Remember watching live at the time ,15 years old (a great time for 500 GP's) Always remember it for Croz bringing Bazza down at Stowe, and the King getting beaten by Jack Middleburg on his privateer bike. That was a very rare sight for Kenny Roberts fans. Bring back 500 two strokes for me any time!
Had his fair share of luck in this race, but Jack took advantage of Roberts & Mamola fannying about, then when Mamola went onto 2 cylinders or whatever, he ambushed Roberts and fucked off with it. A great rider never given the right equipment and perishing in a Dutch Championship race at some open road dive.
Barry Sheen was a extremely good adviser , working for Aussie tv ,tech , tactical, those race callers gave Barry is due respect which was nice to see , BARRY RIRP (REST IN REV PEACE) HOPE YR NUTS N BOLTS HOLD YOU TOGETHER YOU ARE SURELY MISSED . From the fearless world over RIP
Great racing from my youth. These guys were my heros! It's amazing that a newer bone stock 600cc sportbike can blitz these lap times. Modern chassis's and tires with 500cc two stroke power........., I would pay to see that.
I think I would put that down as the '79 GP at Silverstone. The '82 GP in Argentina was not bad either but this is right up there.(Certainly in pre Moto GP days) Just don't find it as exciting these days.
This my era two strokes. My first bike was a Fizzy (FS1E). RD 200 electric. RD 250 air cooled, then 2 RD 350 LC'c with Micron exhausts. Could never afford the RD 500 LC.
I had an RD500LC, but sold it after two weeks of owning it so that I didn't either lose my license or kill myself. At speed it handled fine, but low speed handling was not what it was built for. Roundabouts were a nightmare at 30 mph, but no problem at all at 70 mph. A beautifully evil machine.
250LC, 350LC, then KR250 ending with an RG500. The only one I didn't race was the 250LC. The RG in Aust. mostly had to race in the 1000 class, 600 class was in my case ( being a South Aussie ) only at Mac Park. The RZ500 never had a chance, I held the lap record at MacPark from 86 til 92 on the RG and I sold it in 87! I used it on the road all the time and it pulled 11.5 @ 119mph down the quarter. The bike only had frequent oil changes, plugs, pads and new tyres to race it. Never lifted a head and it never even had a gearing change or even the fork oil. It was bought new and I was only seventeen. Clearing the plugs after it had warmed up left four trails in the mirrors and I never got tired of seeing that. The stock gearing was so tall that second was used in the suburbs, and second ran out at around 160 kmh. Also knew a guy who commuted on his, 1500km a week! It had 350,000 kay on it, he bought it new and the engine was mostly original and it never got washed. His only transport but definitely the best choice. I find it hard to think I sold it even though I knew it was the last roll of the dice for two strokes. But I raced and it was not competitive any more. Rode one 15 years later and have to admit that one disappointed me. My era also.
Bring back two strokes for me any day. I had an X7 with Microns back in '86 after I had passed my test, handled like a tea trolley but still quick for a 250. Rode my mate's 350 LC with allspeeds and it was the most exciting thing I ever rode and that includes all the large four strokes I owned later on.
Terrific race. A pity Mamola's bike ran out of something or other on the last lap. Commentary by Murray Walker and the all-time great John Surtees. What a treat. Nowadays when watching MotoGP we have to listen to the babbling verbal dysentery of Keith Heuwen - a never-wozzer if ever there was one.
Keith Huewen is a great commentator and was a very good rider in his day. He was second in the 350cc race at this very GP and had several good GP finishes on inferior machinery, not many have achieved that sitting on a couch!
Awesome riding from the Dutchman. Pure skill. What a brilliant race - and back in the day when this circuit was one of the fastest around. A great upload - thannks yds205!
You’re absolutely spot on there. I was there that day and at the time felt that we had been robbed of what could have been a really exciting race from Barry. Wrecked by Croz dropping it whilst pushing too hard at the beginning. Hey, that’s racing for you but, it still turned out to be a good race though and Jack surprised us all!
I think I was in the stand opposite the Woodcote chicane, got treated rather than stand at out usual place Club. And we chatted with Henry and George Cooper doing promotion work for Brut, my mum still has the umbrella we were given thanks for uploading, loved the 2 stroke era

