  • Gregory Alan Isakov is a Singer/Songwriter living on his ranch in Colorado. His latest record 'The Weatherman' was released in 2013. His folk-music songs are both fragile and strong, packed with beautiful melodies and great lyrics. We met him a few days ago in Cologne on his European tour together with Steve Varney on banjo on a sunny afternoon. This one is off the 2007 record "That Sea, The Gambler" and it's called "The Stable Song".

    __________________________________
Cardinal Sessions was founded in the summer of 2010. They challenge the classic music video and try to replace impersonal footage with immediate and emotional snapshots.
Bands from all over the world with their different genres present their songs reduced to the essence of the musical spectrum - only vocals and unplugged instruments. Due to the spontaneous live-aspect and the approach to record every song without any additional rehearsal, songs emerge that often sound significantly different to their album versions.
We film on locations that the musicians mostly choose by themselves: remote places, frequented streets, parks, woods, fields, bars; nothing is impossible. We have accomplished our goal if the location fits well to the background of the music we and the artists want to present. But our most important purpose is that there are no borders: we film everything that we like, no matter how popular, famous or also unknown a band might be. It is still important for us to support local talents and it will always stay part of our concept.
The Cardinal Sessions team can also be booked: for example to film short documentaries of album recordings, studio recordings or live concert moments that you want to capture.

He was ambitious (Shooting for the stars) so he pursued fame and fortune. After accomplishing his goals, he realizes that material rewards aren't as important as he once thought. He misses his life on the farm and all of its simple beauties.
He later says "Turn me back into that wild haired gale," and "Turn these diamonds straight back into coal," meaning he would trade it all to go back in time and be that boy on the farm again.
At least that's how I see it!

For someone who has only experienced this earth for 40 years this guy taps into a vibration as old as the concept of time itself. This could be played anywhere on the planet and resonate with anyone who hears it. It is equally tranquil and a little painful combined with a fragile sense of hope. Truly beautiful.

The banjo lines made me perk my ears while waiting for my cappuccino in a coffee shop a few minutes ago. I asked the barista what was playing. Looks like I discovered some great, new-to-me artists. Playing a banjo tastefully and sparsely is very difficult, not many can (or want to) do it. I'm also happy to hear that the folks in my old home (Germany) are finally catching on to this kind of music. When I still lived there, nobody knew what Americana is nor wanted anything to do with it....

remember when our songs were just like prayers.
like gospel hymns that you called in the air.
come down come down sweet reverence,
unto my simple house and ring…
    and ring.
ring like silver, ring like gold
ring out those ghosts on the ohio
ring like clear day wedding bells
were we the belly of the beast or the sword that fell…we’ll never tell.
come to me clear and cold on some sea
watch the world spinning waves…like some machine
now i’ve been crazy couldn’t you tell
i threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell
now i’m covered up in straw, belly up on the table
well i drank and sang, and passed in the stable.
that tall grass grows high and brown,
well i dragged you straight in the muddy ground
and you sent me back to where i roam
    well i cursed and i cried, but now i know…now i know
and i ran back to that hollow again
the moon was just a sliver back then
and i ached for my heart like some tin man
when it came oh it beat and it boiled and it rang…it’s ringing
ring like crazy, ring like hell
turn me back into that wild haired gale
ring like silver, ring like gold
turn these diamonds straight back into coal.

Carolina Theater in Durham last night. It was one heck of a show. The venue was great, acoustics perfect, and he was so relaxed. This guy's horticulture background shows in all of his lyrics. He's inspiring things on my farm and my soul is better because of this man's music. He in 2016 is what Jackson Browne was to me in my teens and into my twenties.

Same here. Not sure where I heard it but I can’t explain how happy I am that I did. When people talk about music from the 60’s and 70’s and how many good artists there were back then, I wish I could show them all this guy as living proof that there are musicians who are just as good if not better. The issue is humans got too stupid and lazy to appreciate it.

There are tons of beautiful artists on Cardinal Sessions, yet this session truly makes me nostalgic the most.
I find this live performance so melancholic and deep, played with the heart, genuinely.

I don't know what it is about this song but I just can't seem to kill it. I've been listening to it for several years now and it still radiates my soul. I go to sleep to this song. It calms my day. I've seen them in concert several years ago in Atlanta and they were great. He's so nice as we had the chance to chat and take pictures with them. By far one of the best songwriters of our time.
Great video btw. The color of the fall is the best color and this song definite compliments the video. One of the best video from Cardinal Sessions.

This is a wonderful song. I've listened to many versions on You Tube, but like this one the best. The banjo is crisp and the tempo just right, to me. The lyrics are mysterious, but if broken into smaller parts all feel familiar. Especially the lyrics "Now I’ve been crazy couldn’t you tell. I threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell. Now I’m covered up in straw, belly up on the table. Well and sang and drank, and passed in the stable " I'm not sure if the person in the song passed out or died on the table, but I interpret it my own way. I believe this "vagueness" and "disconnectedness" is deliberate and intended. Gregory's song writing style reminds me of my past. Hardly a song writer, but very much a single traveler, I can still feel "Distance" and "Transient" in his songs, and it reminds me of what I'd experienced. Thank you for posting this song, and to Gregory for writing this beautiful song!

I love that it's singing, in a park, somewhere? Could be anytime, in history. A covered wagon, or a campfire song, right now, in the woods. Just instrument's & the talented artists, music. Time traveling music. ❤

There's no specific meaning, but Gregory has said that the song is simply "about everything." The meaning is whatever you interpret it to be, which in a song is rare. It's beautiful.

These lyrics! --- woa woa woa!
The Stable Song - by Gregory Alan Isakov
Remember when our songs were just like prayers
Like gospel hymns that you called in the air
Come down, come down sweet reverence
Unto my simple house and ring
    And ring
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Ring out those ghosts on the Ohio
Ring like clear day wedding bells
Were we the belly of the beast or the sword that fell
    We'll never tell
Come to me clear and cold on some sea
Watch the world spinning waves, like that machine
Now I've been crazy couldn't you tell
I threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell
Now I'm covered up in straw, belly up on the table
Well I drank and sang, and passed in the stable
That tall grass grows high and brown
Well I dragged you straight in the muddy ground
And you sent me back to where I roam
Well I cursed and I cried, but now I know
    Now I know
And I ran back to that hollow again
The moon was just a sliver back then
And I ached for my heart like some tin man
When it came oh it beat and it boiled and it rang
    Oh it's ringing
Ring like crazy, ring like hell
Turn me back into that wild haired gale
Ring like silver, ring like gold
Turn these diamonds straight back into coal

Gregory I where have you been all my life. Your songs and music so soothing to the soul. God bless you young man may he keep you on your path. I'm late husband could sing he had a beautiful voice he would have loved you. I sent your video to my daughter she can sing and plays guitar little bit she also has a beautiful voice. It has a lot of lack of confidence. I think a lot of singers seem to have that my husband was really good but he didn't believe in himself. I hope you keep making soul searching Soul soothing songs they are wonderful

Dream of my lifetime was being at his concert with my daughter at Red Rocks in August '19 - Pre COVID days. I've lived long enough to easier attend 100 concerts and this was definitely one of the best of my lifetime. Had tickets to see him again with the Lumineers last summer ('20 COVID summer); hoping I live long enough to cash those tickets next summer. Whenever live music safely returns, his will be the first ticket I buy. The best poet of this generation.
