    If you live in the area where there is black soldiers fly there are simple DIY traps for getting your own larvae from food scraps and used coffee grounds.

    Hurts seeing this video, today. I took my chickens to my mother's house since her yard was larger. Was there for a few months with no issues then she calls me last night, after she got home, and told me that all 6 of my lil ladies had been killed. Looked like a cat got in there and killed them all. Love all your fur and feather babies.

    I do all 3 of those things BUT I haven't done the oyster shell or apple cider vinegar for a few weeks so thanks for the reminder. I was fermenting their feed, but changed to a new feed that contains prebiotics and probiotics so I've decided to take a break from fermenting. I enjoy your videos and content. 👍

      Ooh! I'll be curious how that new feed goes for you. What prebiotics and probiotics does it have in it? Thanks for being here!!

    Keep your bones from the kitchen and process them into soup stock and bone-meal. You can use the bone-meal you make into the same thing as the oyster. It's also useful for humans as a calcium supplement but it needs to be turned into a fine powder. Traditionally cut in with wheat flour portions in recipes to stretch the flour amount but it can also be added to smoothies to boost calcium intake. Oh and it also makes a great plant fertilizer additive.

    Our chickens will not eat their shells! I’ve tried crushing them up so tiny and they just won’t touch them. I am going to try using some of these ideas actually because one of ours has the feather issue and they don’t lay very frequently.

    • @FromScratchFarmstead
      @FromScratchFarmstead  2 місяці тому

      Interesting! Do you give them oyster shells? We always like the free choice so if they don't go for it, I assume that means they don't need it.

    I watched you mozerlla cheese. One question pls. Its safe just to hrat the water up tp 180 degrees Fahrenheit not more .hope tp hear frpm u

      @FromScratchFarmstead  8 місяців тому

      Hi! Yes, it should be completely safe to heat the water up to 180 degrees Fahrenheit for the hot water bath. I wouldn’t go above that as the cheese might melt too much. And at temps above 150 you’ll want to wear gloves to not burn your hands. Hope that helps! Happy cheesemaking!

    Thank you for this! I haven't seen feather issues, but we haven't had the larger number of eggs we had last year at this time. I thought maybe it was a little stress, because we are adding two pullets. However, because I have been letting them range freely, I stopped giving them their scratch mix, with black sunflower seeds, whatever dry worms are available, and oyster shell added. I just started giving them scratch again this week, so we'll see if it makes a difference. I haven't been adding the ACV to water every time either. I just need to keep doing the things I know work!
    In winter, I also give cottage cheese about once per week and lightly fermented feed about once per week. I also mix scratch with any meat drippings we aren't using ourselves.
