Buick LeSabre: Air Bag Light On

- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- In this video I have a look at a 2005 Buick LeSabre that came in with the Air Bag light glowing. Service data and flow charts would have you hours deep into making the call on the faulty part. I think we can read the theory and operation and get the the problem a little quicker. -Enjoy!

Most important tip, lean way back in the seat after installing new part! ;)
Eric, your videos and repairs are always the best. I was on my way past Avoca on I-390 two days ago and decided to roll past SMA even though it happened to be 10PM. If I didn’t live so far away (Pittsburgh PA) I would bring my car to you for everything it would ever need. Thanks for always showing us how you do things, it’s very much appreciated!
I’m in Michigan and I still want to have my car serviced by Eric lol the struggle exists
The old late night drive by creeper! LOL
I live in AZ. I would love to have or find an honest mechanic, troubleshooter like Eric to repair and service my vehicles. Keep these great videos coming Eric. Ps: lived 52 years in Pa. nearSouth Williamsport. ( home of little league base ball).
Same. I actually checked to see the drive time from Pittsburgh lol
You should have honked..... Hey it's that guy!
I can't lie. I instinctively held my phone a little further out when I saw you going for the ignition! Another job well done.
I believe that noise in the dash is a AC blend door actuator stripping its gears looking for a null. (Hunting)
same tipetitap sound as from vw 3c passat dashboard. Some flap motor just try to send morse code 😊
Is there a "sync" operation that corrects that??
Was gonna say my uncle John's Taurus X has a similar thing and of course my journey has a tap-tap-tap-tap-tap noise briefly
Thats what i was thinking. Blend door. Electronic actuator.
@@Garth2011 Activator should be taken off, disassembled, electrical contacts need to be cleaned by 98% isopropyl alcohol. Motor`s front shaft bearing required couple drip of fine synthetic oil. All internal grease should be replaced with Kluber Isoflex grease. Put all stuff back, get it installed on to car. Turn key on to ACC for initial ZERO process... should works better than new.
Even though the system checks twice in 10 seconds to set a code does not mean that is does not continue checking the circuit. That's what I got from what you read to us. good job as always
Bill Burkart makes sense. It checks two more times after powering up and not seeing what it expects, then it sets the SRS light/code and keeps on checking.
I bought a 2005 lesabre as an everyday beater to go to work
Bought it for $800 it had 64000 on when I bought it
It now has 225000 on it and going strong
I'll bet the previous owners had fixed all the problems that came along. That's one good thing about pre-owned vehicles, most of the issues got dealt with by original or previous owners.
g Long
They are great beater cars to get
So can it be considered as a Buick Lebeater ? Where does one draw the line at labelling something as a beater? Is it age, mileage, body panel condition ?
@@stanpatterson5033 A beater is a car you use so that your nice car stays nice, whether it be road grime, human slime, miles, or maintenance.
@David Kaminski ... Thanks Dave. I know what a beater is, I just was wondering how they get the label as a beater. I've had some cars that I considered as a "beater" that some people would think would have never seen winter before. I've also owned a few cars that were my main vehicle, that some folks would assume is a beater while my other car is in the shop or something. I'm just looking to feel out people's opinion of where the line gets drawn to label a car as a beater.
Nice to meet you and Marie today, thanks for the stickers!
I was thinking of you.
On the telly, I'm watching a car auction and the host was saying how rust-free was the car and he speculated that it was from Upstate New York.
I thought of you.
Bought and parked in a garage until taken to the auction MAYBE.
Sounds like a typical used car salesman!
I was just checking out your home repairs with your jeep great looking dogs. In new to the channel I do all my own automotive work at home and really appreciate watching a professional doing diagnostics. Thanks for the information I hope you continue to make and post.
Coffee and a new SMA video. Better and more reliable than a small win lottery scratch-off.
Thanks for the volt meter comment. I have the same issue with my Buick but I haven’t determined if I have been molested by a squirrel or if the sensor is bad. The noise under the dash is probably an hvac actuator trying to get going. I truly enjoy your videos.
Yes is very common for GM and Ford to have blend door issues. Even when they are a couple of years old. Good tech info Eric Keep them coming and THANK YOU !
And Chrysler!!!
Appreciate the comment that we diyers could do this with a simple meter. Your DX process is the best.
comments? we love you! and when your wife is on, the joy we see in your eyes and the playful loving interactions of a healthy relationship!
So I try to watch the entire video (or run it in background) as soon as I can, like, and poke at some comments (for viewer interaction) ... as well as whitelisting your channel to help support it.
We would all be lucky to find a mechanic and diagnostician with even a portion of the honesty and skill as a man such as yourself. You help restore our faith in the business and at time humanity ;)
Great video Mr O. You never cease to amaze!
Good simple diag and repair
That was an easy diagnosis and repair job. The AC blend door is what's making the noise my daughter s impala made the same noise.
Fixed Buick and a smooth ride for ice cream... that's a damn'ed good day!!
Sensor from Naper. Not a sponsor.. Allways makes me smile..👍
so funny that you posted this video today, I just got done replacing the exact same sensor on my Gmc Yukon yesterday
I love those Lesabre videos
Paving the road. Big day in Avoca. ☺

