He was ambitious (Shooting for the stars) so he pursued fame and fortune. After accomplishing his goals, he realizes that material rewards aren't as important as he once thought. He misses his life on the farm and all of its simple beauties.
He later says "Turn me back into that wild haired gale," and "Turn these diamonds straight back into coal," meaning he would trade it all to go back in time and be that boy on the farm again.
At least that's how I see it!

For someone who has only experienced this earth for 40 years this guy taps into a vibration as old as the concept of time itself. This could be played anywhere on the planet and resonate with anyone who hears it. It is equally tranquil and a little painful combined with a fragile sense of hope. Truly beautiful.

This song played in a beach restaurant when I was with my wife and I remember everything it was so beautiful. We got pregnant soon after and now I want to learn guitar so I can sing this to my baby girl. She was two days old and crying and she listened to me sing the whole thing despite my happy tears. Great song.

remember when our songs were just like prayers.
like gospel hymns that you called in the air.
come down come down sweet reverence,
unto my simple house and ring…
    and ring.
ring like silver, ring like gold
ring out those ghosts on the ohio
ring like clear day wedding bells
were we the belly of the beast or the sword that fell…we’ll never tell.
come to me clear and cold on some sea
watch the world spinning waves…like some machine
now i’ve been crazy couldn’t you tell
i threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell
now i’m covered up in straw, belly up on the table
well i drank and sang, and passed in the stable.
that tall grass grows high and brown,
well i dragged you straight in the muddy ground
and you sent me back to where i roam
    well i cursed and i cried, but now i know…now i know
and i ran back to that hollow again
the moon was just a sliver back then
and i ached for my heart like some tin man
when it came oh it beat and it boiled and it rang…it’s ringing
ring like crazy, ring like hell
turn me back into that wild haired gale
ring like silver, ring like gold
turn these diamonds straight back into coal.

The banjo lines made me perk my ears while waiting for my cappuccino in a coffee shop a few minutes ago. I asked the barista what was playing. Looks like I discovered some great, new-to-me artists. Playing a banjo tastefully and sparsely is very difficult, not many can (or want to) do it. I'm also happy to hear that the folks in my old home (Germany) are finally catching on to this kind of music. When I still lived there, nobody knew what Americana is nor wanted anything to do with it....

Same here. Not sure where I heard it but I can’t explain how happy I am that I did. When people talk about music from the 60’s and 70’s and how many good artists there were back then, I wish I could show them all this guy as living proof that there are musicians who are just as good if not better. The issue is humans got too stupid and lazy to appreciate it.

There are so many profound lines in the lyrics that have obviously gripped so many people. I think for me one of them is "Ring crazy, ring like hell. Turn me back into that wild-haired gale." 4:58. There's something so immensely nostalgic about the line. Plus the way he altered the melody on this particular line was so painfully good.

Gregory is brilliant... Steve Varney comes along and adds the icing to this particular cake. Sweet, evocative and timeless banjo artistry. It's like both being transported back in time, and forward to something even better. This is brilliance, it is just, magnificence - a modern classic. I want to say more but that's just wasted effort. This work shines.

Carolina Theater in Durham last night. It was one heck of a show. The venue was great, acoustics perfect, and he was so relaxed. This guy's horticulture background shows in all of his lyrics. He's inspiring things on my farm and my soul is better because of this man's music. He in 2016 is what Jackson Browne was to me in my teens and into my twenties.

I cannot stop listening to this version. It’s beyond beautiful. To me this song is about him breaking up & moving on even though it hurt . Which is exactly what I’m going through right now. I love this! It helps sooo much! Music is my life! ❤️

I love that it's singing, in a park, somewhere? Could be anytime, in history. A covered wagon, or a campfire song, right now, in the woods. Just instrument's & the talented artists, music. Time traveling music. ❤

Gregory I where have you been all my life. Your songs and music so soothing to the soul. God bless you young man may he keep you on your path. I'm late husband could sing he had a beautiful voice he would have loved you. I sent your video to my daughter she can sing and plays guitar little bit she also has a beautiful voice. It has a lot of lack of confidence. I think a lot of singers seem to have that my husband was really good but he didn't believe in himself. I hope you keep making soul searching Soul soothing songs they are wonderful

This video is probably the most human and personal music video I've ever watched. Two men, a guitar, and a banjo, playing an amazing song in a park surrounded by people just going about their daily lives. It's grounded, peaceful, and utterly beautiful ❤️

I’m 18 and I was 8 when I heard this song and to this day it’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Every time it fills me with so much happiness and nostalgia and at the same time sadness. Props to you Mr. Isakov.

I don't know what it is about this song but I just can't seem to kill it. I've been listening to it for several years now and it still radiates my soul. I go to sleep to this song. It calms my day. I've seen them in concert several years ago in Atlanta and they were great. He's so nice as we had the chance to chat and take pictures with them. By far one of the best songwriters of our time.
Great video btw. The color of the fall is the best color and this song definite compliments the video. One of the best video from Cardinal Sessions.

+Thomas Mallon i think the lyric is "Ache for my heart like some tin man." i think it is referencing the tin man from the wizard of oz because he wanted a heart. I could be wrong though.

Remember when our songs were just like prayers
Like gospel hymns that you caught in the air?
Come down, come down sweet reverence
Unto my simple house and ring
    And ring
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Ring out those ghosts on the Ohio
Ring like clear day wedding bells
Were we the belly of the beast or the sword that fell?
    We'll never tell
And come to me clear and cold
    On some sea
Watch the world spin in waves
    Mad machine
Now I've gone crazy, couldn't you tell?
You threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell
Now I'm covered up in straw, belly up on a table
Well, I drank and sang, and passed in the stable (hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm-hmm)
And that tall grass grows high and brown
Well, I dragged you straight in the muddy ground
And you sent me back to where I roam
Well, I cursed and I cried, but now I know
    Oh, now I know
And I ran back to that hollow again
The moon was just a sliver back then
And I ached for my heart like some tin man
When it came, oh, it beat and it boiled and it rang
    Oh, it's ringing
Ring like crazy, ring like hell
Turn me back into that wild-haired gale
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Turn these diamonds straight back into coal
Turn these diamonds straight back into coal (hmm-hmm)
