You have to realize that they are built for work, rather than comfort. Yes, you can get AC and even automatic transmission if you don't like the shifting, but they are about driving a few kilometers from your house to your rice paddy or garden, and maybe hauling a rototiller or a rice combine. A kei tora in NYC is a ridiculous mixture.
As others have stated the heater core has been bypassed due to leaks OR the heater core is plugged. Most radiator rebuild shops can recore a heater core and have it back in a day or 2. Cheaper and faster than buying from overseas. (And I am speaking from experience with my JDM Mitsubishi Delica L400)
Hi nice mini Truck.. I'm in NYC too..I have 96 Delica ,,crazy looks like u said. Who in the city do you USE to service your JDM,, LOOKING FOR NICE JDM MECHANIC THANKS,
I knew that I wanted a street truck. My research lead me to the Honda Acty. I'm very happy with my choice. Getting a van means reclining seats and plenty of room. Seating for 4. Full upholstery. A tachometer. The 5 speed allows me to drive at 110/km/h, which is tolerable. The rear engine makes it reasonably quiet. And parts are easy to get compared to a non Honda. I wish I'd gotten a clean, one owner Limited, but I've found a clock, and the body color bumpers. If a street truck is your goal, I 'd certainly consider the Honda Acty or Subaru Sanbar vans. Leave the high geared pickups for the off road guys.
it is not for speed, or for comfort or for looks, it is an utilitarian mini truck, to move things from one point to another, for delivery, for work within big warehouses, and it does a perfect job, like no other country can provide, very versatile, very economic, very reliable and long lasting.
If it's bypassed, it's likely because the heater core is leaking. The good news is, it really isn't all that hard to swap out a new one and it doesn't even have to be the exact one it came with.
Its a lot warmer in Japan most often and Kei cabs get as warm as they do smelly of gas. Rises off engine compartment into cab. Owner disconnected heater core so he didn't have to swelter all the time.
Takes me back seeing a video about this van. Used to work on a large golf complex in the UK and we had 2/3 of these for carting stuff round (only vehicle we could get down some of the tracks bar a mower/golf buggy). Absolutely hated these things with a passion 🤣 everytime you hit a bump it genuinely feels like being in a boat in a storm (regardless of what you're carrying in the back) , they have a very high centre of gravity and your knees are the only crumple zones (especially bad for me at over 6ft). That said it was always a giggle trying to see how fast you could go on a straight 🤣. I'm glad I never had to go on a public road in one all the same
yup. get a huge rim. throw off your gear ratios and speedometer. destroy your gas mileage.. burn through your clutch and work that 658cc engine overtime with plenty of preignition.. PS: Your redline is nowhere near 10,000 rpm. it is 5700rpm. Yes it is still a TRUCK, even though it is a Kei. You're getting horrible mileage because japanese people drive these things at 60Kph and it does not see 100+Kph on the highway like you're trying to make it do. Get yourself a tachometer and set your redline to 5700rpm. You will see your noise will coincide with this. IT does not rev high and if you ride it at it's appropriate speed, you will see that 40 miles per gallon in normal, it does not get bad mileage, you are speeding and shifting very late. Treat it like a big rig that is very slow instead. Yes shift early and get to 4th and just chill out at 65-70kph. in fact, you can shift to 4th or block shift as well.
Dont go down bumpy roads i repeat don't go down bumpy roads i upgraded the tire from low pro to thicker an updated suspension still don't hit craters unless u want fished out from said hole