Great video Eric O
New blacktop in Avoca, SMA says less shimmy in the Jimmy when Eric takes it for a shimmy. Whoa!
woooooooooah
"HELLO AND WELCOME BACK TO THE SOUTH MAIN AUTO CHANNEL"
Thanks SMA same thing is going on with my 05 xg350. Greetings from Phelps Ky, Thanks Dr O
Great video Eric, very informative, and easy to follow for all levels of repairers
Was Scotty Kilmer trying to break out of the glovebox?
He couldn't figure his way out, it isn't a 'yota/celica.

My elderly mom in her 2000 something Buick, drove from a stop sign and was turning onto the highway and boom... her car was totaled and the pickup coming down the highway I think was probably totaled. Mom and her friend rode home in the wrecker uninjured thanks to the airbag and seat belts. You never know how important something is until you need it.
I'm glad they were safe. In our neck of the woods, people still turn them off whenever they can and refuse to wear seatbelts, gubmint sumfink, Hillary, sumfink, deep state, my rights!, sumfink.
I figure, if they haven't reproduced yet it's fitting and good they win the Darwin award for their resistance to evil safety.
Local shop did auto body repair, airbag lite was on when I drove it off the lot, service manager did not mention the problem, said he forgot to, and the mechanic was not in for two more days.. Not trusting them, I asked a friend/mechanic to check it out. FIrst thing he asked, “Did it read out any codes at all or was it just lit up?” No codes. Then I discovered this video. I’m taking it in to mechanic tomorrow. Someone I can trust. I will admit that the body shop did great work. Not so sure about their mechanics, however. Also, the tire inflation monitor also lit, not red, no codes.
Good channel. I subscribed a few days ago. Very down to earth and a good variety of repairs and vehicles. 👍
I had a faulty sensor on a nice 03 beetle vert.
Required removing the whole front of the car to replace and a sensor only available from the dealer, £300 for the pair.
You lucky people in the US got a free recall for a known failing part, over here in the UK the dealer would kindly fix it for the bargain price of £600 + taxes.
Thanks VW!
Now my daily is a Honda.
Again mr o comes to the rescue. You da man
Another quality job by SMA
I`m suprised that "NAPA...not our sponsor" is still funny. I`m a viewer since forever and it still makes me laugh. :) Eric O. Is just such a cool guy!
Excellent, just what I needed. 2004 Caravan air bag light driving me crazy!
What codes? Does the steering wheel make clicking noises as you turn it? Does the horn work? Those things are known for clocksprings going bad.
Those things are notorious....
The trucks have a left front and a right front impact sensor... the code will tell you which one, which is nice....
The usual Auto Pep Zone boys will not read an air bag code for you... So for us home gamers, you'll have to get a Bluedriver, or some kind of scanning device, to even see the code.... The Dealer by me wanted $175 just to read the airbag code, estimate of additional $300 to fix it on my truck though, so the $50 for a BlueDriver seemed good... Part was $52 on amazon, for genuine GM front right impact sensor... All fixed. Has one bolt in it. Remove bolt. unplug. plug in new. replace bolt.
I love the video... I'm just throwing this out there. Mr. O is accustomed to having 15 scanners sitting next to his bench... Some of us, do not have that luxury... Home gamers could easily be stuck on "Step one: read the code".... Just so you know...
1 dislike already? Some people are just stuck on stupid. How can you not like Eric and his work?
Make that 2 as I type this, I agree "How can you not like Eric and his work?".
The dope probably wanted to have the first comment and when that wasn’t possible he decided to have the first thumb down...

