Private Internet Access have an interesting history , check out Linus Tech Tips for why.
I'm glad you're getting that sweet sweet ad revenue. Buy more stuff!
I've been using PIA for 5(?) years... simple interface, easy to operate, zero problems. Take it from me, a random stranger on the internet, this is the VPN _for you!_
@@daedalus_20v If you know as much about safe internet access as you do about moving house then I will take your word as gospel and sign up to PIA right now.
(not really I am just going to click on Matt's link to satisfy the algorithm)
Ugh please don't shill VPN companies, they are almost always lying and spreading fear to justify a product that just enables them to do everything they claim to protect you from.
Between the military and post-military defense contracting, I've moved 17 times in 22 years. Some general moving tips:
1) Always start packing earlier than you think you need to. Always. You have more stuff than you think, and less time than you think. I promise. Nobody who's ever moved has regretted being "too" prepared for moving day. Start now.
2) Starting "too early" means you also have time to make packing lists - do this. Not a generic one-word label on a box. Not a weird numbering system. _A packing list._ You will NOT "just remember" that X item is in Y box, you will forget your stupid numbering code, and since you didn't start early, you're going to be tossing random shit in boxes at the last minute with labels that don't match the contents.
3) Always ALWAYS unpack _every single box_ when you get where you're going. Otherwise, the thing you're going to spend HOURS desperately searching for in 6 weeks will have ended up shoved in the back of a closet somewhere, and because you didn't label everything like you were supposed to, it is effectively gone.
4) When you find things during your packing process that you haven't seen in 6 years or have forgotten about owning completely, don't bring them with you. You don't need to drag every piece of crap you've ever owned with you, forever. Sell it, donate it, or toss it. One less box to carry.
5) DO NOT GET A STORAGE LOCKER. No human in the history of modern civilization has ever actually used a storage locker "just for a month, just to help with the move" and neither will you. It's a trap. You're gonna pay that bill over and over and leave your crap there indefinitely because it's less effort than moving it all (again).
Moving always sucks. Be smart and make it suck less. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Military family kid. Moving sucks, especially when you like Legos. I have probably 20 nice Lego sets that are in a box in a million prices because the movers broke them. Thank god my dad retired. No more moving.
i got a storage locker once, kept it until i had to renew my credit card, got the late payment notice in the mail, and moved out. If i'm being honest, i had mostly forgetten i'd had it, and i had moved from a 480sq ft single bedroom to a 2 story house and there really wasn't much in there to begin with. I did find my missing 3.21 ratio BMW differential in there though, so that was a nice present
Having done a house move last year, this is a very good list.
Just moved to the new place a week a go. Thank god i do most of the things you pointed out. The house is set in and running frickin fast
Excellent TED talk would read again
Never underestimate the power that “it could be a lamp” has on how much stuff you have around. It’s probably at least 50% of stuff.
The other 50% could be a little table for drinking tea and stuff
Gives me an idea for this cute little chainsaw crankshaft that's been sitting in my garage for years. It could be a nightlight.
A couple of months ago I threw away two old warped 330mm brake discs.
How wonderful feet those had made for a lamp, but WAIT
Luckily I also have two 325mm discs that are worn out, they have just been collecting dust for about 7 years 😂
I first misinterpreted your comment to mean stuff could illuminate due to combustion and so don't keep too many piles of flammable junk in the same space as the more valuable junk.
I’d say I relate to all these replies,,,,
So I've been camping near and surveiling the wrong house for the last couple of weeks!? You've got to be a little quicker on the edits there Matt

I had a fire in my garage last year and taking inventory for the insurance company was a nightmare. I had so many individual items, like spindles and differentials, that the poor adjuster person was completely unable to identify. Ironically stuff like that was also largely unfazed by the fire, but it had to be accounted for. But now I know exactly how much crap I had- over 600 individual items, down to trays of 4, 5, and 6 mm bolts, drive belts, motorcycle pegs, and tiny tires for large scale RC cars.
Try telling the temper on those parts it was largely unfazed by fire...
Wait - 600 items as in singular items, or classes of items. If singular, I think I have around 6 million items in my garage.
[Do specs of dirt count as items??]
dang that sucks. sorry to hear that
@@krazed0451 I have a feeling he meant it was identifiable, not perfectly usable. At least that's what you tell the adjuster.
about paint disposal - every time You go to home depo shop, take one can with You and slip it on the paint mixing station somewhere in corner.
Jack stands for the cabinets, brilliant. You think through things more than me.
I've installed many cabinets with Jack stands. I also use a small bottle jack to make the fine adjustments.
Matt’s cabinets crushed those two Harbor Freight jack stands.
I've never related more to a UA-cam Video than this one. More Countertops equals more piles. Packing always takes longer than expected. Random people showing up to my house. It's all here.
I also find abandoned clown-scooter projects when i deep-clean things, its scary its like we're the same

