I feel a lot of tightness in my throat and a lot of pressure on the top of my head. You know that feeling you get when you’re hanging upside down for a while and your head starts feeling funny, I get the same feeling after I take sumatriptan. I would say about 20 minutes after. I also feel some stiffness on my jaw, ears, neck. It does help relief my migraines but I don’t like the side effects so I try not to take it too much.

I have taken sumatriptan for about 15 years. I usually took the maximum amount per month of about 9 times. Initially I took 100 mg and now use 50. It has been the only thing I found that worked to stop the migraines. In the meantime if all of this I have been trying to figure out why mats causing them but haven’t been able to yet, mainly due to lack of money and various test I could use to figure it out. Medical doctors do t even try to figure it out. They just use drugs to treat the symptoms. Anytime this medication has really been a godsend. Because without it I wouldn’t have been able to work. At one time I was having about 15 migraines per month. So some months I would use it more than the 9 times. But I would try other methods like extra caffeine etc. so I did t have to take so much. Some of he side effects I would notice were my speech was slowed but only my daughter really noticed it. Also the main thing I would notice is when I took a shower the water hitting my skin made my skin feel burned. As if I had a sunburn and hot water on it was slightly uncomfortable. But recently I started having visual problems. The curtain effect which is scary. A dark spot in my vision on one eye that lasted about 15 minutes. It has happened three times now. I don’t know for sure if it’s from all the sumatriptan but I suspect it is. So I’m concerned it has damaged the blood vessels in my eyes. I have been hoping to not have to take it now for years but again, nothing else I have tried works.

I worry if i take it to much it will stop working. Have you experienced this over the 15 years? I take a half a 100mg pill at a time 10-15 times per month. It works great for my migraines. I relate to the hot water. Washing my hands and showering i can tell if the sumatriptan in on board yet after taking one because of this sensation. I hope to be able to find a preventative option as well.

I have taken imitrex for years. The first time I took it was when it first came out and I took it in the form of an injection. I felt like it went straight to my brain. I felt very flushed, red-faced and had to lay down. I was a little nauseous but not bad. Those feelings wore off within an hour and my migraine went away. So since I have debilitating migraines often, I took another injection weeks later, this time with the self injector that came out. No bad reactions at all and quick relief of my migraine.
Since then I now take the 100mg caplet and although it seems to take forever to take effect, it works fine. It does make me very sluggish and sleepy. Most of the time I only take half and if I can catch it in time it works but if I let it get bad I have to take the full 100mg. I don’t leave home without them.

I was recently prescribed this due to frequent, debilitating migraines. I took my first dose last night and let me tell you it works, but I had some rather interesting side effects. First off, I had bizarre dreams the entire night. Once it hit my brain the Sumatriptan was like “you wanna see some shit?” I got up to pee and my legs felt like they weighed a million pounds, then I could barely stay awake long enough to use the toilet. I felt like I was in that realm of sleep and awake. Today my head feels okay but I’m groggy.

Took it today for the first time for migrane. Throat was dry, uncomfortable pressure in my head and eyes were still there. I fell asleep for about 8 hours about an hour and a half after taking it, and I woke up & for the first time in a second the light hadn't hurt my eyes. 🎉

Nice, thanks! I just received Sumatriptan Injections USP. I get terrible Migraines every day and the medicines I took earlier; I gained a lot of weight. My Cardiologist had advised me that I should not take any medicine that would enlarge my QTC and after watching this video, I am not sure if I should use these injections. Maybe I will call my Neurologist on Monday. He said previously that it won't but I am just scared. Thank you for educating us.

Just took it for the first time last Thursday night, headache cleared very quickly. Secondly, throat was very dry and tight, never felt my throat be tight like that. Had an odd dream, woke up at 4:30-5am, couldn’t go back to sleep. Thinking felt, “numb”, almost like buzzed on alcohol. Extremely tired all day, and fell asleep about 4 hours early the next day. Fatigue seemed normal for the shortened sleep. One more odd side effect, I tried drinking and eating sweets, and it physically pained my entire teeth. Two days later and i could eat sweets again. So I’ll probably use this stuff in emergencies only.

I took Sumatriptan for the first time today since being prescribed.
One, thank you for posting this and creating a space for others who battle migraines and headaches to find relief in knowing that others share this experience.
Second, it’s funny you said 3-5% for most side effects. I came here after the injection and immediately thought “wow I’m that 3-5% for all these things” lol
I was so shocked I immediately had migraine relief but at the same experiences these side effects. It was scary to think I was having other problems right after taking the medicine.
I had a lot of tightness in the back of my head and throat, and the pins and needles effect specially around my nose. This was such a weird feeling, currently riding it out now as I type. I’m already feeling it dissipate as time goes by.
    Thanks again.

took it for the first time about 10 hours ago, and not good. Only took a 6.25 dose, a pill cut in a quarter, not good. I very mush suspect i have heart or liver troubles, unknown. So glad i didnt take the full pill. Hard to tell what was the migraine and what was the pill effects, but not good. My blood pressure got to 194 over 113, 94 beats. hands and arms felt very weird. Didnt know if i should call for help or not. Spaced out, very worried. Slept it off. hard to describe it all. For migraines, i wear green tinted glasses from amazo, and take magnesium and when one hits, i lay down in the dark with ice on the back of my neck. Those green glasses do work, but you have to wear them like your life depends on it.

That's what my scalp felt like. I guess it fit into the "pins & needles" side effect. As weird as it is, I always welcome that feeling, because I know it's working, and relief will be here in 30 to 90 min.

