So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. On previous episodes we have covered Sara by Fleetwood, Reelin’ In the Year by Steely Dan, and Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty.
Today, we’re going back to the 70s with it’s one of the rock era’s premiere singer-songwriters, Jackson Browne. And we’re getting into the story behind his signature song Running on Empty.: Clyde Jackson Browne was born in Heidelberg, Germany in 1948, but was raised in Los Angeles from the age three. Growing up, Browne was interested in folk music and began writing songs at the urging of a couple high friends. In February 1966, Jackson joined the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band… He was barely 18 years old! That was nothing. He wrote the very mature classic song These Days when he just 16 years old. A song dealing with loss and regret. So he was definitely and old soul. Jackson wound up leaving the nitty gritty dirt band within six months, thought Some of his early compositions appeared on their subsequent albums.
An ensuing contract with Nina Music, a subsidiary of Elektra Records, resulted in Jackson writing for artists like Tom Rush, Johnny Rivers and ex-Velvet Underground singer Nico, with whom he was romantically involved. Nico actually recored the aforementioned classic song These Days. Although when Jackson wrote it it was called I’ve Been out Walking. He played guitar on the track and with Nico’s melancholy voice singing those world weary lyrics. - Розваги

When I was 13 in 1972, I was in Disneyland, to my surprise (for free) five feet away from me the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band rose from an underground stage and began playing. As a sixth grader, I thought I was in heaven! What a story I had to share when I returned to my hometown in New England. It was a lifetime thrill!! ❤
Jackson Browne has always been something of a sleeper; an unassuming genius whose impact was felt more than praised by the masses. He is so great, just rarely is he commonly lauded.

For me, Late for the Sky is one of the best albums ever. Fountain of Sorrow and For a Dancer are breathtakingly beautiful.

When I was young, ‘Doctor, My Eyes’ was a great song that didn’t have much meaning but was a catchy tune. 36 years into my Firefighting/Emergency Services career, it has become the PTSD Anthem for me. Such a great song!

"Late for the Sky" is one of my favorite albums of all time. I get pissed when "The Load Out" and "Stay" get split as separate songs. They're meant to be played together.

My brother is a longtime JB superfan, he has seen him many times in concert. He happened to run into him at the baggage claim area in an airport and decided to approach him. JB took selfies with him and couldn't have been nicer. This was a couple of years ago. What luck, and a great memory for my brother.

I’m a child of the 70s and Jackson B is one of my all time faves. All of the albums up to and including Running on Empty are outstanding. There was a drop off after that IMHO, but he’s still one of the best singer songwriters ever.
Totally agree Those first five albums were truly outstanding if not profound.. His work after that into the 1980's and beyond was quite patchy. There are perhaps a dozen songs from the later albums that would collectively make another solid album.

It's amazing that he wrote for other artists, considering how superlative an artist/performer he is.
I was a huge Jackson Brown fan as a teen when these albums came out, although none of my friends got it. 40 years later, those songs still speak to my soul. I was lucky enough to see him in concert in the 80s and it felt like an intimate club performance even though it was a fairly large performing arts venue for the time.
Doctor My Eyes and Take It Easy are some of what I consider traveling songs. When I was a kid, every summer my family and I would travel from east Texas to Arizona in a VW van. It only had an AM radio and we had to listen to whatever station my parents could pick up. It was a succession of the same kind of songs and those were often played. Whenever I hear them, it brings up memories of open, desert vistas and the taste of water from the big jug my parents had for years, and the excitement of seeing my cousins again😊

As an audience member, where Jackson never failed was that even in a song like "Cocaine" he brings in that moment where he is going to make it real. "I was talking to my doctor down at the hospital He said, "Son, it says here you're twenty-seven, But that's impossible Cocaine you look like you could be forty-five" I loved lines like that. As a young person, he didn't glorify things like Cocaine to his young audience. When I was in college, there were gatherings that had it freely available and I already understood that I didn't even need to try it.
Jackson is and always has been my favorite artist since i was a teen, 50 years. I saw him in 1978 during the Running on Empty tour, Rosie and David were in the band. It was so good, unforgettable to this day. Every song was just perfect.
It’s difficult to convey the impact of Jackson’s effect in so many of my generation (I’m about to turn 70). I just shared Running On Empty with my 17 yo grandson. He loved it. There is hope for the younger generation 😉
And I slipped the CD into my son's corrola before a major road trip.

