Good advice Tim. A bunch of people will argue that a modern O-ring chain doesn't need lubrication. I understand the principal of the o-rings holding in the lubrication. But I feel keeping it clean and lubed makes the chain and sprockets last longer. I have 24K miles on my Africa Twin and the sprockets look brand new. I clean and lube it about every 500 miles. Keep the content coming
That’s awesome you’re getting that much life out of your chain. I agree about the o rings and it’s still a good idea to do some cleaning and lubricating the chain.

Cleaning the bike on a long trip always seems like the hardest task even though it's one of the easiest. Definitly important though.

Don't forget to check tire pressure when you go to an area with much different elevation as well. If I'm headed into the mountains I like to stop after a few thousand feet of elevation gain and adjust it. Also, in addition to cleaning the bike up every so often, don't forget to clean yourself as well. On long trips one of the best feelings if you are out in the wilderness camping every day, is swinging by a truck stop and paying for a shower.
Also, carry spare bulbs. its often forgot, but if you lose a headlight or tail light and get stuck travelling in the dark, it can be very unsafe. there was a story from one of the Revzilla guys getting stuck 20 miles in on the road to the grand canyon at night with no tail light, and a police officer made him camp on the side of the road until the next morning and wouldn't let him go back to town. I had a headlight go out last year in the middle of a trek across Nevada and didn't have one, but luckily I was able to get somewhere to buy one before dark. don't want to be in that position again. Also switched my yellow fogs over to LED so that a drop in the dirt wont break the bulbs. had that happen before as well.
I have an 07 R12GS, went older on purpose since its oil cooled only. Know your bike and what parts you might need to carry. An example is that I now carry an extra alternator belt after one went bad in the middle of a trip on me, was squealing like crazy, and was struggling to keep the battery charged. I had to wait 2 days to get a replacement since nowhere had them in stock where I was.

another tip. If you know your bike has a history of a part crapping out carry a spare if you can.. The mfg of my bike put a crappy fuel pump in for a few model years. A riding friend has the same model he told me to buy an extra fuel pump glad i did. Broke down last year shop fixed my bike next day. On the road again very quickly. they did not have any stock They said it would have been a few days before they could get one. They said lucky i had one with me. When i got home bought another replacement just in case.

Nut or bolt keeps getting loose, try a spring washer or a few drops of lock-tight.

The last chain-driven bike I owned was a ‘91 FJ1200. The shop recommended Motul brand lube, used sparingly. Good results. Sold that bike after 5 years and have had shaft drives since including the GS. I agree with your points about keeping the bike clean. So important to get hands and eyes on these machines regularly. Perfect time to find the little stuff like loose hardware before it grows into a problem.
I miss my shaft drive, chain maintenance isn't too bad but nothing compares to the smoothness of a shaft drive. Well said about keeping the bike clean, good time to find loose hardware.

Just wanted to add this: Metal valve stems! Rubbers ones can crack when they get old. And of course, it will be in the middle of nowhere. Don't ask me how I know.

It's the Dynaplug air compressor. it's not on Amazon any more unfortunately. You might still be able to find it somewhere else though,.

Agreed, go over the bike and check everything. Fix before you leave. If you fix what you know is marginal before the trip and you break down, well that just sucks.. don't fix it and break down on your trip well that just shows intelligence

These are absolutely spot on tips! Maintenance is super important for the longevity of your bike. The tire pressure check should be done each day before you ride. Elevation can also change your tires pressure. Great video Tim!
