1997 - The year of Doohan and especially Repsol Honda 12 wins for Doohan and Repsol Honda achieved the perfect season won every single race 12 for Doohan, 2 for Criville and 1 for Okada. 4 races Japan, Spain, Germany and Indonesia were podium lockouts and 2 of them Japan and Spain were Top 4 lockouts Doohan, Criville and Okada on the V4 and Taku Aoki on the works V Twin complete and utter domination that not even Mercedes F1 could manage.
Grandes recuerdos.
Doohan landed in Moto GP in PERFECT time...he never one ANYTHING till all the greats retired that he competed against initially..in 89 when he came out. Lawson, Gardner, Rainey, Swantz, etc. Look at that starting board. A few people that were just starting out that got great...and that's it.. Bless everyone..Happy Holidays coming up..
Mick Doohan was a formidable rider and competed superbly well against those ones. In 1990 he finished 3rd overall and 2nd in 1991, just only 8 points behind the winner. In 1992 he was dominating the season winning almost every single race til he suffered a nasty crash in Assen.
Back then? Bump-starting the machine off the line has been going on since the 70's. Barry Sheene, Kenny Roberts and company had to run to their machines then bump start them!
They still do there's no start button on a motogp bike 😂. They have these machines that they stick the rear wheel on and it spins and they bump start them, that's why when they crash they have the marshals push them to bump start.
I thought he was fast down the straight because he was good through the last corner. Checa passed him a couple of times at the end of the straight. I don't think he lacked power. Checa and Criville both got him at the end of the straight.
Some riders like Eddie lawson said in a straight line the Honda would just take off and he used to say there was a Honda lane on the road, doohan actually had a bike with tamed down power, not to mention all the mangled body parts to contend with
@Sottiontherod in the "classics" section on the MotoGP website and all the archives in fact only go back to 92' would be cool if they dug up another couple decades of footage
Diego Ruiz well, the fact one single rider won that many races was because he was so superior to the rest of the pack. It has nothing to do with the bikes. Once Doohan retired from riding, the championship opened up like never before. The last 10 years only 3 or 4 riders per season are capable of getting a win. Back in 1999-2000 almost 10 riders were able to get one. Even McWilliams (14th in 2000) got to the podium twice. Also, many competitive bikes than nowadays: on this particular race: 3 factory NSR, 3 works NSR, 4 works YZR, 2 factory RGV, 1 factory NSRV, 1 works NSRV plus the Aprilia, all of them capable of catching a 3 spot on the race.
How easy they forget the great battles of Eddie, Wayne, and Kevin. Besides Nicky, the last great Americans in contention for world titles. Hoping the manufacturer's get closer to Ducati on the straights. Maybe BMW takes Toprak and Garrett to MotoGP in 25.
Today’s riders wouldn’t know how to ride a 500cc 2 stroke, (no electronics to tame the power) & big difference regarding safety standards, compared to today!..
I was too young at the time to watch this but I have this edited commentary. Can anyone tell me who were the English commentators in GP during the 90s?
When will you air the 1998 Grand Prix in Catalunya? I remember the race was quite controversial as Biaggi ignored the black flag and subsuquently penalized and barred from the podium as the victory was handed to Mick Doohan
The two narrators were all wet about Doohan. "Doohan is on the bike, there it goes the 4th world champion. The finest". "Doohan is taking a corner, there it goes the eleven race winner these season". And like that alllllllllllll the F race. Not even the worse spanish narrator can do it like that... Not even Nico Abad.
They do have to bleat on a bit to try and fill up airtime. Mind you there were slides, wobbles and so on by all riders that they missed talking about. Doohan had a Stoner sized slide on the last lap which they missed. So just a hair's breadth from having it all go wrong, either crashing or letting Checa through. Was a fantastic race.
He rode the monster nsr500 with a leg that was supposed to be amputated, it was literally hanging off his body, then he was on a machine that was a beast to ride, the bike was so touchy with the throttle if you gave it 2 mm too much then it throws you off like a rocket, that's why they called them the unrideables,
Just wondering!?? Did "Valentino Rossi" ever race 🏁 against "Mick Doohan"?!? I know "Valentino Rossi" raced in the 125cc class for a while before he moved to the 500cc class but do not know when.? I was just wanting to know because "Doohan" could give "Rossi" a go, just like "Casey Stoner" did. So did they ever race each other? & if so when.???
Mick just like Modern Day Marc on the best machine built and fearful to leave only accident changed that ..... Kevin was better and faster on a inferior machine for his entire Suzuki Career ...
I'm 5 months late here but you may remember that Doohan was riding with one leg that didn't work from an earlier race accident. He won all his championships using the rear brake controlled by an extra small brake lever on the left handlebar because his right leg couldn't do much more than hold him upright. You are right that Schwantz was a great rider, and from what I have been told, a really nice guy.
For me Mr Doohan is absolutely right, moto gp is heading the same direction as F1, you need to ask your engineer to increase speed.. don't do this to motogp..
Mick doohan was the best driver He was better den schwanz or wayne .i think he was better as rossi it was a other time. Those are not exhaust pipes , those are expansion chambers , the exhaust pipes are the little things at the end to attenuate the noise ... or so they say . Those bikes were very , very noisy .
97, the year I started watching MotoGP races with my dad! I still remember almost all the names and the graphics ecc. Such a nostalgia trip!
For me 2 strokes are the MotoGP golden times still watching this during 2020 corona lockdowns
That was his 12th win in the season.....Omgoodness. WOW. Great race that was.
DOOHAN was such a sledgehammer!
Yeah, Spains were always fast at Spain races but he was almost unbeatable everywhere. KING of the 2-strokes!
There is no throwing leg technic for entering the corner during these era. Such the beautiful riding era.
Watched MotoGP last night On Foxtel, was really bored compared to watching these classics, definitely not As fun to watch As these races
How the motogp classics save our quarantine time 😋👍
I miss the two strokes, this was a great Race!
Checa really challenged doohan in this race, some really brave moves under brakes