I've been listening to Jackson Browne since his beginning... he was prolific even as a youngster..Rock Me On The Water.. Doctor My Eyes..These Days...The Pretender...
My all-time favorite is the pretender. It speaks of the struggles of everyday people just trying to get through life. I've been a big fan of his for a long time.
I saw Jackson Browne play twice during the "Running on Empty" Tour. Once at Tanglewood and the second time at what used to be "The Boston Garden." I feel so honored to have been able to attend both of these shows. He just totally Rocked my world!!!
I was so lucky to be a teen in the 1970s the music was amazing. My husband is the same age as Jackson Browne but isn’t that much into Rock. He was so surprised to find out that I was. I’ve said to him time and again how could I not be ? I was a teen during all the great bands! Now we live in his hometown of Southwest Detroit Michigan where Motown was born. 🙂🌈🐈🐈⬛💖
Jackson was instrumental in the music of the Eagles. If you listen to the Glenn Frey interview, Jackson basically showed them how to write songs. Thank you Jackson for your music and being a great teacher!
So much happened in Laurel Canyon. The History of the Eagles was so great. I forget the exact name but there is another great documentary series on Laurel Canyon where Frank Zappa lived and eventually a ton of other musicians too.
Yeah but listen to Jacksons early albums and you know he was influenced big time by Van Morrison, so was Springsteen a couple years later on his first two albums.

I'm 37. My parents are 68. Jackson Brown is their all time favorite so I grew up on his stuff. Now I play it for my kids and they love it to.

😅Met my husband at a Jackson Brown concert. It was an outdoor event and basically my ticket was "on the hill" behind the limited seats at the bottom of the venue (outside Cleveland, Ohio.) I was a law student and lots of us had tickets and ended up car pooling. My ride was with my future husband and his roommate and we ended up sitting on the same blanket on the hill as well. I have often wondered what my life might have been like if I had gotten into a different car or not been at the concert. The concert was great and I know open air venues have their challenges, but they also have great benefits. There is something very special about setting outside with a sea of stars above, listening to wonderful music and making friends who end up changing your life forever.
Growing up, I had a cousin working in a record store so the only thing I bought were albums and my favorite artist was Jackson. I knew every word to every one of his songs but only recently started connecting the song to the title. This is still true for many of the songs during this time in my life.
I love Jackson Browne! He’s one musician I keep returning to again and again as I get older. His songs fill my soul with something necessary

I was at Merriweather Post when JB played Running on Empty. He ended his performance with the Load Out and it absolutely rocked the house. I've seen so many live performances in my life but that JB concert in '77 is still my favorite.
Wish I'd been there but I'd have been like eight years old lol I did see David Gilmour though at Merryweather Post Pavillion back in '84, front row center seat. No barrier between audience and stage...it was amazing. I miss seeing shows there because the venue itself was up close and personal.
"That Girl Could Sing" still gives me goosebumps.

A couple years ago I googled the profoundly beautiful lyrics to For a Dancer. That was when I learned how young Jackson was when he wrote so many of his songs. I believe that his soul is not merely old, his soul must be prehistoric!
I grew up hearing Jackson Browne on the radio but wasn’t until the last year that I started delving into his albums. At 57 I say better late than never. He writes some beautiful lyrics and melodies.
I LOVE the song he did with Clarence Clemons "You're a Friend of Mine." Also love "Somebody's Baby. "

I have loved Jackson Browne for a long time. He is so talented.
Cat Stephens wrote all the songs on his first album at age 16. "Here Comes My Baby," "The First Cut Is The Deepest," "Matthew & Son," etc.
Also - Kenny Loggins wrote ”Danny's Song" while he was still in high-school.

"The Load-Out/Stay" is probably my favorite Jackson Browne song. I first heard it back when I was a kid and even though I didn't completely understand the song at the time, I felt the emotion of the song. Just great songwriting and musicianship.
And the original singer did the high part.

