- Let's go over the Europa League Final between Atalanta Bergamo Calcio and Bayer Leverkusen and break down the tactics of Xabi Alonso and Gianpiero Gasperini, Ademola Lookman's brilliant performance, and the overall team effort that got Atalanta an unlikely victory in this cup final.

Leverkusen didn't see us coming, overconfident choices by everyone including Xabi, they're still an incredible team ofc but they thought they could treat us like Roma, big mistake
I have to agree. I knew Atalanta would have a solid chance, but I didn't expect them to neuter Leverkusen the way they did. Gasperini finally got the cup he deserved in my opinion.
@@campfirefootball
As a leverkusen fan i already knew that we will lose when ive seen the starting XI.
To start Adli over Schick or Boniface is stupid..
Also they seemed tired and not really willing to win it
Roma that made them anyway shit their pants after been up 2-0 in their home stadium, and getting back on top only after striking up an own goal.. all in all already a sign of lack of mentality in that game considering that Roma was at that moment a team that played every 3 days for the previous 3 weeks and with a short usable bench..
Other than that only people actually ignorant of Italian football could have thought about this game more than 60-40 for Leverkusen as favourite, Atalanta kicked Liverpool ass and already beated in Europa League Leverkusen in 2022 (and Roma did in 2023) the only doubt would have been if mentally they could hold up the pressure of a big game they did and the difference between the two is exactly what the score shown 3-0.
@@asganawaynah, they had an xg under 1 for good reason, lookman just had great finishing, wasn’t Atlanta being that much better tactically
Gasperini tactical masterclass... amazing
Congratulations Atalanta
Amen to that.
My plan was to watch just the first 5 mins. But I ended up watching the full video. Props to you. I really enjoyed it.
Awesome and thank you. I'm glad you stuck around.
I don't know why people keep saying I didn't see this coming. Well I did see this coming they have been estatic form in the Serie A and the Europa League prior to this. When they play like this in the League or Europe they can beat any team matched up against them and they generally don't do it by 1 goal either.
I certainly didn't see 3-0 coming. But before the match I heard so many people saying Leverkusen were heavy favorites and certain winners, which I thought was over the top. People also just forgot about Atalanta because of the run Leverkusen have been on this season. Atalanta were always going to be dangerous but the 3-0 scoreline was a surprise to me.
To be honest I knew Atalanta would win. I just didn’t expect 3:0
best breakdown i've seen and the way you do it on here i've not seen others do. Perfect job. I'd like to see more.
Thank you very much. There are definitely more to come.
this is a great breakdown!! I am glad I was watching it the same as you. Looking forward to the Champions League Final Breakdown! Atalanta deserved it! They came to play! Not only the players but Gasperini dialed up a great strategy. Lookman is historical!! His one-on-one skills are special! reminded me so much of AFCON.
I didn't plan to watch this all through, but little did I know that I lost the bet the moment I clicked the video. Nice one bro 👍
Well I'm glad you stuck around.
I cannot believe this type of content is free, amazing analysis and great explanation
Much appreciated!
@@campfirefootball Do you get copyrighted? If no, how do you avoid it?
@@omardotbio I frequently do and have to make edits to the video. Then I have to upload it again. By pausing the video consistently, I suppose I am altering the original content enough. It's not an exact science though.
man marking leverkusen was the tactics atlanta deployed againt liverpool
Yes indeed. But I thought they were even better defensively against Leverkusen than they were at Anfield. They also created a ton of chances against Liverpool.
All creds to Atalanta for their direct, aggressive and brave way of playing. This was their night. They were the hungrier team. Watching Leverkusen this incredible season, they were not that impressive in this competition, including Quarabag, West Ham and Rome. Atalanta had the mental upper cut after Liverpool got trashed. This was their year. Leverkusen still has something to improve which is good for them. Pokal against Kaiserslautern today will not be as easy as many think either.