Jealous. Eric is so obviously brilliant and self-effacing and doggone cute. It's more than some 2inchers can stand.
Eric, another great video. Love it. As far as it keeps on checking, I think it checks 2 times before it puts the light on, but keeps checking after that, you know, just in case you hit a bump and it start working again. *LOL*
Thank you Eric. Good job. Have a blessed and safe week.
Gm recall on a lot of cars. My 2010 Impala was recalled for this.
Ship that old La-Say-Bray right on out! Thanks Dr. O!
kool! Dr. Eric! you da man! I'm ascared of airbags! thank you for enlighting me!
Eric,
Great diag, fix, and video - thank you! Id bet that if you had just cycled the connector on that sensor and then reset/cleared the code the light would have stayed off. Maybe you did try that.
SMA#1
God bless
Paul
That noise in the dash is (remove the whole dash to replace) the HVAC recirculation motor! Been there, done that on several vehicles, including my own 06 Nissan Frontier.
I've seen the wires to the front air bag sensor chewed by (?), so I was expecting to see that. Lucky for you.....bad sensor. Quick diagnose, nice repair!
Mike Chiodetti my xterra has the same thing, just put a little zip tie around the cage where the door moves so it doesn’t fully close, works perfectly.
@@JackS425 Before I replaced it, I put the ignition switch on, then disconnected the two wire plug in. Worked great in the "outside air" only mode until I replaced it.
I love your videos, it confirms every time why I don't need a modern vehicle. I am a radio ham and electronics engineer. So much unnecessary junk on these vehicles. I don't have air bags just a seat belts 4 point of course. This vehicles are just terrible but your work is very impressive you do a fantastic job and it pays the bills. but there is no way I am playing the auto manufacturers game. Hook you in and keep you tight. Ridiculously overcomplicated. Anyway fascinating watching. I need is a simple truck to get me from A to B and job done. I feel so sorry for the people that own these things.