I just moved from a 4 car garage to a 3 car garage and a separate shop. Your tub progression is spot on.
It will take you longer than a year to derandomize those tubs.
Speaking from experience … they will never be derandomized. 🤣
@@MickeyD100 Having recently tried to derandomize some piles of stuff in my room, you can get a lot of it derandomized but never all of it
When I heard him say they would take a year I was like, ha. Haha. Hahaha. I'm a year and a half into trying to create the space to be able to open the tubs from my last move. And before that had JUST got the garage sorted from my previous move which was years ago.
@@MickeyD100 Entropy works against us here
For insurance purposes I'd do a video inventory with commentary on what the items are and the cost to replace them. The hurricane is what reminded of that as I've lost everything twice from storms on the east coast. Just an idea that's saved me and the adjuster a lot of aggravation.
That is brilliant!
Even my deep and abiding hate of video editing doesn't apply.Just speak clearly, hold frame for a few seconds then onto the next item.
The insurance guy can wear out the pause button on *his* computer 😆
Many thanks
I should really do this
Being broke or homeless really helps you choose what to keep. Not that I recommend actively seeking out one of these situations, but they sure do give you great motivation to sort.

You can weld pin stand holes in the land speed car. You can slot wheels in the pin stand holes to help roll on the trailer. Pin stands are nice too.
If there's any human that deserves a crowd-funded GIANT, fully equipped garage, it is Matt.
This garage needs to be on a very large property, that can have its own race track(s).
That may have just won you the "Segue of the Month". Well Done.
You can call your nearest Dunn Edward's paint store or any paint store and ask if they take paint for recycling, make sure you specify how much you're taking to them as they might not be able to take it all at once.
Can't miss the new garage reveal now can I. Sleep can wait.
I have had the same experience, we had two tiny garden sheds at the old house, and a whole.36 sq meter shed at the new house (the old house was only 67sq meters in total)... some how I've filled the new shed but the old ones aren't yet entirely empty.
Excellent as always Matt - I am continually amazed at the amount of stuff I’ve somehow acquired. I *think* I’m in my forever house now, so it’ll be my executor who’ll have the problem of sorting it out. Algorithm hailed 👍
My buddy has been considering moving south to Tennessee. We were talking about it and he just goes “I have a lot of crap”. He’s got several project vehicles and bikes as well as very large machinery like a massive sheet metal break, giant welder, bread roller etc and thinking about moving all of it several hundred miles was very intimidating.
Your move describes my last move down to almost the last detail: the hubris of thinking you have too much time, the panic of realizing you have negative 7 days to deal with your garage, and the profound disappointment of realizing your new, bigger garage is somehow exactly the same size as your last garage. The only substantive difference was the land speed car.
the bit about table space and piles of stuff on it, is right on point **looks over at table next to desk, piled with crap**
Mills for milling, and lathes for lathing 😉 Cheers!
Great job on the video Matt! Thanks for making it. Loved your breakover joke and reverse callback.
I remember when you posted that video of you driving home. Having lived near there I knew where it was and immediately thought "He is going to regret posting this". Ha ha. Congrats on the new place. (DM me the address for the house warming party)
Broooo make more videos, this is super fun to watch and I've already watched your others
Another terrific video. thanks. I can totally relate. Developers were sniffing around. I decided that at 72 I couldn't afford to move again. As you say, the house is easy, I only have three cars and 400 square feet of garage but still a daunting task. I bought and built a couple of tables (on wheels) and realized that it was too many a while back.
Looking at the state of my garage/shop/potting shed- maybe a move is what I need as well. I've got more than a few things I forgot I owned, or don't recall what they belonged to. Most of them car parts. Great channel Matt, keep it up.
BTDT... Moved at the height of the Pandemic. 250 miles. Moving house was easy. The garage, not so much. Two parts cars, one non-runner, and 5 runners. I had about 10 years worth of "stuff you have no use for, but can't throw out". My mantra became "You take a box, you make it very heavy, and then you put it in the truck". Repeat ad nauseum. Glad you made it.
This sounds a lot like the move I just did. The progression from organized, sorted boxes to random tubs of stuff that happened to be near a certain location in the garage/basement was the worst, as I knew I’d be unable to find anything in the latter as soon as it went in the truck. I, too, made the mistake of moving myself, but rather than decide to rely on movers next time, I bought a 26’ enclosed racing trailer. In the mean time, I get to use that for the Lemons car.
that doesnt sound like a bad plan
i think i will do that when i move out of my parents house.
The random tubs is the last stop on the way to using garbage bags (and not to throw away).
@@dennisferron8847 ah yes, I eventually got to that point as well. In fact, I think some of my stuff is still in garbage bags.
Well done. I am happy to see how well you are installed in your new garage/house. This flipflops are from a braziliam brand (Havaianas) and I have pair of then.

I had to move about a year and a half ago. Mill, lathe, one working but not road legal car that could go on a separate truck and my project car which was in bits at the time I think. I ended up paying professional movers who had experience with workshops. They were excellent. It took months to unpack everything and the only thing that went missing was the handle on my pan brake which I remember the chap telling me he'd taken off to make it easy to move and he'd put it somewhere safe. It must still be safe somewhere.
I helped my dad move his shop years ago. We had the moving van about half loaded when we noticed that it was sitting REALLY low. Checked and yep, it's on the bump stops. So we started unloading stuff until there was some space between the spring and bump stop. Turns out machinery is really heavy.
Congratulations on the upgrade!🤘🤘
Giant electric scooter? Marking my calendar 3 years in the future.
Excellent garage Matt, looks really neat.

