it's not about material at that point. it's already dead lost. black has literally zero development and not even a good way to start it. some lines you'll also lose the rook on f8 e.g. after dxc exd cxd Be7. white also has all kinds of mating ideas e.g. Bf6 - obviously you can't take, and if you don't take, well queen is still coming and it's just hopeless.
This is actually a very interesting variation. I imagine Carlsen, with his insane memory, probably knows a lot of these positions, but still. We get to watch them enter into the minds of a different player.

There is at least some logic to including Fischer Random, but "finishing somebody else's game" will always be entertainment, not really serious competition.

If I had to explain. All he had to do after the Queen Check, Anand had to trade Black Knight for Magnus White Bishop. Then Magnus would either Trade with Queen or White Knight. If Queen, Anand could have Forked Magnus Black Knight and Rook with Queen on b2. However if Magnus Traded with White Knight instead, Anand would have to move Queen to e2 while threatening the pawn. Magnus will move his Knight on d2 with the Knight and Queen protecting the pawn. Then Anand would have to force Bishop on b7 off that square because that is the strongest piece in position. Even if Magnus threats the Queen with Rook that is on d5, Anand can move his Queen to a7 and she will be safe.
If you want to put into perspective how ridiculous Carlsen's mind is: Magnus was interviewed after the game. He not only remembered that he'd already seen the position, but he correctly guessed that it was a Steinitz game. He had quite literally figured out that first move years, potentially decades, before this game.
He’s unreal. Memory, understanding of the game, creativity, ability under pressure, longevity and consistency across different formats- he has it all. The way he plays is just so special. People have nostalgia bias towards older players like Morphy or Capablanca- who whilst they are legends themselves no doubt, chess theory has evolved so much since then and Magnus will know more. Magnus is the greatest chess player of all times. He has proved he is the unquestionable #1 both during the pre-engine days as well as now when engines are so powerful.
I prefer things like this and fischer random to regular chess, the whole preparation especially with engine or even a team just defeats the fairness and spirit of the game.
Mangus is quick with his moves. How quickly you can take a wiser decision is all about chess. Vishy lost it again. That is why Magnus is number 1 player in the world..

I think the time was too little for the best moves to be calculated. It should be 30 mins maybe. The quality of the moves may drastically improve then. Like in this game it was definitely much difficult to play as black, ( moves were difficult to find as black) time taking.
It is amazing that game position which was played more than 100 years ago puzzles top players even in 2024 .It is not easy to find the way to win or find the way to hold . I like the format , they probably would not play Evans gambit if they start from initial position
Magnus still plays the world top players in blitz every week while Vishy doesn't. He forgets how deep you still have to calculate in blitz against today's players.
Not only is Magnus a great player but he also has that psychological hold over his opponents, Vishy played this game much worse than he'd normally play it against any other player. Same with Magnus' record against Hikaru, they already lose the game in their head even before the start of the game.