David Lindley is a marvelous example of how a great session player or side man can contribute to a major stars success and in this case helped Jackson Browne become the star that he is today and David's contributions were excellent

PLEASE interview Nick Lowe! He's still with us, and the guy has great stories and is funny AF. He was instrumental as a producer and songwriter in the 80s, but those who covered his songs often became more famous than him.
He was Johnny Cash's son in law at one time, and wrote songs for Cash. "The Beast In Me" is one of Johnny's finest works late in his career.
One of the most underrated session musicians. May he rest in heavenly peace.

THIS was the song and album that catapulted me into being a HUGE LIFELONG FAN of his!!!!! My brother and his gf gave me this album for my 13th birthday the year it came out and I thought it was the BEST present EVER back then. 😎 No matter how my musical tastes changed over the years, I’ll always love listening to anything he puts out. Just an incredibly brilliant songwriter and musician!!!

"Take It Easy" was the first rock song I learned to play on my guitar!
Gregg Allman and Jackson were very close, dating back to when they were roommates in L.A. in the late 60s. Gregg recorded a beautiful poignant version of "These Days" for his solo album Laid Back. Late last year Gregg's son Devon recorded the song with Maggie Rose as a tribute to Gregg. I highly recommend it! Gregg also recorded Jackson's song "A Song for Adam" on his last solo record Southern Blood. There is a very emotional story about the recording of that song. Clearly Gregg Allman, a brilliant songwriter in his own right, had a deep admiration and respect for Jackson not only as a songwriter and musician but also as a friend ❤
One of my very favorite artists! I was so happy when you revealed the artist! He told the story of "Doctor My Eyes" that the idea occurred when a broken piano key bounced and created the iconic rhythm. Brilliant songwriter. And, YES PLEASE, cover my favorite JB song, "The Pretender"!
Living in South African during apartheid, we never got to hear many of the great musicians. But in 1979, as a 19 year old I housesat for an elder person and found "Running on empty " in her record collection. I was blown away by the lyrics and sound and became a lifetime Jackson follower instantly. His release of "A little to soon to say" during Covid, shows his kept his excellece for over 5 decades.😂

I'm so glad you brought Jackson up! He's my favorite songwriter and I think he is criminally underrated these days. He didn't get those monster hits like Queen and other acts at that time, but he sure kept producing great material. My favorite Jackson era is the 80's. Hold out, Lawyers in love and Lives in the balance is such a great triple run!
Lawyers in Love is definately criminally underrated! It captured the zeitgeist of the 80's humourously- which I suspect is why it is so underrated. No one expected such a wicked sense of humor from him.

Jackson Browne has been the soundtrack of a good part of my late teens. When I was 4,000 miles away from home, lonely with others lonely guys in the Army. I'm still haunted by thoughts of being "The Pretender " am I, or am not, if I am is that bad or good, for 45 years.

Been waiting for this for ages! such a prolific songwriter at such a tender age and he's been consistently brilliant through the years. saw an interview with the late great Glenn Frey of the Eagles and he was telling about the early days when he was living in a tiny apartment above Jackson Browne, And glenn helped him finish up "Take it easy".
what a time to be in southern California in the early 70s where all The creative geniuses were creating the sounds for the next several years.
These Days is one of my all time favorites. To have composed that at 16 is borderline unbelievable.

One of Jackson Browne‘s acclaimed early albums is among the notable recordings that have been added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.
Browne’s third studio effort, 1974’s Late for the Sky, was one of 25 new additions to the registry. Late for the Sky reached #14 on the Billboard 200 and while it featured no hit singles, it included such enduring songs as “Fountain of Sorrow,” “For a Dancer” and “Before the Deluge.” It went on to be RIAA certified Platinum for sales of over a million copies in the U.S.
Each year, 25 recordings are selected for inclusion in the National Recording Registry that are at least 10 years old and that are judged to be “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
Fountain of Sorrow is one of the best ever written in my view. He is brilliant!