This man actually moved house for the sponsor transition. That's next level
I like the look of that giant scooter. I do hope that when we finally see it in action, it seats (stands?) plenty of people with synchronised scooting legs.
Your work was well worth it Matt! A lot of work but wow, looks fantastic💯
niiice... love your wit.. and timing
Congratulations on the move! Too bad people can be so creepy, but you live , you learn!
People sometimes equate a public presence with openness. Matt does this for income, not so he can increase the number of people that show up at his house. The thought of strange creepers showing up to either love me or destroy me is antidote against my creating anything public (as though I have anything interesting to say, lol)
I may have to try PIA... tyvm for that. I NEVER watch that portion of anybody's videos...but I am glad that I did this time!
So you can’t throw away paint in California? Can you throw away things that have been painted? I was thinking the outside of those paint tins might need a bit of sprucing up. Maybe several coats of sprucing up. Just wondering…
You can't throw away liquid paint. Solid paint is fine. And there are household hazardous waste collection points around. It's no big deal.
Liquid paint is a problem. You can buy 'inert'-ing chemicals you can mix into the paint that makes it ok to toss, depending on the paint of course.
...but then this is California, where reasonableness about such things is not only defenestrated, it's done so with prejudice. Probably for great reasons, but still.
@@mikeybhoutex Those driers are way overpriced. Just use the cheapest walmart kitty litter.
Love the new garage! Good luck with the unpacking and finding what you packed. The tubs... over and under $500 in tubs?
I like the stuff to gas analogy. I've been using an adaptation of Parkinson's Law for years. Parkinson's Law is: "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion." Mine is: "stuff expands to fill the space available." Jack stands for cabinet supports is also awesome. Scissor jacks are also very useful if you want to be able to make fine adjustments. I used them to move a row of cabinets up by a half inch to clear a slightly tall kitchen appliance.
Man you inspire me to make some videos of the crazy car stuff I do. Sadly most of it is already built. Though my FZR400 with a YZF600r heart is getting a complete revamp. Now I own a welder and that gives me more to do. Hope I catch you around LA someday.
ay gorman. on that hill on pronghorn its alot easer to just pull the clutch in and rool down the other water erosion corner that's like in line with the main trail. just one lege instead of being offcamber crawilg down like 4. i haven't been in a while its been super crowded since the pandemic started. if you ride in from the rest of the park you can just ride up past the tool both for the track and get some laps in, by far the cheapest full service track in solcal.

In 1994 I bought a Husqvarna 610 for off and on road use and discovered that a dedicated supermoto and more dirt bikes, four in two states, was the way to go. All hail the two stroke for off road use.
congrats with the new garage!
Was hoping to see the old garage clean!
I had this exact problem a week ago, had to move out of a massive 4 bedroom house with 2 2car carports and a 2 car shed... the house was a pain to pack on its own. When I got to the shed I was over it ended up just filling horse floats to save time on having to sort it all, 16 full floats of tools and parts for projects, no feking idea where or how I had stored that much but I did, worst bit is I took 4 loads of steel and ally out of my shed to save space moving, nope.
My shop tidying system is just like yours. I still have a couple of random mess tubs I haven't unwrapped from my first move in 1998... 😁
Self made "Compactus" rolling stacked office cabinets on parallel tracks. Small foot print, huge storage capacity for tubs.
Last time I moved, I tried selling some of my stuff, but people just laughed, so then I tried giving it away, and most people laughed, but my next door neighbor was as big a pack rat as I am, and even though he admitted that someday he would have to haul it to the dump, that was a problem for future neighbor, and so he took most of it. The rest he helped me take to the dump. He was a good neighbor.
Just moved a lathe across a state and into a basement...I feel your pain!
Yes, stuff expands. 5000 sqft of garage. Stuff has exploded to completely fill it...
This video was quite relatable, too much stuff always ends up everywhere
Wow you have Stalkers. You have finally made it!
This is so relatable it's like even when I find a spot for stuff it tends to end up on the tabletops again
Horizontal surfaces collect stuff.
That scooter is absurd and insane. I love it
Welcome back to the redondo area! I’ll look for your jag at the next Ruby’s car show!
I love your sense of humor!
I’ll be damned if this wasn’t the smoothest pivot to a sponsor in the history of UA-cam
"presumably there is a house attached to it". A friend once told his real estate agent he is looking for a 5 car garage with a house attached.
you can recycle paint at any paint store in CA it just needs a working lid and label. I photo copied a paint label and printed out 10 copies for 10 cans w/missing labels and they accepted all of them. if the paint is dried out you can take it to the dump.
7:45, that is pure comedy. I love it. That is the embodiment of what most Californias feel.
Always a good day when Matt posts
Congrats on your too-small garage!

I can so relate to this, it gives me a weird smile..... we planned and booked for one large moving truck, it turned into 3. (47m3 or 1660cu.ft.)
