On the heels of Hispanic Heritage Month, we're giving you a look at a lesser-known population, but one that is equally vibrant, the Mexican-Jewish community.
Here’s my families story! As a 1/4 Mexican jew lol My family comes from Poland, right before ww2 they tried escaping to the US, however they were turned away. They decided to go to Mexico instead (Mexico city) there my grandpa was born as well as his siblings. His family worked to hunt down the remaining nazis in Latin America, and my grandpa went to serve in the Mexican army. He married an American woman and had my mother while they were still living in Mexico. They moved when my mom was a baby and he got his US citizenship 13 years later. I absolutely adore the Mexican Jewish community, I don’t necessarily consider myself a part of it since only my grandpa is Mexican, but I’ve witnessed just how passionate they are about their culture! Me encanta la cultura, y me encanta mi familia :)
Hola/Shalom! We have a very similar story, my ancestors were also from Poland and Jews, they also tried escaping to U.S.A. Before WW2 and they also couldn’t enter either so they went to Mexico as well! That’s how my family stayed in Mexico and I am Mexican and Jewish as well!

Mexico has a large Jewish community. Ashkenazi Jews make up the majority, having immigrated to Mexico from Central and Eastern Europe in the late 1800s and early 1900s, up until WWII. There is also a sizable Sephardic community in Mexico as well.
As of today I would say the Mizrahi community in Mexico, jews originaly from Syria comprise the majority of jews in Mexico. A vibrant, tightly knit and extremely well organized community. When mexican jews came to San Diego they replicated the lifestyle they where acostumed to so they are still a close knitt community.
Years ago I showed a friend a family photo of 2 older brothers & a younger sister ... He asked me who are the Jewish folks next to you ? I replied thats my family ! Lol. San Luis Potosi , Mx.
I am a californian of lebanese mexican ancestry and I too and inspired to represent my ancestors in film and art. My family from southern lebanon spent alot of time traveling and doing business in the US and then my great grandfather relocated the whole family to mexico city, then my grandfather moved to tijuana as a kid with his brother who unfortunately was shot and killed in tijuana 1958. My grandfather crossed over as a kid and has lived his whole life in bright and sunny san diego.
Wow I thought my family were the only Mexicans with Jewish ancestry. My grandma ( dads mom) was born n Santa Monica California in 1915. Her mother my great grandma was born in Hermosillo and her mother last names Boyd and Rogers. Her family were from England and somehow moved to northern Mexico early 1800s. Great Grandfather name was Mordecai Rogers. Our DNA had Jewish ancestry and we do some traditional Jewish holidays.

I am a Mexican jew of Polish and Russian parents, who emigrated to Mexico between 1928 and 1937, My father was very well-known in the Jewish community in Mexico, 1969 we made aliyah to Israel and I lived in Israel until my mother died 15 years ago, then I came back to Mexico and married my present wife, I am planning to go back to Israel in 5 years.
Surprisingly, the Jewish community in Mexico is predominantly Ashkenazi, rather than Sephardic as I had expected. Growing up in southern New Mexico, the Jews I knew were Sephardic, like myself. So, I was surprised to learn that the Jewish population in Mexico has a different ethnic background. The synagogues in Mexico City are beautiful.

His family worked to hunt down the remaining nazis in Latin America, and my grandpa went to serve in the Mexican army. He married an American woman and had my mother while they were still living in Mexico. They moved when my mom was a baby and he got his US citizenship 13 years later.
I absolutely adore the Mexican Jewish community, I don’t necessarily consider myself a part of it since only my grandpa is Mexican, but I’ve witnessed just how passionate they are about their culture! Me encanta la cultura, y me encanta mi familia :)

Mexico has a large Jewish community. Ashkenazi Jews make up the majority, having immigrated to Mexico from Central and Eastern Europe in the late 1800s and early 1900s, up until WWII. There is also a sizable Sephardic community in Mexico as well.

As of today I would say the Mizrahi community in Mexico, jews originaly from Syria comprise the majority of jews in Mexico. A vibrant, tightly knit and extremely well organized community. When mexican jews came to San Diego they replicated the lifestyle they where acostumed to so they are still a close knitt community.

I am a californian of lebanese mexican ancestry and I too and inspired to represent my ancestors in film and art. Wow I thought my family were the only Mexicans with Jewish ancestry. My grandma ( dads mom) was born n Santa Monica California in 1915. Her mother my great grandma was born in Hermosillo and her mother last names Boyd and Rogers. Her family were from England and somehow moved to northern Mexico early 1800s. Great Grandfather name was Mordecai Rogers. Our DNA had Jewish ancestry and we do some traditional Jewish holidays.
