a diesel one
I'll try 👍🏻
This is quality UA-cam. Much appreciated!
Thanks Philip!
Is boscastle nearly ready
The bottom end and the tender are done, boiler work is progressing slowly, sadly it's largely a lack of funds with 34039 that's delaying her return
@@tonystrainsofrugby it's the same with hartland at the nymr the bottom end and tender are done
You should be very proud of this. I wish TV was still this good. I imagine quite a bit of editing and work to make it so. One question - was it hot on the footplate ?
Thanks Ian & yes it was, the cabs are fairly open but the engine keeps you cozy.
I noticed, when the engine was running round, the points were set wrong 🤔 suprised it didnt derail or anything go wrong
They're ment to be like that. :-)
Late seventies my summer holiday job from studying at N staffs polytechnic, was as train driver, two foot gauge line, at Trentham gardens.
All the points were set to run all day without resetting, station run around and the run around at the other end of the lake.
The only reset was to put the engine back in the shed at night.
Dunrobin was an 060, Perkins 4.27 diesel steam outline loco, built by Bagnalls in Stafford, happy days
27:47 to many beans before the ride?
lol my beard on the microphone I think!
@@tonystrainsofrugby haha 😂
Pfffffrt!
@@NewJunction Hahaha 😅😂 love your content man
Rule 55!
Quite right or K3 as it is in the GCR rulebook, I had forgotten to name it in my 'commentary'! We were there for less than two minutes so there was no need to contact the 'box.
@@tonystrainsofrugby my fault for recording the commentary 11 days later.
Every schoolboys dream when I was a lad.
Still is for me lol
@@NewJunction I could see that. great Video, well done and a lucky chap.
yer know .....
apologies for my constant use of those words! Hope it didn't spoil your viewing of the film? I blame the editing.... you know.... ;)
What a fantastic video; thoroughly enjoyable but informative too. You should be very proud.
Thanks, it was great fun to do