thanks for all the old races MotoGP!!
I was there! My first ever race of 500cc/MotoGP :)
LUCKY!
+José Triviño Nice!
My first race was my last race. Malaysia 2011.
Two strokes era is always my favorite...
Doohan And Crivillé battles.... incredible time...
Doohan landed in Moto GP in PERFECT time...he never one ANYTHING till all the greats retired that he competed against initially..in 89 when he came out. Carlos earned the nickname ‘chuck it checa’ , I miss these old Smoker GP’s 😎👌🏻
My favorite era and my favorite riders.
man i miss this, proper balls out on mental machinery.
Mick had to work for that one
Checa wanted it badly.
NSR500, best bike ever.
tetsuya harada said 1999 APRILIA RSV500 is best
YZR500
Mick .... my hero .
quick mick the very best rider of 500GP
I need the Era back!
Ciao a tutti che emozione a vedere le moto 500 di una volta . E con i campioni degni anni 90
As much as I liked Mick Doohan, it was such a one horse race most of the time. Just so much closer nowadays.
It was in 1997, 96 and 98 were a bit closer.
Get the riders of today to ride these 500cc beasts and see how it goes, completely different animals compared to today's bikes
That's hilarious. I had no idea they used to push start the bikes on the grid back then.
Back then? Bump-starting the machine off the line has been going on since the 70's. Barry Sheene, Kenny Roberts and company had to run to their machines then bump start them!
Actually dates back to the 1930’s and should still be used today. Of course MotoGP is dead due to politics just like 2 strokes so WTF?!!!😎
They still do there's no start button on a motogp bike 😂. They have these machines that they stick the rear wheel on and it spins and they bump start them, that's why when they crash they have the marshals push them to bump start.
Mike Doohan : 50:45 52:07 52:14 52:42 52:48 52:59 Alex Criville : 51:35 51:37 51:39 52:07

I wish I could smell the NSR 500 smoke scent
18:30 all the way to the white line. love those wide two-stroke/no-engine-brake lines.
I miss the old la caixa corner, the new one is not as difficult as that
I was there and it was awesome
Doohan clearly was carrying more speed out of the last corner. That commentator is always saying different bikes have more power.
I thought he was fast down the straight because he was good through the last corner. Checa passed him a couple of times at the end of the straight. I don't think he lacked power. Checa and Criville both got him at the end of the straight.

Doohan!! King of 500cc
No riding aids everything is manual, great year
Yeah, no techonology
Not really, it already has some of the techs.
In fact, traction control was first introduced in Kawasaki KR500 in 1980
beautiful race! thx for posting
500cc 2stroke no ECU..real monster!!!
It has ECU tbh for some techs like controlling the fuel injection (first introduced in 1993) and traction control (1980)
500 CC 2 Strokes, awesome racing machines
@Sottiontherod in the "classics" section on the MotoGP website and all the archives in fact only go back to 92' would be cool if they dug up another couple decades of footage
this is how motogp should be like...
Yeah, with one guy winning 10 out of 11 races, right? Get your shit together, people!
***** Gotta love how people get all nostalgic. The true facts of history get tossed right out the window.
Diego Ruiz well, the fact one single rider won that many races was because he was so superior to the rest of the pack. It has nothing to do with the bikes. That Dodge Viper Safety Car, though.

Last generations of 500 cc already has ECUs actually like TC (since 1980)
i bet this is the place were the famous mick picture was taken on the last lap with 5 corners to go
mick doohan the best
Big Mick 🏁🏁🏁🏁
Big Honda 🏁🏁🏁🏁
You know how hard these beast were to ride Jesus Christ
great race!
Was this while everyone was on the Big Bang engine or was Mick on the Screamer? The Hondas all look very even on the straights.
Look at how many Japanese riders back in those days. Sad state of japan motorcycle racing today.
Great race, but shocking camera work
God I needed that motgp "fix"
I was too young at the time to watch this but I have this edited commentary. Can anyone tell me who were the English commentators in GP during the 90s?
Toby moody and julian ryder. At least in late 90s and early 2000s
c'è da dire che la moto di Checa andava la metà rispetto alle ufficiali
+gregorio garcea le non ufficiali prendono sempre briciole
Du Grand Mick Doohan !!!

De la belle arsouille, comme je les aimes. on en redemande!!
48 poles, 45 wins. 1st 1st 2nd 1st 1st 1st 1st...
58 poles and 54 wins for doohan
Next year win the first spanish in the history, Alex Crivillé.
Doohan is better than Marquez
Satrian Nasri Why?
No driving assist all in the hands of the rider thats why.
One of those things that is unknowable because they are from different eras. All a racer can do is beat the competition of their time.

Please Indonesian GP 1997 full race🙏🙏
Nice the motorcycle 500cc 2 stroke, this is motorcycle faster
MotoGp looks so slow and not close racing like the old 500!
NSR 500...the best
Too bad Barry sheene and Wayne Rainey weren't still racing.

7:51 - Why does a bike need 4 exhaust pipes?
Two Strokes use expansion chambers, one for each cylinder. Its a tuned exhaust system that allows two strokes to perform at their highest efficiently.
Those are not exhaust pipes , those are expansion chambers , the exhaust pipes are the little things at the end to attenuate the noise ... or so they say . Those bikes were very , very noisy .
Rossi helmet looks like crap
***** Rossi isn't in MotoGP/500cc back in 1997. He's still in 125cc (now Moto3) back in 97.
Thanks!
