San Diego tightens regulations on beach yoga

- The City of San Diego has cracked down on beach yoga activities, drawing criticism from instructors who have long been conducting free classes at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park.
It’s good to know our city is focused on what’s important. 🙄
I see you work for sarcasm like I do! 😂. I love it! I wish the pay was equal to my skills 😢. It’s tough out here.
Yoga regulated illegals in boats not so much
It is annoying when you’re just trying to walk and enjoy your day and there’s 50 hipsters all around you😂😂😂
Managed Democracy can fix this.
Meanwhile across town… the cartel is murdering
Whom are they bothering? Who complained? It's a cliff, not a beach. Yoga is quiet. It doesn't leave behind trash. Trying to figure out how this is an issue.
Is it classes were they charge participants?
donations = no taxes/less taxes for the city. that's why. that want their share: rent a yoga studio ($3500 in SD), and so on... see?
It's a nuisance. It should have a separate area.
If there are too many people out there teaching classes and selling stuff, pretty soon there is no room left for anybody else. Competing vendors/teachers can also get into disputes with each other (e.g., "I was here first!" "No you weren't, this is MY space!"). With a permit, they can be spaced out so there are no arguments about space and nobody needs to be crowded.
@@bluebee5266please explain to me why you consider a quiet hour long class a nuisance. I truly want to know why you think this…
So with high crime, high taxes, businesses leaving the state, huge homeless problems and this is what the city is cracking down on?
High crime? lol😂 Say you are talking from your ass without saying it.
Well yes, these are mostly white. not armed. Not angry or aggressive people who are not backed up by Angry Aggressive people.

I wonder if it’s because they want money out of the yoga instructors 😅
Yes, because there is limited space in certain locations and if you don't limit it a little bit pretty soon the entire beach is taken up with people using it to make money, leaving no room for anybody else. Why didn't the reporter bother ask the City if they'd be given a permit if they applied for one? Why didn't the reporter ask if there was a FEE for the permit?

What is the rational for making the Yoga class get a permit versus a group of people putting up a volley ball net and have 25 or more people either watching or playing?
If those people were on that beach with needles, setting up homeless tents, or doing sex work, the city wouldn't bother them.
Yoga sex workers? 😅 Hmmm.

almost like the cartel elected officials for you. that you thought you voted for. Or did vote for, just because they’re blue no matter who.
This is a First Amendment violation - it’s a public area and the public has a right to peaceably assemble and freely associate. Especially when it’s not a commercial activity. Even the rule they’re quoting says 4 or more people gathered for a _COMMERCIAL ACTIVITY_ which a free yoga class is not commercial.
The way this is being interpreted and enforced at the moment, would apply equally to a family of 5 doing anything together at the same beach.
I wonder of they could beat this on first amendment grounds if they registered as a religious establishment and argued that they are doing yoga at a beach as a religious act...
@@immcguyver07the right to assembly doesn't require religious reasons

Every state should be happy to have people caring for their health, given the obesity and drug crisis the United States is in.
There is crime everywhere and they are concerned about people wanting to exercise on the beach, which goes on daily with walking, running, surfing, hanging out on the towel and chilling with mind therapy, etc... this is absolutely ludicrous!
As far as the news I’ve gotten goes, I don’t hear insane San Francisco stories about San Diego. But I could be wrong. Isn’t it nice that their problems go to this extent? At that level, you think about quality of life and quality of society. Not survival. Therefore then, how do you like it when 20 people are hoarding public space and running some kind of program or agenda. It’s annoying, isn’t it?
Sounds too free..
US cops don't arrest criminals, they create criminals.
Walking, running, and surfing are all solo activities that are public. A yoga class is a commercial activity, regardless if the yoga instructor charges for the services or not. Performing any kind of commercial service in a public space requires a permit. That means if someone was offering group walking, group surfing, or group running services as a class or any other commercial endeavor, whether for a fee or not, they would need a permit. It is not the activity that is the problem, it's the capacity in which the activity is taking place that is the problem.
It's really not that hard to understand.
Prohibiting yoga is NOT what this is about. Individuals can go do yoga on the beach all they want. This is about running a business on a public beach. Any business. These yoga instructors are using the public beach as their venue. It's not fair to the other vendors who get a licence to sell on the beach. They need to get a licence no different than the hot dog vendor or go rent a business space.
Police protecting us from health, wellness, and food vendors trying to make an honest living.
They live next to Mexico
They have homelessness everywhere on the streets. And they give the yoga people a hard time. Wtf ?

