Gåte is a really old band. The only original member is the singer. They dont care about winning as much is you might think. They want exposure. And they got that, with a performance that people either like or hate. Younger people like to see a performance that reflect the culture of a nation. And this was bullseye on that.
Finally a band I absolutely love (and have been a fan of since 2004) makes it to the ESC! Fun fact: Garmarna, to which you reacted a few days before and who have been also an inspiration for Gåte's music, had a song telling the same story on their album "Vedergällningen" from 1999, namley the title track. The difference is that in their version of this story, it's a boy and not a girl who is transformed into a wolf by the evil stepmother. The reason for this is that on this point, the traditional Swedish ballad, which Garmarna's song is based on, differs from the traditional Norwegian ballad "Møy i ulveham", which Gåte's song is based on. In a register of traditional Norwegian ballads put together by the University of Oslo, you find 9 versions of this ballad, the longest one having 30 verses! BTW, if you like Gåte, you might also like the Norwegian female-fronted Folk Metal/Rock band Bergtatt. Their band leader (and only founding member left), John Stenersen, also joined Gåte in the two live performances of "Ulveham", playing keyed fiddle (in Norwegian: nøkkelharpe), and played with Gåte on their Norwegian tour a few months ago, replacing the vocalist's brother who had left the band just a few months before. I recommend Bergtatt's song "Huldra". Gåte have a song with the same title, but it's a completely different song and Bergtatt's song is already from 2013. In case you might be interested, I can also point you to a videoclip of a live-concert by Bergtatt from 2016, which seems to have been professionally recorded at a festival in Hungary and which starts with the song "Huldra". But I think the sound quality of the studio version is better..
Really great vocals, and I think the music was a perfect accompaniment. I'll definitely check out their final performance as suggested in the comments! 🐺🐺

The original lyrics, which is a thousand years old ballad, was in old-fashioned Norwegian. As the language have changed over time, so has the traditional ballads. It is far from Old Norse. You have to go to Icelandic or Faroese to find something similar. The band had to change the lyrics, since Eurovision requires new material. The new text, which has the same content as the old one, is in a dialect that is spoken in parts of Norway today. We have two written languages in Norway, Bokmål, which is as good as Danish (a relic from 500 years under Danish rule), and Nynorsk, which is based on Norwegian dialects. You can say that the text is in Nynorsk, but it is a written language. The text is not written language, but spoken language. I guess most Norwegians will agree.
This song is amazing, and if you liked it you should check out more from their library. I will highly suggest a couple of their newer songs: "Huldra", which has strong similarities to this song and is outright amazing, and "Svarteboka", which features Agnete from Djerv, whom was also a guest vocalist in Dimmu Borgir's "Gateways"(which you have a video reaction of)! If you want to check out some of their older stuff, I can recommend "Sjå Attende" and "Knut liten og Sylvelin". Also check out the live version of this song from the MGP finals, because it's amazing! You'll be glad you did! ;)
Search up their song "Kom no disjka". This is another song that really shows the crazy capability of her voice. To some part even more than Ulveham in my opinion (which I love ofc, but "kom no disjka" is my fav of all time ❤). Been a fan of Gåte since they started out ❤. Really like your video, and you seem such a cool lovely guy. Love from Norway 😊
I just saw them a month ago playing live here in Stavanger. It was EPIC! Seeing them again this summer at Midtgaardsblot festival 🤩 Totally unrelated, but yet so related… seeing Aurora live in a month. Hope u keep going down both their work! 😄
I'm Norwegian. "Gåte" literally means "Riddle". The "å" is pronounsed as the "oa" in "boar", and the "e" is not silent. Think on it as the "Tolkien-letter" ë. You might want to check out the 4th finisher from Norway, "Gothminister" with the song "We Come Alive". Anyway. "Ulveham means Wolf's hame" And I saw them live back in 2001-2002 or something, when she actually was to young to enter the venue.. They ogmf course solved that, but it was the thing everybody talked about...
@@TheWolffAndTheMelody I know. That is why I commented. The Norwegian word for wolf is “Ulv” and “ham” is an old word for skin or disguise. Kine of like the phrase “Sheep clothing “. The word is very little used in our modern language.😁
@@runedahl1477 I forget not everyone immediately goes to google translate when a song title is in a language they don't speak! I love the language choices they made. It reminds me of the old fairy tales my grandpa told.
This lyric is 1000 years old and is about a young maiden who is bewitched and transformed into a wolf… She then kills nd drinks her evil stepmothers blood, and the curse is reversed. No wolder you liked it 🥳😊
They're from Norway! The language is a sort of modernized medieval Norwegian. It has a few archaic words and old-fashioned grammar, but mostly like modern Norwegian in the newest version of the lyrics (specifically Nynorsk Norwegian, not Bokmål Norwegian). The lyrics used to be a little different earlier in the competition, where it had some more archaic words and grammar. Most adult Norwegians would still be able to understand it if they took some time to interpret the more archaic parts. The original text the lyrics are based on is even harder to understand, as it's full-on medieval Norwegian.
