AMAZING man! The guy made THREE attempts on Mt Everest in his fifties! BUT, he is one of only 5 people to have Blocked me on Twitter!! Anybody know why, please!¿?
Brian Blessed is an international treasure. Everyone sees him as this boisterous performer because of “Flash Gordon” and his personality, but he is an amazing actor. “I, Claudius” demonstrates what a brilliant actor M. Blessed is. If William Shatner can go to space, let’s have Brian Blessed get his shot as well!
I am now 70. I hated TV back in my younger days because the news used to stress me out after work and all the soaps. This became the first of a very few series that I actually made time to sit and watch. Every episode. All the great names played their parts so well. I was there in that time when they were on. I must say tho. The hinge pin that made it for me was Derek Jacobi. It was his acting and narration that pulled me into Ancient Rome like a black hole. Total respect to those who did this show in any way or form. Best thing I ever saw on TV by a long chalk and by crikey, I really mean that.
"It took a while to win over the critics, but it was an instant hit with the audiences." 50 years later, and every time, this disconnect repeats itself.
I swear, I could listen to Brian Blessed read the ingredients off condiment packet and die happy. Never a dull moment. At 86 showing no signs of slowing down...hope he never does.
I Claudius is timeless and essential viewing to those who haven't seen it before but its brilliance can also be quite depressing when you look at the state of UK TV these days. Brian's guest appearance in Blake's 7 just a few years later is also memorable and highly recommended. An absolute legend of an actor. and bravo for mentioning the importance of Jamers Webb and space exploration.
@@escapetheratracenow9883 Thank you and me to :) I've watched both shows multiple times and still think they are two of the best things the BBC ever produced. Thumbs-up for Edge of Darkness too - a terrific series.
Great idea, but two egos that big might not work. They both seem to do far less movie work than you would think they should, possibly because nobody can put up with them for long😂
A wonderful man and a wonderful series. Brian was correct in stating that it had their best actors. I am so happy to see it being brought back especially since, over here at least, to show these new generations that these actors are more than Prince Vultan and the cast of Dune. Hopefully it will be available on BBCA and/or Britbox or another streaming service outside of the UK. And I know Brian's real reasons to go out into space. 1) He wants to climb Olympus Mons on Mars. 2) To challenge the "In Space, no one can hear you scream" axiom.
I'm an American and love this show. I first watched in on Masterpiece Theater when we lived in Texas, and when the VHS was available, I purchased it and introduced it to my daughter. When the DVD was available, I then purchased it. I watch this series about once a year and just love it, as I love reading about Roman history (although the late Roman Republic is my favorite era to read about).
I knew somebody who was once on the same airline flight as Brian returning from Nepal...It's fair to say Brian hammed it up loudly to his fellow passengers/captive audience for the duration of the flight, & travellers were desperately trying to get off the plane as it arrived at the terminal after a 10 hour performance from Brian...!!! 😆😆😆
Brian Blessed’s autobiography is well worth a read for a laugh and feel good factor…and I never really liked him before thinking him just unnecessarily loud …but I do like him now I know him from his book…and I can see why Hildegard loves him.
I watched 'I, Claudius' a few years ago out of curiosity, and I can vouch for it being one of the greatest series ever created. Brian Blessed just embodies Augustus, and of course the whole cast is fantastic (and full of famous names). If you have any interest in ancient Rome, the corridors of power, messy family drama, or want to see an intriguing underdog story, then 'I, Claudius' is an excellent choice.
Funny, a few years after his tour de force in I, Claudius, I saw him in Blackadder (the first series). Left me wondering about his range... and yes, that scene with Sian Philips talking and talking about how she had to paint individual figs on the tree. I want to dig up the DVDs tomorrow, but can't afford a binge watch just yet. Life intrudes!
I watched it all slightly later here in the United States in PBS. Great fun for a boy in his teens. Brian Blessed stood out, but only a little: so many solid actors and exciting performances.
This lady doesn't get it, Brian was a superb Augustas Ceaser, absolutely spot on, I watched the entire series recently and it stands the test of time beautifully.
There’s a UA-cam item somewhere about the innovative use of camera directions to leave one amazed at its sheer brilliance. You younger snaps can’t credit the impact this series had on viewers long ago. The Daily Mail had to be taken into Intensive Care… 🐝John K
the only problem with "I Claudius" is it's too short. I've read the books and seen the show several times, and there is so much in both books that is cut out for the sake of brevity. Especially the first part, where she is scheming to get rid of Tiberius' rivals, and the final part where Claudius is now emperor. That gets it own book, but the tv show rushes through it. I know it is perfect as it is, but it could have had more scenes for the minor characters, like Claudius' father or brother Germanicus, Caligula's father. For the sake of fitting it into 6 episodes they cut a lot out, and with such a great cast and director and writer, they could have done maybe 10 or 12 episodes and still kept up the high quality
I love that Brian Blessed was cast as Matt Berry's father in "Toast of London", as I thought that Berry channeled Brian Blessed in "The IT Crowd"... ;-) I still want to show up at a Star Trek convention autograph session in full Roman armor, smack my chest, salute, and shout, "Hail, Sejanus!" ;-) God, that woman is a horrible presenter...
MY GOD, doesn't Brian look amazing, I mean, going STRONG after all these years, biting off a pregnant womans umbilical cord during an emergency birth did him no wrong 😊😊😊. He's 86 (Eighty Six). Good on ya Brian. LONG LIVE BRIAN BLESSED. ❤❤❤❤
To be 87 years old and still be that energetic is incredible. Love Brian ❤