JB's lyrics are almost always thought provoking, and will often move you to tears. His music has been truly important in my life.
This is just one of those songs that as soon as you hear the energetic intro you know you're going to love it. That and marking the years of his life, "In '65 I was Seventeen..." "In '69 I was twenty-one..." It reminds me of the struggles of a young man and it spoke to me, more so when I was older, looking back with a bit more understanding.

My brother was in the audience when Running On Empty was recorded. Sadly, I had not really been all that familiar with Jackson Brown at the time and opted not to go. Never have corrected that mistake.
I saw the ROE concert at Festival Hall in Brisbane in the 70s, supported by Maria Muldaur, a fantastic double bill. The album was played to death in our shared household afterwards. But like others I think his masterpiece was Late For The Sky, favourite track Before The Deluge.
I knew it had to be Clyde J. I’m so looking forward to seeing him (from the 6th row) in N. O. this coming Saturday. He is so woven into the fabric of our lives. For me, it’s been over 40 years. His talent has truly been a national treasure.

I have always been a Jackson Browne fan but hands down The Pretender is my all time favorite, so touching and real.
He is one of my very favorites! A couple of years ago driving thru New Mexico and listened to Standing in the Breach album and it was like a spiritual experience with the desert mountains and the big fluffy clouds, like a scene from Thelma and Louise. So perfect! Running on Empty would have been a great choice for that ride too! Sky Blue and Black from I'm Alive is a very powerful song too. Another great "break up" song he did was Cut it Away from Lawyers in Love. Jackson IS such a GREAT talent!
David Lindley's lap steel playing on the album help send it over the top sonically. I'd add Rosemary Butler's singing to that comment too. Thanks for featuring JB, who along with Nick Drake are my favorite singer/songwriters.

I always thought that "Rock Me On The Water" didn't get the praise it deserved.
I’m less a music fan and more of a car radio person, but I get so sucked into your podcast because of your amazingly sincere and passionate presentation that I can’t help but listen. When you start life giving “2 1/2 minute talks” it’s basically a given that you will become a natural teacher.
Another album that made 1978 so magical. When I think back to my youth, 1978 always stands out as my favorite year for album rock. Love, Running on Empty, but the Load Out/Stay, will always be my favorite song on the album...we've got Richard Pryor on the video.
Jackson Browne's music is so very introspective: These days, Late for the Sky, Fountain of Sorrow with the lyric "I was taken by a photograph of you". and Before the Deluge. The imagery of his lyrics still brings back memories uniquely my own.
Running on Empty is great road trip soundtrack . He really reads life and people’s deeper needs. Food for thought .

It was the gorgeous euphoria I felt listening to "Lawyers In Love" (the song) that hooked me on Jackson from then on. Ooo, Shalala in harmony, and that soaring vocalise was pure magic for this old pop music freako. It still lifts me off the planet.

"The Load Out/Stay" is an absolute fantastic duo with tempo and chord changes that give it a great feel and lyrics that really describe life on the road. "Running on Empty" lyrically is a masterpiece that shows how life can get too complicated and aimless. Simply superb.
Timeless song. Browne was a wonderful composer, his songs really touched you. What a great idea for a live album. I once had a job as a roadie...going to have to go back and listen to "Load Out". This song needs a week at #1 for sure. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁

@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Our summer exhibition would have concerts at our football stadium and that summer David Bowie was coming to town for his "Glass Spider" Tour back in the 80's. My best friend used to work for a company that rented out speaker equipment for gigs of any size and they were asked to hire some locals to help the regular roadies who travelled from city to city and I volunteered along with my buddies, my brother and even my brother in law. Anyways we set up the smaller stage which was used by Tina Turner, Beatlemania, Whitney Houston and a few others. Then we tore that stage down and built Bowie's stage which was much bigger in the endzone. We got offered to build a similar stage for Pink Floyd a month later but I was back at University so I passed and I still regret it. What an experience. Very long days and it was super hot that summer.

This was a great segment. I have loved Jackson Brown for decades. Saw him back in the 70’s when The Pretender came out. I listened to that album and eight track over and over it truly is one of my favorites. Loved Only Child made my two sons really listen to it and understand it. Saw Jackson when I was on a trip to Utah in 2022. He sang under the stars on a perfect night and brought back wonderful teenage memories for my wife and I. His poetry is engraved in the book of my life and I am grateful for the way it spoke to me.