Lost my primary care doctor, went to urgent care cause I had a migraine and it was day 3, I went in and had explained how so far the only 3 things that have been able to stop my migraines was weed, codeine tablets, or caffeine tablets (but I can't handle too much caffeine as it messes with my heart) and how it was exactly the same for my mother. The physician ignored my complaints assuming I was just some drug addict or webmd user, and prescribed me Sumatriptan and refused to offer any other solution when I disagreed. Desperate for any chance of getting rid of the pain I took the pill and because it was so late in the day I couldn't pick-up my prescription so I only had the one tablet, after about an hour of waiting still in pain, it felt dulled, then I started getting dizzy, started losing motor functions, senses started dulling, and my heart rate started to peak, I wasn't able to actually count a bpm cause my thoughts were so clouded and my ability to feel the beat of my heart was multiplied and distorted, yet my phone was spitting out 140bpm while laying down, and my chest felt like it was seizing up like I was gonna have a heart attack when I was standing up. After recovering the next day, I talked with my mother about it (she was a pharmacist tech, and later worked in a drug lab synthesizing and creating new drugs professionally so she knew a lot) and it turns out Sumatriptan doesn't work on her at all.

I just took this after deciding my migraine was getting bad enough to warrant it. It does work rapidly, but I’ll only take it if I get desperate because I also get tightness in my throat and jaw, my throat kind of burns at the moment from it as well. And my limbs feel warm and heavy, but since the pain has kept me from being able to sleep I don’t mind it as the tired body helps me knock out and catch up on sleep I’ve missed from the pain. I don’t love the feeling of my body feeling like it’s not mine when taking this, I get a little bit of a dissociated feeling, but if the pain is bad enough I’ll deal with all of this over migraine pain ANY day. Just know the possible side effects and monitor your changes when taking it so you can go to the ER if anything gets weird!

@@AskCurtis I'm a 70 year old female with migraines since childhood, more severe and more frequent since late 1980s. I was prescribed Imitrex in early 2000s and found it to be a miracle. As time went on, I noticed that I would get migraines more often the day after taking one 100 mg tablet. I try every possible solution before taking one, but often it's the only thing that stops the nauseating pounding pain, hot knife in right eye, and light/sound sensitivity.
Last year I was formerly diagnosed with "idiopathic small fiber peripheral polyneuropathy" for worsening symptoms I've had for many years.
Prior to this time, I had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 1991, which seems to have progressed to SFPN following cold turkey benzo withdrawal (taken as directed, but for almost 29 years). I'm 44 months out from last dose.
It seems that when a migraine starts and the other burning, itching, zapping nerve pain kicks in, taking one 100 mg sumatriptan helps the migraine AND the neuropathy symptoms too.
I googled "why does sumatriptan help neuropathy symptoms" and it revealed info I hadn't known before about sumatriptan and neuropathy.
I will NOT increase use of sumatriptan for relief of neuropathy, as I'm aware of the dangers of too frequent sumatriptan use. However, I'm surprised I hadn't heard of this sooner as I research extensively (I'm autistic).
Is it conceivable that I could reduce the sumatriptan 100 mg to a 50 mg tablet? Would 50 mg stop the migraine?
My goal is to take no Rx meds or at least the lowest effective dose.
My only other Rx med is gabapentin 300 to 900 mg qd.
      Thank you.

I take sumatriptan a about 4-8 times per month I feel it works very good, usually 80-99% decrease in pain. and has little side effects. I think it makes me a bit low energy tho, when I take it I want to go get active since the pain is gone, but then I also feel a bit drowzy so I usually stay inside.
I find cannabis works the same way tho, and does not make me low energy, and it works way faster. So I feel like that is a better medicine as I feel i can be active after.

Saved my life. Pretty sure brain damage occurs when no intervention is available. Now I’m being told no longer auto injections available;(

@@AskCurtis, is there a reason that so many meds are unavailable right now? I usually get the Dr reddy (I think that’s the name) brand of imitrex but now can only get north star. My pharmacist said the other wasn’t available right now and the same way for other meds. I always pick mine up at the drive through so haven’t asked anyone about it yet.

Anybody gets memory deficits when taken more frequently than should or is it just me? I have yet to see an official side affect like mine on any site :/ It does the job well but I take more than 1 every week then it starts to catch on me, I get forgetful easily & start to clutter. Apparently I walked into my pharmacy today after picking up my medication a couple days ago, no recollection

Hey Maria - sumatriptan can can CNS side effects but I haven't heard of it causing memory issues. But I tell people all the time you just never know how you are going to respond to any given medication. So it is possible ...

I get migraines due to taking Suboxone. I take sumatriptan to help with that. For me it works very well and I also have not experienced any of these side affects mentioned in the video.

I also take suboxone, but it doesn't trigger migraines for me. My triggers are sleeping in late or missing a dose of caffeine (coffee/soda)

took it 2 hours ago for starting migraine. Had “pins and needles” feeling then felt asleep. I know the pressure and pain from migraine is still there but very very far. But comparing to what I would have if no pill - that’s a huge relief

I struggled with sumatriptan. I either took it too late or not enough and I would feel nauseous as well. I tried even though I wasn’t totally happy having pharma to support me.
Since having exogenous ketones twice daily I have not had regular headaches and semi-regular migraines. It’s been over two years now. Last week however I did have a headache that lasted 3 days and it reminded me of how shit I used to feel in a daily basis. I would go to the gym and to work with them and I really do not know how I functioned, probably not optimally. Ketones are a game changer for me. 🙏

That's great feedback Ann-Marie. Thank you. And yes, lifestyle and diet plays a huge role in migraine frequency and intensity.