@@PLASKETT7 Because he was 60 on his 3rd attempt? lol
Incredible actor, incredible voice, and so energetic at that age!
Yes, incredibile, such great casting altogether. Brian was my favorite.
I Claudius was and is a masterpiece.
here, here ...... we watched this and studied it in High School...the performances are some of the finest ever!

I can hear him now, "We've discovered something up here, yes, yes, FLASH GORDON'S ALIVE !!"
Do you want him to accidentally shatter the moon?
Hear hear ♥️💯

Brian, thank you for existing. The world is a better place for you .
I've always liked seeing and hearing Brian Blessed
So pleased to be still sharing the planet with Brian Blessed. International treasure!!!
Never change, Brian. We know you won't at 86, but never change.
I think I'll put the first episode of Z-Cars on later.
haha what a legend. they don't make 'em like Brian Blessed anymore. Her face when he kept saying crap haha priceless.

Truly larger than life , the great Brian Blessed .
I’ll never forget his role in Blackadder season 1, just brilliant 💎
With the severed hands of his vanquished enemies still clinging to the shoulders of his armour. Bloody brilliant!
@@johnmunro4952 😄 “Chiswick…fresh horses!!!”
Brilliant
Shame he hasn't done more comedy. I guess too much of a good thing might not work.
When I see Brian Blessed I immediately think of his character in the Blackadder comedy series.
I LOVE BRIAN BLESSED!! Truly a magnificent actor and human being!
l loved him as hawkman in flash gordon
Love Brian, wonderful actor. Love for Brian and his family. Cheers from New Orleans. USA.
87 years old. Seems like he hasn't aged a day in the last 30 years.
I, Claudius. Magnificent TV.

I vote for "outlive them all" -- it's the combination of writing, story, acting and directing creating something greater than the sum of the parts.

I wish Brian Blessed and William Shatner would make a movie together!

For 83 he looks amazing
hes 86 aparently. He does look brilliant for it
Blessed sinks into death in that famous scene. A triumph in acting.
I Claudius led me down the rabbit hole. First the two novels. Then Seutonius and Plutarch. Livy, Virgil and Tacitus.
Loving the use of the words 'regale us'

Tony Soprano, Augustus...it's always a family centered show.
I recognize Agripinna's influence on the character of Siobhan Roy from Succession. I also see Claudius' influence on Cousin Greg.