Writing hit songs as a teenager is unbelievable. At that age, I was struggling to write short essays for school. And probably spending more time composing DIRTY limericks! That's why Jackson Browne had such a successful music career. And the closest I came was singing along from my church pew on Sundays.

....HELL, I was KNOWN for my 'dirty limericks'....I still write 'em, at SIXTY-TWO!! ...ha-HAAA!!
I was writing instrumentals at age 12. I had one song for every month of the year. I wrote my first lyric at age 18. Still, my songs were way too "high school" to be taken seriously. Some people can write like an adult at an early age. I had to grow into my craft.

I wrote a bunch of essays this past school year and most of them were just okay. Imagine if Jackson Browne were to be put in an AP English class.

I bet you could do a video of less than 10 seconds of what Leland Sklar has not done! It amazes me to see the variety of music he has been a part of. Truly amazing.

My cousin Charlie wrote articles for an alternative newspaper in Santa Rosa CA. We were talking about the wrecking crew a few months back, pretty soon Charley sent me the actual article documenting the interview he did with Hal Blaine. He got to talk with Hal Blaine!
Adam, you really have a gift but you're also receiving fantastic gifts by getting to experience these magical beings, hear their stories, share them with us. I should probably be supporting your endeavors as we all should. Your work, chronicling the most important period in music history, will last for generations. Don't sell yourself short. The work you're doing is very important.

Two other great songs I can think of by him are "Lives in the Balance" which was used in "Miami Vice."
Also as a kid, I loved (and still do) "That girl could sing," which was such an unique tune with its halting rhythm through the song.

Very good song for that MV episode! MV was my favorite show in high school and my late wife bought me the COMPLETE DVD box set for Christmas a few years ago. 😊

I got to see JB twice back in the 80s, one concert was at Six Flags and it rained all day, so lots of people left before the concert, which was great for us. My boyfriend and I were able to get very close to the stage. My boyfriend was lead guitar in a local band, and I had made us matching shirts out of some crazy eye-scorching psychedelic fabric that kind of stood out in a crowd.
Jackson did his song, "For A Rocker", and when he got to the line,
"I've got a shirt so unbelievably bright
I'm gonna dig it out and wear it tonight
For a rocker!"
He emphatically pointed at my boyfriend and people around us laughed! I was thrilled, even though he didn't point at me, wearing the same damn shirt, that I MADE, but that's okay.😃

I was 18 when "Running On Empty" was released, newly married my wife and I nearly wore out the cassette that first year, every time we were in the car it was playing. Today at 63 I can still sing every word. Great memories!

Jackson Browne is easily one of my favourite artists, by far and away. I would love to see you do more in-depth videos on him, including his songs “Something Fine” (which I heard Karla Bonoff nail a cover of live), “For America”, and “Lives In The Balance”!
I am feeling almost overwhelmed looking at my old album covers and listening to songs that I used to listen to every day but I haven't heard in years and I know they stand the test of time. He really spoke to me as an artist. The themes of wanting something real and not wanting to be a pretender and wanting to have a deeper connection with people when you know the bus is going to take you down the road to the next place all too soon. The Pretender might be one of my favorite songs by him. But Running on Empty whole album is my favorite "experience" with him. By the time you get to Load out and Stay, those are the songs that pierce my heart as if one of our favorite artists wants us to have a real moment with him and every time I hear it, I do.
JB in my eyes is THE greatest singer songwriter ever. Nobody can touch him at what he does best. He exists on a different level and David Lindley elevated his music literally to the heavens
Running On Empty is one of the first songs I remember hearing and is one of my all time favorite songs.

Next to the Eagles, Jackson Browne was my favorite musician of the early 70's. And it was close. I probably spent a lot more time analyzing and meditating on Browne's songs than the Eagles, but there was something about the Eagles that kept me fascinated for about 8 years or so. They were both very important to me.
Nothing like getting a head start in the songwriting department haha. Just goes to show that music van come at any point, so long as you find the inspiration.
