I love praying the hours. As a charismatic protestant, praying the hours was life changing for me. Been doing it now for around 2 years and will never look back.
First off Sr., let me thank you so much for this video. I spent a good part of yesterday searching for a good video (that I could understand) detailing the Hours. I am still listening to it, however, I had to stop here to let you know, that I just had a quick giggle and I wanted to share it with you. As you were speaking in this video from the beginning I grabbed paper and pen and I am fervently taking notes. While listening and writing I thought to myself, "I'm going to need to write to Sr. and ask her permission to post my notes to friends and family," Then around 7:20 (seven minutes, twenty seconds into the video) you stated 'Are you taking notes, because I am not going to repeat this'? I said a very strong YES! Sr. I am taking notes!" I just wanted to share this with you! Thank you again for this video.

A neat idea for Lent and a great use for the alarm on an iPhone, especially with the existence of "mommy brain fog." :) Also neat that in a sense, each day is a microcosm of salvation history.

You are right. I didn't write it down. I opened Word and typed it down. I put it in my purse and I practice the prayers as I sit at my desk (or wherever I am). You've made it so simple for me. This goes perfect with my Psalters readings that the Women's Prayer group does during times of Lent. Thank you.
That is one beautiful mug, Sister! I'm trying to prepare for my first hours/Liturgy service this Sunday. I'm so nervous! I found Orthodoxy about a year ago and I'm just finding a church. There's so much to learn and know. I don't want to look silly.

Thank you Sister, I’ve been looking for a while as a practicing Orthodox to chant the hrs in my daily prayer life year round without buying another book. Could you refer any Byzantium chants in English the hrs? I giggled a bit as you said you noticed we weren’t writing this down. As I had just thought Nina write this down just before you said that. Made me chuckle and so happy for replay on UA-cam. I’ve subscribed and will follow for more. Blessed is God
Have you heard about the "dynamic horologian"? It's a website that helps a lot with this, and automatically includes the daily commemorations. It's perfect for people with tablets who want to add it to their daily prayer rule

From a catholic perspective, lay folks will chose daily mass over gathering for vespers or matins. I purposely restrict my daily mass (i live across from a cathedral by design) to force myself to vary my prayer life. If i had a choice, which i dont, i would do in a community setting either matins or vespers 2 or 3 times per week, adoration couple times a month, of course mass. Because only mass is available i do extras in my apt on own .... but not faithless ... which is the advantage to a group gathering. I mean my several assistants, not all students, working for me. You can see all of them in our Weekly Comic Strip, if you go to "Comic Strip" at our website: www.coffeewithsistervassa.com. Warm regards from Vienna to wherever you are, henjokongo, SV
i tend to adapt the muslim idea of praying at 'hours' like 'when i get up' 'when i go to bed' because i work shifts etc so regular daily anything is impossible
Thank you Sr. Vassa. Any chance for Serbian translation of the Hours? Online, I could only find hours in liturgical concept, which consists of groups of prayers, psalms, etc.
Good morning sr. Vassa! thank you for the very good exegesis about hours. except Lent , can i do the same during all year; i would like to ask you something more. could you, please, suggest me an orthodox bible commentary; Thank you very much. One of trillions
Lefteris N There ae several commentaries on the Bible that I have examined. I particularly like Johanna Manley's books: The Bible and the Holy Fathers for Orthodox Christians; Isaiah Through the Ages; Orthodox Adult Bible Study: The Epistle to the Hebrews; Orthodox Adult Bible Study: The book of Job, the Church and the Holy Fathers; Grace for Grace: the Psalter and the Holy Fathers. I also recommend the Orthodox Study Bible. It is light on commentary, but is excellent. I pray you will find one or more of these to be helpful! @1961