was a superb lesson of riding - not only he rode strong compared to the factory bikes but he used his head to freak the mental of none other than the king himself . you can see all the race long how they were embarrassed with him sticking there.
.I agree. I think the most powerful acceleration thrill I ever got, was riding one of those. Except for the 750, I ridden pretty much every performance bike built, or one of its rivals. 2 stroke power seems to have that real urge when accelerating that you dont get from a 4 stroke that does a reasonably quicker 1/4 mile time
I can only assume yes, the old tyres and suspension were state of the art back then but obsolete nowadays, I think the 2-stroke powerband on these would have been vicious and very difficult to control, some very talented riders in this video. It kind of makes me think the current GP riders have it a little easier with anti-wheelie, traction control etc. but the new bikes also do 100kmh faster than these bikes so I cant blame them :-P
One off the Dutch great three!!! (probably the best) 1 'Jumping' Jack middelburg he won at Assen and Silverstone. (privateer) 2 Will Hartog ( The white giant ) One GP at Assen. (Factory supported) 3 Anton van Dulmen ( Den Boet ) One GP at Finland.(privateer) Sadly Jack died to early during a roadrace in Tolbert the Netherlands, iff he didnt i am sure he would be one off the greatest in the world!
It's great to see someone who finally knows his GP/MotoGP stuff, instead of all these young one's that can only come out with "Rossi is God", "Rossi is King" etc, and don't you dare mention 'Casey Stoner' or your a piece of shit, or worse. Since Stoner joined MotoGP in 2006, he's won 2 titles, with 35 wins and 63 pod's. In the same time Rossi also has 2 titles with only 26 wins and 60 pod's. They can't handle hearing this fact, and watch the crap I'll receive for posting it again.

Apparently Honda only fueled the NR 500 to do 10 or so laps as they thought it would be at the back or go bang but with Spencer on it that day it was going really well .
This actually was the case at the 1979 British GP. The prototype was a dog of a thing and Honda knew it, so they fueled them short to show well on the tv. By 1981 the bike was a much better prospect but it was just plain unreliable. It revved like crazy and broke a lot.
I'm reminded how scatterbrained Murrey Walker's commentary was " and it's Roberts, Kenny Roberts who takes the lead ... So Crosby leads, then Roberts, then Sheene ... "
Spoiler alert, cut to 43:30 to behold Murray Walker's classic exultation, "Look at his sponsor, he's absolutely, and understandably, and totally justifiably, beside himself", or watch the whole race, as it's something else. #silverstone #500cc * if I'm not mistaken, it's Murray, either way it's gold
You weren't even alive when we had Spencer(2 titles), Lawson(4), Gardiner(1), who broke a streak that would've seen Lawson win 5 in a row, Schwantz(1), Doohan (5 in a row), and would have won a lot more but for injury. 13 years+ of REAL champion (legends) Some of the guys you mentioned wouldn't have win a GP in that period. If you think late 90's to mid 2000's were exciting, you should have been born 15 years earlier. I like what I like and you like who you do and NOTHING will change that.
Back then it took about a year to get used to the powers and characteristics of a 500. Today they just move from Moto 2 to MotoGP and start winning from the start.

He was saving is tires for the last lap. What a drive from a privateer.
Really amazing ThE 3 hollanders....they had everything against, but they GOT very good results

I was in the stands at stow corner 40 years ago a very youthful 20 year old 😫😫
I remember that race well, Crosby had a price on his head for taking out Baza. Look at the crowds there compared to now, those were the days.

The lean angle on cornering is so much more now that they are almost ground level.
True but the riding style these days exaggerates the lean angle a bit because of the way they hang off the side of the bike
Look at the parapets at 1:53 lol

DORNA. Please note the sizr of the grid and the massive crowd-one of which as me!
Because of Barry Sheene.

did ducati have any riders/bikes at this time? i guess they rode the 600cc back then?
No,Ducati never had a GP team back then
No Murray, that's Roberts giving Lucchinelli the GIRUY. Fuckssakes Murray ya banger, keep an eye on the screen.
Had to stop watching once Sheene dismounted. Barry was my 2nd sporting hero after Muhammad Ali.
I could not keep on watching either