It's interesting to look at their European run and that they didn't play very many good teams. Once they were in the knockout round, they were almost eliminated a few times but showed great character to advance. But their luck ran out in the final. Either way, huge achievement for them to win the domestic double. Great season for Leverkusen despite not winning all 3 titles.
Great breakdown, enjoyed watching
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great analysis, thanks! Atalanta's pressing tactics are gutsy and of course they also have the physicality and discipline to execute it to perfection, but this should not come as a surprise. Atalanta play like this for years now. Yet Bayer showed no serious ideas on the ball and created almost nothing. It's like they weren't prepared at all for what was coming for them.
Thank you! Atalanta have been doing this system for a long time, so I'm sure Xabi Alonso knew what was coming. Perhaps he felt he had a perfect counter tactic, but it definitely didn't work.
Nice analysis, you deserve more subs!!
Much appreciated. I'm working on it!
Well try to change your accent. When people hear American accent it’s a massive turn off. 😂
@@Peggyg13 🤣😂🤣 I once had a guy say EXACTLY that. He said he wished the video had not been done by an American because he can't take the accent seriously.
@@campfirefootball 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@campfirefootball Another thing, it’s like you are over compensating. All those jersey’s in the background doesn’t help. Get rid of them. If you have a particular club or league you support you should focus on that more. Don’t be a jack of all trade. Football fans value loyalty. Then you pause your video’s a lot. Use graphics & analytics instead. People wanna hear what you think without the distraction of too many pauses.
Good luck am rooting you you
Very well done analysis, bravo! Especially a couple of observations about some wrong movements of Leverkusener were not that immediate. Thanks for the good job.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good analysis,keep em coming,subscribed,ciao from Italy 🇮🇹
Welcome aboard! I'll do my best to keep producing these videos.
great breakdown, wonderful knowledge
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very good tactical breakdown. Thank you!
Thank you for watching.
Brilliant from you man... keep it up
Thank you very much. Plenty of games coming this summer so hopefully I can keep cranking these out.
Atalanta went for the jugular since the start of the game.
Their man marking system gave no time to Bayer's playmakers to even turn their heads comfortably. Wirtz had to come to his own half to get a whiff of the ball. Those Bayer errors were not a coincidence. Those were forced errors
I agree. Leverkusen did not face many teams who played like this and it looked like they were rattled.
@@campfirefootballthanks for the analysis my friend. Not only very well done and produced, also one of the few who broke the monotony...
I can only wonder youtube full of videos about Alonso had Bayer won...
@@miguelporras8366 I appreciate that. And yes, everybody was waiting to praise Alonso. There was so little coverage or discussion about Atalanta and the mad genius Gasperini. Even after Atalanta thrashed Liverpool, most people didn't really give them a chance. Big mistake.
Xhaka was about to get roooaaaasted😂😂. That was quite a surprise.
This was really good breakdown!
You've got me as a new subscriber. Great analysis.
Thank you!
poor choices of lineup and tactics by xabi alanso, and far more effort expended by atalanta...total beatdown.
Super impressive from Gasperini's men. I've always wanted to see them win something over the years. This was really something though.
@@campfirefootball i am not really a serie a fan, so haven't really watched them much, but they were definitely impressive af. lol, i was extremely surprised how utterly flat leverkusen were. was expecting much more from them, considering how important it was not just for the title's sake, but also for the historical legacy of an undefeated season. 🤷♂
@@douglasharley2440 Yeah I agree. What was interesting watching the match is how things materialize. Leverkusen started the match fine, but after those 3 mistakes, they were under pressure, then fell behind, then conceded a second and just never got a grip on the match. It just got away from them and they didn't find a way like we've become so accustomed to.
Grande Atalanta
You should use some tactics software for such a good analysis
That's terrific feedback. Thank you. I have a tactical board built out on my computer and will use that more as I go forward.
Good video I like the style of the video it makes it easy to understand
Glad to hear you liked the format. Thank you.
You analyzed well. Why Leverkusen not start with Boniface and other two good players. He benched them while Atalanta started with their best players. They down grade Atalanta.