Outstanding quick fix Dr. O. Ok, what troll gave it thumbs down.....jealous ding dong who spent hours trying to complete what Eric did in 11 minutes? lol
There's always an a**wipe around who can't stand that Eric is brilliant and cute.
Stealerships that load up the parts cannon.
Would be interesting to backprobe a good one and see what it's sending back. I think in the service data they were saying it supplies continuous voltage. It said something about "constant communication". And it said it sets the DTC after 2 attempts but I guess it keeps trying to wake the sensor up by reseting power to it.
I only work on my own vehicles but watching you work has completely changed my approach to repairs. I never even considered that it was wrong to just fire the parts cannon, I thought the difference between me and a mechanic is that they were better at guessing what part to throw at it. Even though I'm a complete amateur still, I feel a lot more confident to do my own work knowing that the first step is always to come up with a pinpoint diagnostic plan
The airbag module keeps communicating with the sensor even if the check routine failed. This is because the sensor could (it also may not) still let the airbag module know there's been a crash that needs bag deployment.
As far as your parts cannon goes, many times in the OEM diagnostic routines the flow goes something like this:
1) Check "something"
if it's above "this" repair a circuit
if it's below "that" repair a circuit
2) If circuits are okay replace a part.
3) If not corrected replace another part.
Quick & simple.....well done!
WHAT?? They're paving already??? Geesh ... here in MA, when they start a road project, it's a minimum of a year before anything gets done, most of the time longer! 😡
Good to know the SDM sends that signal out. I didn't know that. The one time I changed front sensors in a '07 Sierra, the problem was obvious - no testing needed. The things were swollen and blown out in several spots, with green crust oozing from each crack! Fantastic engineering, straight from Singapore. GM, hitting 'em outta the park, as usual! 😂
You and the fam-jam have a great Independence Day! I need to go look for fuse for my mini-cannon. 😉
Good approach as usual.
Thanks for the video. 👍
Faith in your abilities is NOT sitting in the passenger seat to test. KABLOOWIE!
Incredible work as always!
The clicking you hear in the dash is the cold/hot actuator (servo) on the HVAC plenum. I've replaced a couple of those in my dad's 2001 Lesabre already. The Dorman replacements are crapola.
Slick and there's nothing better then the smell of fresh asphalt in the morning.
Good job
I would greatly love it if you did more diagnostic videos on airbag systems or could explain shorting bars and easier ways to test them. It's one area that's very grey among many of us. And using an ohm meter in airbag circuitry can go bad very quickly!!!
Great video Eric.
Ive replaced a few of these on GM's they seem to be a common issue on northern cars. The sensor gets corroded at the metal sleeve where the mounting screw is. What's real fun is when that mounting screw breaks off in the rad support. On Chevy trucks you have to remove the radiator and condenser to access the broken carnage. Putting it nicely as Eric says it's a real pisser of a job.
Welcome Son, Welcome to South Main Auto .Sit down , shut up and watch!!
Good diagnosis and fix!
Nice quick fix!
Loving the new thumbnail graphics and text
Oh good, new pavement to get to your shop. It will be a better ride now.
Nice Air Bag diagnosis video, Eric have almost nice tool Snap-on Autel Launch BOSCH.
Smashing job :-D
Lefthanded threads, yep they dont want the average bloke removing it lol.
I really like the olde GM cars that go through circuit check on air bags and turn off light that way you know its happy as soon as problem is fixed
Great work Eric o.....
Once I fired a Canon of parts without fixing anything, incluidng: airbag ignitors, a new airbag, and a new cluster display, a dealer diag, for an 98 audi a4, while I was in college
LOL!! You should have thrown a fire bomb from the get go. Problem solved forever. (Just kidding. I don't like working on most European vehicles.)
Happy 4th of July Eric O an family, although not some thing we celebrate here in Aus hope weather kind to you all an you get enjoy your day an upcoming weekend cheers
Thank you sir !
Good stuff.
Thought you were going to do a bypass with a resistor if that would work in this case..thanks for sharing
Changed a few impact sensors, usually side impact sensors due to water ingress. The difference between a good and bad sensor at key on self-test really shows up on the oscilloscope a good sensors has a very distinctive pattern
Great video, great fix. I was taught to sit on the opposite side for the first key-on after monkeying with any part of the airbag system - i.e. passenger side if fooling with the driver's side airbag. I suppose in this case, you were messing with a central part of the system so there isn't an opposite side to sit on - if Murphy stopped by to ruin your day, both airbags would have fired. It just occurred to me, would it make sense to have doors or windows open, just in case an airbag goes off? I've heard all kinds of things can be damaged by the overpressure, so having a way for that pressure to escape freely might prevent some damage in the unlikely event of an unintended activation.
Pinch punch 1st of the month Eric.
Mate, what is inside the sensor, logic and accelerometers etc? Ever had a look inside a sensor?
love the new header for the vidjeo
My 2005 Buick Lasabre is in the shop right now and the mechanic called me and said the front sensor is bad and it is 200.00 for the part. I'm looking for one online to see if I can get it for less. So far no good. Guesss I;m out 200 bucks! Thank you.
Why are they paving the road with a Shop Vac? ;). Excellent as always, Mr. O.
government contracts, they have to milk it; they take forever, do a crappy enough job so it has to be redone in a decade, give or take. Also, you have to have 3 people standing around watching for every one person doing work ... for safety!
but, shop vac would also make it go pretty slow. Seems like they've been paving that small section of road for 3+ months lol
I really like how you got the ability to "enhance" screens...you must have the magic touch there guy!

Another good one.
I was wondering what voltages you were expecting to see; 5, 8, 9 or system? And now I know! Also thx for the heads up on the left hand thread bolt.
Most of the airbag sensors I've come across have been left thread. The reasoning is they wont be pulled by idiots on accident.
Heh "tap tap tap tap" Sounds like Broadsword was trying to contact Danny Boy 😋
The clicking in the dash is most likely the blend door stripped gear. Have the same problem on our 98' Park Ave.
Also Great Job!
LeSabre, French for Sofa Car! I called my old 1987 a LeSofa which was accurate.
I used to have a 2004 Shivvy Venture that sometimes made that same dash noise.
Nice job. Realize it was about the air bag sensor, but you went right by the strange noise behind the dash. Maybe you and the owner could find out what exactly is going on.
The Buick's dash is sending a Morse Code message...
Could the repeating of the signal more than the 2 times just be it's ordinary mode without the defective part on it? Would be interesting to see the signal with both sensors in turn installed. That left hand thread is good info for sure. Thanks Eric!
