I have had this issue now for 3weeks. I ordered new trunk handle and new motor. Did not fix my problem. After i saw this video i checked the wires, and 1 cable was cut off. The rest had no isolation left, so they had to be fixed as well. Thanks you for the video. That helped me alot!
Happy to hear that it was of help! This is one of my old videos that does not contain text overlay, but it does have annotations that can be read, as long as annotations is enabled. Thanks for watching & taking the time to comment!
Thanx for the video .. Its very helpful. I have the same problem of yours The motor is not having enough power to move ! There is something wrong with the wires ! How did you solve that ?
Hussain Ebrahim Sorry, this is one of my old videos (no text overlay). The wires are broken... a new wiring harness is the best fix. You can repair just the broken wires, but they will break again. ua-cam.com/video/RI-i4dchXuc/v-deo.htmlm59s
The pinch point on the harness near the hinges is the worst. Wires always cracking...and a replacement costs a fortune. I've fixed the wires so many times they are getting too short to join anymore. My next repair will be to just to replace the damaged wires completely in the harness.
Chris Quetsch Yes, I have done that as well... attach a new wire to the old one, pull it through until it gets to the kink, attach to the old one (the other broken end) and then pull that one through. Then you can splice it at the outer ends to the harness plug and the component in the lid.
Well...I went to fix the harness and now the lock is no longer unlatching the trunk. I've been manually opening the trunk with the key for the past few weeks, so I'm guessing a linkage popped or broke. Being an early MKIV, there is no "hostage release handle" inside the trunk. Is it possible to remove the trunk lid liner with the trunk closed? I really don't want to cut a hole in it and am hoping there is a plan C. Thanks!!
Chris Quetsch Yes, you can "lower" the liner from the inside... move the linkage to open the trunk and then fully remove the liner. I always leave the liner off and close the lid / check the system before putting it back on.
Thanks for the confirmation. Climbed inside the trunk from the inside and got the liner out. Turned out that stupid plastic piece that the actuator head butts against broke. Here is a critical junction point in which the key lock and actuator connect to the latch and they make it out of plastic. It's lasted since 2001 so I suppose I can't complain too much. Everything has to die eventually. Got some epoxy drying as we speak, but I don't think it will hold. Hopefully get a few cycles out of it until I get a new / used part. Still easier than a timing belt.
Well brother back agian. I needed to replace my L and R trunk lid brakets as well a latch and lock bar. Put it all on the way it came of and is not lining up or even shutting. I replaced the plastic cover on bottom trim and also does not sit flush with the bar. Its actually pushing in the flap.. Need help broski..
@@EXOVCDS i got it after 2 days lolo.. I finally had my kid sit on trunk lid and i put latch on the bar and just screwed it on that way lolo... Thanks for replying..
Hey boos so I got a vw 337 gti and my key won't open the trunk but I can open it thru the front bottom but the key won't turn in slot I took the panel of to have a look it all looks good I can't figure it out idk if this is a original trunk or not I wasn't told it has a clean title
If the key doesn't turn, either the tumblers in the cylinder don't match the key or the cylinder itself is stuck / seized. If the key goes in easy, then the cylinder should be ok and it it probably a mismatched cylinder... but can't be sure. You should be able to remove the assembly, disassemble it on the bench and see what the issue is.
Was the rod adjusted beforehand to long? Dosen't the motor activate when the key is used also? Noticed you temp.repaired the harness and adjusted the rod .
HI! Thanks for uploading these videos. A few of them have come handy for my 03 Jetta 1.8T. My question is how do you reattach the release cable to the emergency latch without it falling out of the holder? (The holder is circular piece by the lever that you slip the hook through with a small slice on top to fit the wire through) I am not sure if I broke the clip but the wire is bare with an assembly that looks like it creates tension to pull the wire to manually open it (shown at 1:56). When I reattach the hook and put the cover back on, the lever will not create enough tension to pull on the hatch latch open. Anything will help! My manual has no information and I haven't found anything online yet. Thank You!
+nastassjia steach The cable sleeve needs to be anchored on that metal plate... the bare cable then attaches to the lever / linkage. The cable sleeve also needs to be anchored at the handle end. Try adjusting the long rod that runs up & down (visible 4:25 and on). You should be able to figure out if too much free play is in the cable or in the linkage and then adjust accordingly (if that makes sense).
I noticed that my wiring harness is where my problem is ....and by mistake i closed the boot ...( trunk )...now im not able to open it...thus i need to open the boot from the inside ...so i can get to the harnes ...its so frustrating ....
Hi Thomas, have question. My jetta 2002. Press the trunk release to open. I v Can hear the actuator operating but the truck won't pop open. Press and press etc. But trunk won't pop open. Is the actual motor that open the latch to pop the truck bad or something else. Thanks in advance
My 01 vw jetta tdi does not have that option, the key on the trunk and the key button and the button inside does not work, but I hear the relay but nothing from the trunk, any ideas? thanks
Remove the panel inside the trunk and open the trunk. Once the trunk is open, you can do power & ground checks as well as check the wiring where the hinge is.
My trunk button doesn't work but when I unlock the car door the trunk open. Tried new different key fob same result won't open when you hit trunk release..unlocking car opens trunk...Now gas release won't work either have to manually open..2006 vw Jetta TDI.......any ideas
Sorry... I didn't record the opening part. Fold the rear seats forward and remove the trunk panel. With the panel off, you can get at the linkage to open the trunk.
@@EXOVCDS Thanks for you reply. I have tried once but gave up. Managed to lift the back panel from inside so could see the locking mechanism but wasn't to sure what to do after hence why been trying find a video no luck so far but i will have another try.
Worst case, you might have to remove the license plate and drill a hole into the lid, so that you can get access to the release rod... the hole will then have to be closed by welding a piece of metal into place and painting it to match. This is "just a guess". I have not had the luck to try and get into such a locked trunk.

Hi.iv got a 2000 and my trunk would not open.iv managed to open it manually. I then closed it and it worked fine after trying several times.i closed up everything and then it started again.help please.
safiyya shaik If you open & close it several time (quickly) you are not giving the electric motor a chance to "lock" the trunk. Using the key in the lid, when you apply little pressure (to open), does the electric motor assist? If no, when you apply more pressure to the key, are you manually able to unlock the latch? If no, then you have two issues. The motor is not assisting (micro switch in key cylinder or wiring) and a mechanical linkage that is out of adjustment. Leave the inside panel off and check everything again. You do not need to close the lid to test the system, you just need to close the latch of the lid to check the operation. The latch has a micro switch that can fail or the wiring plug at the micro switch can get corroded.
I tried opening it with key, doest want to.but if I release the lever manually inside the trunk it obviously opens.then it works automatically nornal after that 3 or 4 times.and then its stuck again, back to square one

Fold the seats forward, remove the panel from the rear lid (several Phillips screws)... once you have enough screws off, you can lower the panel and open the trunk by moving the linkage with your hand.
alonso king Jetta? Golf? Passat? Other? If you have access to the linkage... you should be able to open it. If not, take it to a shop... you already have the panel off, do it should not take them long to open.
With the panel hanging... there's not much room. The cable has a black plastic clip with 2 teeth. You need to tilt the cable end so that the black plastic piece with the teeth lift up, then you can pull back on the cable and remove the cable from the lever and unhook the cable kook from the lever.

Provided that the key turns the lock cylinder... frozen cylinder is also common, due to lack of use.