I’ve about had it with this crap. I went in to Starbucks yesterday and there was two male bums in the Women’s restroom. I witnessed 3 ladies walk to restroom , open the door only to see two grown ass bums in the women’s bathroom. The ladies came out practically running and scared because homeless guys were in the ladies bathroom. I immediately walked up to both dudes and told them to kick rocks and that they have no damn business in the ladies restroom. I had to get loud and tell them get the fuck out. And they did.
And it sucks because the police don’t do shit anymore and you people wonder why innocent bystanders get killed nowadays for trying to be the hero . Because we have no choice because law and order don’t exist as well as common sense or courtesy. TF out here
Will now they been very tough on homelessness too I don’t see them as much as it was 3 years ago
Money is the root of evil!
A “public beach” in California, you need a permit to look at the Pacific Ocean if 5 of you and your besties are together. Next, a permit to look up at the night stars and a Public Works inspection to flush the toilet. WTF happened to California? And, those that stay are not only OK with that but vote in more of the same nanny politicians. Unbelievable.
Whew … I’m glad the city finally got their priorities in order

Yep they screw everybody and it progressively gets worse.
We crack down on yoga not crime
Its crack up. You can do crack on beach.
If you WANTED to destroy both a sense of community and people's connection to the natural world - I'm not sure how you could accomplish that any better than with legislation and enforcement like this. I watched a similar thing happen at a small pond in north county where until a few years ago I took my young grandsons to feed the ducks and learn to fish by catching and releasing some small catfish. First the park service put up signs to stop all fishing which really disappointed my grandsons. And about a year ago they put up signs stopping people from feeding the ducks. As my brother once put it regarding such ridiculous legislation - "the bean counters have won." Cutting urban children off from the few options they have to engage the natural world is completely clueless and cruel in my opinion. Similarly it makes no sense to ban people from doing a free yoga class on the beach. : /
Feeding ducks depending on what you feed them is unutritional to the point of making them vulnerable to disease. If you’re feeding them frozen peas instead of bread, I’d give you a pass.
@@americanbookdragon how about 25lb bags of "duck feed" from the local feed store - which we handed out in small bags to any other children we saw so they could feed the ducks too?

Yesterday it was another four times on fifth Avenue in Hillcrest, after being screamed at for simply walking the sidewalk and followed by a naked from the waist down crazy homeless woman on fourth Avenue. This city was once safe, clean and beautiful back when the police were allowed to enforce rules and laws. I recently at Walgreens and watched a man who appeared to be homeless start stuffing merchandise into a duffel bag right in front of me. It's called taxation of the low hanging fruit. It's not about laws or public safety, it's about generating income for the city. All cities in CA have figured this out and are employing it, and you can thank your City Managers, City Attorney's, and the Mayors and City Council Members that you keep voting in. These folks have figured out that if you tax people with money (parking tickets as a thankyou for shopping downtown, permit requirements for everything, things stacked onto building permits, etc.) you can keep giving yourselves those sweet salaries and benefit packages, keep getting raises, and most importantly, pay for the 3 other people who've taken early retirement from every position, that you now have to fund for the next 50yrs each. Meanwhile, crime, drug-zombie encampments, bold thefts from all manner of stores, take over of campuses by terrorists, goes on, and on and on, untouched. But show up for a yoga class, or get caught walking your well behaved dog off-leash, and it's a swat team call out, and the crime of the century.
Thats how Philadelphia worked when i lived there. Crime was everywhere, but a FLEET of parking enforcers were just waiting for your meter to run out or if you parked in a wrong spot got even a minute. Tickets to all law abiding citizens and tourists- a huge income stream.
@@dreamsofturtles1828 100% what's happened here. We're a heavily touristed, small city, and have a renowned university. When this "taxation of low hanging fruit" started here about 20yrs ago, we jumped from $8 hand written parking tickets, to a literally fleet of both plain clothed, and specialty "meter-maid" vehicles traveling the downtown loop like a swarm. Tickets jumped to $54, and then all the meters were replaced with electronic meters with blinking red lights, and now those have been replaced with kiosks in random places, and I have no idea how those keep track of where a person is parked, or their time... but here we are. Meanwhile all manner of drug zombie behavior in that downtown touristed core, 24hrs a day, and them living in our "protected" creeks in tent cities, and they are free to do so.

