- The Israeli civilian mask the Shalon 4a1 gets reviewed for its use in a survival scenario, would it be good enough for a prepper.
In this video, we look at the popular Israeli Civilian gas mask, made in many variants, the one in this video being the 4a1.
The Israeli civilian masks are primarily made by Shalon rubber company and either have rubber or fabric straps, a normal exhale valve or a voice diaphragm and the option of versions with or without a drinking tube, there are some industry variants with a panoramic lens rather than the normal two eye pieces.
The mask also has the ability to take both NATO STANAG filters and Soviet/Russian GOST filters, meaning it is very easy to get replacement filters for the mask, the Israeli 40mm filters are also of very good quality if you get some bundled with the mask.
The mask works with most military helmets for head protection as well as being able to clearly see rifle sights for aiming.
Overall the Shalon 4a1 is a good mask with an affordable price.

I only have various infantry helmets, no actual ballistic Spetsnaz style helmets.

When I bought it, the mask came with a 40mm NATO Type 80 filter which was dated for 1995, is it safe?
Yes, it should be, as long as the filter isn't leaking.

@@Weaponsandstuff93 I have another question. I was hoping to catch you on Mike's stream, but doesn't look like he's coming on. Are you familiar with MOPP (mission oriented protective posture) gear? In the US military, our Hood for the gas mask is made of a rubberized material, similar to our wet weather gear, while our MOPP suit is charcoal filled cotton-like material. I understand the charcoal concept of it absorbing the chemical, but if the hood is protection enough, why shouldn't a rubberized suit do the same? It would seem easier to disinfect also, compared to having to change MOPP suits and discarding the old. During military training, we would always go through a sanitizing routine, passing through multiple stations. One of the stations was simply walking through a "chemical shower" that was the only step for cleansing the hood. Your thoughts?

Cool Vid. I have an older 1969 shalom M4 (without the drinking straw) and it's an easy, comfortable mask to don. I think they were made under licence from drager (based on the drager standard) good quality. Enjoying the videos, keep em coming!
It's called the Simplex, and yes they were originally imported Drager masks and then later bought a license and Israel made their own versions, Drager never made anything close the the numbers Shalon makes.

Got mine Sunday and I love it. even though its cheap it dosen't feel or look cheap. I would trust my life with it. love the design double seals and it is one size fits all. I'm a big headed person it fits me well. I even put the mask on my 8 yr old brother who's just a little bigger than a five year old and it fits perfectly on him with an air tight seal. I got mine for 40$ brand new mask,2 in date brand new filters (with plugs) and the drinking tube 😎free shipping with prime. what are you waiting for cuz the Russians arnt

well, just wanted to check how the filter is built since I have one (government issue, but never reclaimed due to Syria being the last one to be unarmed from NBC weapons in the region). so, in my opinion, it's a good mask, you can breath well in it, and there is no carbon dioxide getting trapped in the mask what so ever. the eye lenses never get clouded (as long as the mouth fits, but the mouth piece is rubber, so unless you are a kid, and if you are, get the kid version). during this covid-19 I once went with it, since I was just getting sick from the lame paper masks that traps carbon dioxide inside (got some comments, but some people actually said that I was better off due to the annoying CO2 getting trapped), but all in all, great mask, the only thing is that you should train yourself with it, breathing properly and the weight on your head.
btw, yes, I know it was an overkill going out with this, but I couldn't stand the paper mask anymore, please do not lecture me.

I bought the 1969 produced one recently, it had a little dirt on the inside so I just soaked and washed it, I was wondering if there was a way to remove the covering inside that goes over the voice diaphragm though as I’d like to check for dirt or talcum remaining in there before use

I bought 2 × Drager (simplex) units plus 2 × sealed filters aeons ago.
i have one,but i dont know the size of filter do i need for it,is it 40mm or 60 mm or something else?

As long as it's not a really old 68 filter yes. 80s onwards should be fine.
Out of interest do you have the much rarer Drager Simplex?
I just got my 4a1 and it’s a size 3 and rather small on me but fits my 18 year old daughter good. What size did you say yours is? I believe it was on another video you discussed the bigger the number the smaller the mask, I might be wrong though. Can you explain the sizes for the 4a1 masks? Great videos, I’m learning quite a bit.
4a1 masks are a universal one size fits all mask.

TF-1 is good, cheap gas mask. You could buy tons of them cheaply.
Is there any way to date the filters? Theres no documentation on the codes stamped on top
If you had to pick one, would you suggest the default filter the 4a1's usually come with, or the polish fp5? And since the polish fp5 worked on the m15 will it work for the 4a1?
FP-5 filters are handy because they fit almost any 40mm masks including the Israeli masks but Israeli filters are very good as well, just get what has the longest date and the cheapest price.
Are there any glasses/spectacle inserts for this mask?

What would be the fastest way to find out what a 40mm fiter is for example i recently bought a filter for my polish mc-1 and spent an hour trying to figure out what filter it was so i could know if it would be safe

I just got this mask and have realized that I can smell stuff slightly (tested it by using an air freshener spray) when the filter is attached. Is this normal or is the mask dead on arrival? Also is air supposed to come out of the voice diaphragm portion? Thanks for the help man, if you have any suggestions on How to fix this I would love the help!
Most likely your filter is wearing out, try a new filter on it and see if the problem persists. Air shouldn't come from the voice diaphragm but it's right next to the exhale valve on this mask so it's hard to tell for certain.

Hey! I just got one but it seems small. I got it on ebay from a reputable seller but im worried its actually a youth model. The oral nasal cup doesnt make a seal what so ever and its really tight on my chin. Any advice on figuring out what model it is?

Hey again! I forgot to mention it in the last comment and now I can't find it :P
So what I wanted to ask is what does the MUA mask come with? My bag has a pocket for the hose,mask,filter and a tiny pocket between the mask and filter and it has a pocket on the outside. Do you know what is supposed to be in the two pockets?
Also is the polish filter you use a "P 21/1-W" it is what I found on the maskpol site that looks like a newer GOST filter
I have the ABEK style one.
My MUA was just the mask, my OM14 kit contained the mask, pipe, filter and I think an anti-dim kit.

How do you know when was the date of production of the mask and where to find them.. Also weird my Shalon 4A1 didnt came in with a neckstrap
Inside the mask there is a date stamp, normally a moulded date on the rubber straps as well.
is it located at the left hand side?
It might be, depends where they stamped it.
if its a circular stamp as in like white ink it shows two numbers 97 and 86

Reconsider getting that variant specifically. I bought that mask + their filter and it’s made of a different (not necessarily better) rubber than the one in the video. Unfortunately mine arrived with quality control issues and doesn’t seal.