I would love to know from Xabi Alonso why he decided not to start a center forward. It could have worked, but Atalanta were just too good.
Great analysis
Any team that engages in high pressing with sure deploy more players out there and will try to maintain high defensive line which will leave space at the back .. if boniface was on the field earlier leverkusen would have chance for long balls but it wasn’t so.. xabi alonso mess that up
Two Nigerian players were the key, one decided to use his the other put his on the bench
Super Eagles!!! Lookman was outstanding. It was too bad we didn't get to see Boniface from the start though.
As if the world hinged on Nigerian players alone? Look, Atalanta won not simply because Lookman alone. He got 100% of his chances BUT They’ve ALSO got the tactics tight, solid defense, hardworking cogs in the middle (Ederson constantly bullying Fritz and winning balls, Koop playing his strings to attacks line), Scamacca holding up the ball and pulling defenders so Lookman would have the space so he could score. How would you undermine that??
@@ondreiiijealousy kill you , what if lookman lost those goal , meh the boy was determined he doesn’t want to play with any chance , let respect his hardwork , others people also see chance they couldn’t make use of it , if you watch Africa cup you will know lookman did well to for his country, stop the jealous if not him they might not win , God use him to make them win , he is really good both left and right leg ,
@@ondreiiido you know what the phrase the “key” means?
Great video
Maybe we can do man on man marking and pressing with our Level 7s! 😎
They went invincible, but they felt invincible. Big big difference.
nah! I am clear many more people were hoping Atalanta would win - DONE ✅
I was hoping Gasperini would have his moment. Xabi Alonso is young and will probably win a European trophy eventually.
Nice breakdown… but you are looking only at Bayer as the main actor, with what they did wrong… you should have had more focus on Atalanta and what they did right
That's a fair point. Though it was not really my intent. Leverkusen were the team with the ball most of the match and Atalanta's attacks came almost entirely from forcing turnovers and mistakes. Atalanta did brilliantly, but Leverkusen also helped with their sloppiness in passing, the tactical decisions, and Lookman killing them every chance he got. Either way, thank you for stopping by and giving your opinion.
@@campfirefootball my point is that if the result had been the opposite, you would talk about how brilliant Leverkusen was, and not about the sloppiness of Atalanta. It’s a bit sad because Atalanta does not come out of nowhere… 4 years ago was a Champions quarters finalist.
Gasperini has not the fame of Xabi Alonso, but he deserves to be mentioned
It's actually very simple: atalanta is a good team while Leverkusen is sh*t
We all agree That Boniface not starting was a mistake
Alonso probably saw Isak Hien completely physically dominate osimhen, Darwin Nunez, lukaku, gyokeres etc and thought using a target man would be useless. I don’t see enough people mention this fact
That's a good point. Alonso certainly had his reasons. He's obviously not an idiot. I would love to know the full reasons for his team selection and tactics. Maybe some day he'll explain what he was thinking.
@@SenorM2867Hien also just had a bad day at the Coppa final where he was outmuscled and outplayed by Vlahovic. One of the main reasons Atalanta lost to a weak Juve, right before this UEL final.
👍👍👍👍❗️
The correct name is Atalanta, It s no necessary "di Bergamo"; the same thing vale per l'Inter, italian people say Atalanta, Inter...and no Atalanta of Bergamo, Inter of Milan...
Good to know. I was just saying the official name of the club. It's like a lot of clubs. Lille in France are known as LOSC which is Lille Olympique Sporting Club. But nobody says that. It's just Lille.
This is boring honestly
It’s Atlanta not atalanta
EMMM NO
It's Atalanta. It's different from Atlanta in US
tapsoda making a rash pass coz he was pressure by the atalanta player pressing.
on the first goal....palacios is a dm....he is still coz bayern leverkusen dont play man to man marking.
xabi alonso chickened out and pee his pants....he didnt have the big balls to start boniface or schick.