There's classes constantly and it's turned into an outdoor gym, takes up parking, and why do people have to hear a yoga instruction class going on while they're trying to just relax at a beach? The regulation isn’t to “keep people from doing yoga”. It’s to keep obvious regular yoga entrepreneurs from hogging public areas with their classes. Yes, they claim “donation only” but donations are absolutely expected and tax free for the instructor. There’s also a specific instructor who is rude to non-yoga people who want to use the “public” land during his revenue-generating classes. I am so happy that everything else is taken care of in People's Republic of San Diego - no drug problems, the crime is non-existent, and the only nuisance are those pesky Yoga delinquents...
Yeah surf classes need permits, it's always been like that
You need A "permit " to teach someone how to do something now?
North Korea probably doesn't require a permit for beach yoga but Commiefornia does?
Why’d I have to scroll so far down to find this sensible comment?
@@magesalmanac6424 maybe because it's not a sensible comment. People should be able to do whatever they want to on the beach as long as they are not breaking "normal" laws like theft, assault, indecent exposure, dogs running loose, etc
Nobody's "enjoyment of the beach" is being infringed by women stretching.
The only people complaining are the jealous overweight women and the gay dudes. NOBODY else cares .
@@magesalmanac6424 because it's not a sensible comment. Do families larger than 4 have to get a permit for beach yoga also?
@@charlesritter6640 You're just the type of person that would go to this spot and be angry that you can't enjoy it without all the yoga classes taking up the space and having to listen to the yoga instructor. You can't imagine how annoying it is to go somewhere that is for all to enjoy to see that you are unwittingly inside a gym with fitness classes. It's not an outdoor gym it's a public beach and it needs to stay that way and how they keep it that way is by regulating it with permits.. otherwise it gets quickly overrun.
I’m not sure if public spaces are for paid for classes.
@@ГригорийБедник-л4в fair enough but the idea that some body is charging another person for what they could learn just by watching in a public place seems silly.
I don’t pay my taxes so someone can set up shop in public places.
You wouldn’t mind if I set up a car repair business in your driveway would you ? I mean you only park there 12-16 hours a day. What would it hurt ?
One would think that anyone who attends the class is local. Therefore, their taxes pay for the beaches and parks. It's not like people drive from out of town (or out of state) to take a yoga class.
@@kittylemew a business making money off of other people’s taxes don’t seem right to me.
Rent a room or do it for free
@@ГригорийБедник-л4в yes, she is taking money for a service and then providing that service in public without providing compensation to those that pay for the space.
I'm sure that's OK in the former Soviet wonderland but around here if you make money you kick a little back to the people who helped you.
No money for the city from entrepreneurs doing business free or for fee. Other reason is to guard size of group to prevent an undercover political meetup place to organize subversive activities. Campus protests are temporary. A beach is free office space.
This is government overreach. You should be able to do yoga in the park. Food vendors should be registered for food safety but the fee should not be burdensome and there should not be a permit cap. If the San Diego city council wants to make its city better, it can start by making the streets safer with traffic calming and upzoning so that everybody has access to a home. Telling people to stop doing yoga and saying they're helping us is infuriating. There are real problems you are ignoring.
A group larger than 4 needs a permit for activities on the beach? So a family of 5 or larger needs a permit to hang on the beach? No wonder people are leaving this state.
Beaches are public property, not spaces for private enterprise.
Yes. Same thing is happening here with people renting kayaks at public boat ramps without a permit - they have finally cracked down. You don't get to use public resources to make money, even if it's supposedly "donations".
Channel 10 doesn’t even mention the other side of the story?
Before everybody snaps to a quick judgment, maybe get the other side? Come on channel 10?!
City Hall is public space. I'd start daily classes there. Illegal food vendors are an issue.
Yoga classes in a public space, not so much. Perhaps common sense will prevail.
I'm curious as to why there was a need to restrict this activity. What REALLY happened to make this the law? Come on, now. Let's hear the truth ... not just blather about someone's rights being denied. Did someone hold a class with 400 people? Is space limited here? Was the environment damaged?
It's a public space. So is running on the beach illegal there? Is swimming in the water illegal there? Are sun bathers allowed to stretch out and touch their toes without fear of being told to leave?
