What's helping me to identify and have awareness is to observe myself using language that doesn't differentiate between thought and feeling, as they are one singular thing.
Words such as 'anticipation', 'upset', 'sensitization', when I focus on that, help me feel the feeling and the thought at the same time.

We feel based on our convictions about right or wrong, justice and injustice, and the sense of safety and insecurity. Then we tie that emotion to our memory of an event.
The feeling and memory are experienced simultaneously, along with the convictions/concerns that brought about the emotion. Any new conclusions arising from the situation do arise after the fact.
That biological memory packet is filed away. While it is filed away and inactive, it is frozen and unchangeable. When your mind goes back to open that memory packet, you can alter the memory packet: by changing your convictions and/or your perceptions about what really happened (like if there was a misunderstanding), with each change in perception and/or conviction, you can change the emotions arising from that memory, and you can change any conclusions that you made from that event.
That said, you had some foundational thoughts that gave rise to the emotions, and you had resulting conclusions from the emotionally-charged event. (Unless you killed off most of your emotions, in which case, you would have to intentionally rebuild your emotional capacities, then go back to each memory, remembering it with your emotional capacities activated again, have an emotional response, and that would attach a proper emotion to it, making the memory packet complete.)
This model does not negate repressed emotions, which are emotions that were experienced, but which are currently too heavy to be brought to mind with current levels of coping skills.
That said, your perceptions and conclusions of that given event warns the biological portion of your conscience (which is literally seated in specialized neurons in the heart that issue ooey-gooey, contented, or peaceful biochemicals when what you are planning to do or just did lines up with whatever you *currently* believe is right, but those neurons kick off a (mild or massive) thunderstorm of warning-hormones if you are planning or just did something that you do not believe is right).
Later, if you did something that was wrong, your conscience-neurons in the heart, and your emotional neurons in your gut *must* be informed by your memories ..... So when you are facing new circumstances, as your biological-conscience and the seat-of-your-emotions start responding to your experiences, they begin sending out subconscious encouragement and/or warnings about various events/possible-responses that are actively or subconsciously be pondered by your physical systems - based in past not just on your convictions, but now also based on your experiences.
IMHO, that is all separate from our spiritual systems.
Our spiritual systems can be dead to us or alive to us. If our spiritual system is dead to us, the biological-conscience bears witness to a higher spiritual plain, and how we do not rise up to that higher, spiritual plain on our own.
Once alive, that higher, spiritual plain provides us with the opportunity to better inform ourselves what right and wrong is, whether safety does or does not matter, and on a deeper level, when and why it does or does not matter.
That spiritual state, once finally opened to us, does help us navigate the biological processes, but does not stop them.
For example, when a man says certain words to a woman who is mentally inclined to give her heart to him, her biological response issues trust and other chemicals: even if he has proven himself to be untrustworthy! She can become addicted to the biochemicals arising when he says those things, so she ends up trusting him. Then again, she might experience a trauma response, cuz she has allowed her mind to be informed that this fellow cannot be trusted.
Otoh, IF she has a spiritual command system that led her to trust the source of an actual spiritual birth, then she has access to greater, growing wisdom, along with the comfort of a powerful, loving, spiritual being --- along with a confidence that arises when one trusts a command such as "guard your heart," while trusting the giver of the command to be with you, empowering you to guard your heart increasingly wisely.....

I respectfully disagree. All of those memories created your emotions. As you just demonstrated, your memory came first. The emotion came second.
If we practice letting go of all of our thoughts about the past, which contain all of our guilt, and all of our thoughts about the future, which contain all of our fear, and being in the present moment, we will feel only love in the present moment, because there are no thoughts to trigger guilt and no thoughts to trigger fear.
We are not letting go of the past. The past is gone. We are not letting go of the future. The future is not here. We are letting go of our thoughts about the past and future. All thoughts are ephemeral. They have no substance. They flit into our mind and back out again. We can practice continually letting go of our thoughts about the past and future. This will let us be in the peace of the present moment for longer and longer periods of time.
Simply, imagine your thoughts about the past or future shooting up into the sky, or imagine that they are playing on a TV in your head, and turn them off with a remote. Whatever images work for you.
Just for the record, I think your insights are profound. They have helped me and I have sent them to others.