I live in Canada, we can import these as new as 15 years old, the newer fuel injected 5 speeds are FAR better than the old carbed 4 speed trucks in basically every way.
@@Waybeforethefame They'll still top out at around 110 on flat ground, but they are MUCH happier at 80-90, so they'll cruise our regional highways all day and not feel over stressed.
@C G 25 years or older for import in the US so no fuel injected models yet. Just spoke to a Boeki rep and they didn't start making FI models until 1999.
I got some used openers for those gates if you want them they're in Chicago. I really want one of these trucks they're super cool. Thanks for sharing your experience
yeah lol that first gear is the granny gear, for just getting moving. You might want to check your carb, mine is a 92 and doesn't smell like gas at all. Ever. Might have a gas leak or a drip.
You hate having to shift so often but you want a 5 speed? You do realize you’ll shift MORE often when you have more gears, right? Or do you just want a higher top gear?
I wish there was a dealer in NYC that sold k cars the trucks are okay but I definitely want to get a car like a Subaru or Nissan or maybe a van but no trucks is it cheaper to get a automatic or more expensive. I feel like a cars are going to get more popular in the city because of the gas price
@@Waybeforethefame all the places I seen in New Jersey & the east coast in general sell trucks a few of them sell Vans but they're very pricey but to be totally honest. I literally want a car a Subaru or a Nissan can't find any on them on the East Coast but thank you all look up this name
Did you buy it for west Texas 85 mph cruising?????? there meant only for stoplight to stoplight in city driving hauling groceries........dead animals........3rd world utility ........ bags of rice.......36 small people crammed into the bed........?
@@Waybeforethefame yeah, here in Vermont (America's DMV) one DMV office didn't want to register my Hiace van because they though it was a KEI vehicle. My advice is do not share your enthusiasm about your vehicle, the people at DMV don't appreciate it. Show only the essential paperwork (registration form, bill of sale and VIN certification ONLY) Tell as little as possible about the van. If they ask you what type of vehicle it is just say 'Van or Pick Up' .....I wouldn't even say 'minivan or mini truck'. Mini trucks here in Vermont are not legal on the roads but I'm gonna fudge the paperwork, outright lie and hope to get it registered. Sure, huge polluting Bro-Dozers are ok but mini trucks no? FUCK THAT !!!!

True true, same things i hate about the kei i love for other reasons
Interesting about new york. They are everywhere in Tokyo and Sapporo. Small means maneuverability.

maybe your right i might just get a kei van next see whats thats about 🤔
Sounds like the choke might be stuck. Also might need valve adjustment. Tight valves, will cause raw gas to blow back thru the carb

100% facts
they bypassed the heater core....maybe its leaking
Heater core is probably shot. Usually people bypass it the way yours is hooked up. If you hook it up and its shot. Antifreeze will fill into truck
agreed

I agree
You should make sure that heater core isn't leaking before you hook it up. You could have a hot mess in your cab otherwise

man hitting potholes in this truck humbles you real quick lol

I love these little trucks. How do you register it in NY?. I'm on long Island and would like to get one eventually.
Since recording this it has definitely got harder in NY, i would recommend buying one that comes with a US state title
Could you tell me what rims are on the truck Im looking for new tires and wheels for my hijet, yours look great, thanks for the video
Your best bet is rx7 rims or ordering from japan it’s hard to get nice 4x110 rims for hijets
yeah lol that first gear is the granny gear, for just getting moving. You might want to check your carb, mine is a 92 and doesn't smell like gas at all. Ever. Might have a gas leak or a drip.
might have to give that a try this weekend

Or do you just want a higher top gear?
I want a 5 speed for highway use. My 4speed max's out at like 100km, thinking of getting a sambar next after this truck
Did you see my camper man oh my god it is so legit. Has anything you'd see in a motorhome, like home in your bed.
that's a bypass. it's been bypassed.
what kind of mpg do you get is it like in the 20's 30's? Since its at high rpm all the time
Yeah 20s and low 30s if you drive slow
do you know about the vents behind the headlights? They drop down like ashtrays and blow hard on your legs. They are very nice.
In my Sambar, I don’t even use first gear. You may try starting in second to see how it feels.
i do it sometimes but i don't want to get in the habit and kill the clutch
Thanks for sharing.
Mine is 5 gears
On your heater hoses! It’s being bypassed! Unhook those two hoses and figure out your in and out hoses and hook it up and your heater will work!
You can always start from 2nd gear, maybe 3rd.
That’ll shorten my clutch life
they do that with the heater hoses when the core leaks
yeah thats what i figured
redline for ef-es engine is like 6700rpm it's no joke they rev high. Most motors don't rev that high.
No 7000 rpm?
hey how much load can this truck carry max?
They’re rated for 750lbs but people put over 1k no problem.
7k is redline. Your heater core might be leaking since they bypassed it.
really only 7k?

theres a few places in NJ and PA that import cars
JAPSTARZ is one

no not in Texas
Make it an offroader the 4 speed would be great
How did you get it registered in NYS ?
DMV was annoying AF, but i did a title transfer and it was 123