Have been fortunate enough to see this band 12 times now, going back to 2003. On the last one in november they also played this song, the twice as long original version. The recorded vocals you can hear towards the end is actually her nephew, and the son of her brother Sveinung who is a founding member of the band. He stepped down recently, partly to support his son who at only 15 is already making music under the name Storm. On the show in november he did the warm up, and also joined the band for Ulveham. It wasjust awesome. If I were to reccomend something it would have to be Sjåaren, from their live DVD from what was originally their farewell concert back in 2005. I am a little hesitant to promote videos that are not on their official channel, but I will do it anyway: ua-cam.com/video/ls3ENq-Xyxc/v-deo.html. It's a quieter song, and what is special about this song is that Gunnhild at one point steps away from the microphone and sings acoustically int the room. It is one of those things where a recording can't really convey the atmosphere it creates, but still worth a watch.
I second your recommendation of the live version of "Sjåaren". She also did what you described at their concert in Oslo last October which I was lucky to attend.
You should have specified which version you refer to! The original album version from 2004, the official music video of the acoustic version from 2021 or the videoclip of their acoustic performance in an old coppermine from March 2020? The latter is a bit difficult to find, because the clip is just titled "Gåte - akustisk" and mentions the song title only in the description. But it's highly recommendable and to be found on their official channel here: ua-cam.com/video/iyzvIl1XMJ4/v-deo.html
She has a great voice, i would have liked to heard a bit more raw and a bit less effects tho. Music sounded good, ofc dont know the lyrics but it looked like it was sung with passion. ❤ and ✌️
Great reaction glad to be a Norwegian, Very cool that Gåte is going to Eurovision. You should check out Pure Wrath - Those Who Stand Still, its superb atmospheric melodic black metal, think you would love it!
Ohhhh that sounds amazing! Also is that a Lady Maria Profile pic! I'm obsessed with Bloodborne! I love Soulsborne in general! They are my favorite games.
If you want to hear more without effects you can check out their live DVD here: ua-cam.com/video/X2sAM3g4EiI/v-deo.html. It's from way back in 2005 so she was only 20 at the time but already a great voice.
Yeah, good voice and overall not bad, but to me it's overhyped and not a Eurovision winner. Especially because it sounds almost exactly the same like another artist's song that was already released decades ago and therefore is not the most creative venture in the world. And no, I'm not afraid of some fans shredding me now.😉 I didn't say it's bad, I'm just talking about the originality of it, and spiritually I can definitely connect to other nordic folk rock songs more. Having said this, it's definitely atmospheric! Just not my favourite in the Eurovision ranking this year.
@@MrCamilla Anyone who listens to "Lokk" by Marit Jensen Lillebuen and doesn't see any similarity in the vocal melodies has a questionable opinion I would say. Even Gåte themselves had to mention this artist as a source of their song to GEMA. And if the Eurovision game is played according to rules, this shouldn't be allowed. But no matter what will happen, my opinion that this is not creative will not change.
@@elendil_lehtinen don't think anyone has ever disagreed with that, they've been really transparent about it as well as you said. I'm really excited for them to perform this though, Marit Jensen died 50 years ago and it was a beautiful "lokk", a piece of Norwegian history, but not a song song. Lokk in general is used to call on cows in Scandinavia, so that they were able to implement it in a song is really impressive imo
@@MrCamilla They have been transparent about it AFTER newspapers and people revealed it. Before this, I didn't see any transparency in public. Apart from this, the Eurovision rules say that a song must not be released before September 1st 2023 (even in part) and that it must be an original. So no matter what will happen, if the EBU sticks to their own words and own rules, it would be ridiculous if this goes through. But maybe people will talk about this more when Eurovision comes closer. I don't really care what happens in the end, as my opinion stays the same anyway. If someone goes to Eurovision with a melody that already existed before, I doesn't look like the most creative and genuine approach to the contest. And that's what I meant.
@@elendil_lehtinen Gåte as a band has existed for 25 years, and what they're famous for is the way they incorporate existing traditional music and folklore into their rocky sound. That's their MO, and absolutely everyone familiar with Gåte knows this. When presenting their song as a Eurovision selection to the public, they described the "lokk" and why they had chosen it as an inspiration for the song. They never hid anything, it was never "revealed" by the newspapers. NRK has already asked EBU about it, and the song has been approved by them.

Anyway. "Ulveham means Wolf's hame"
And I saw them live back in 2001-2002 or something, when she actually was to young to enter the venue.. They ogmf course solved that, but it was the thing everybody talked about...
He already checked out Gothminister’s semi-final performance at MGP a couple of weeks ago and it's also a very lovely reaction!🖤✨️
I like The song alot Even i hope keiino had win. But i like The song a strong song to i hope is a winner to begause im selv is From Norway to smil❤😊
This is the Norwegian contribution for Eurovision 2024
Ulveham means wolf skin or wolf costume in Norwegian.😊
That is soooo cool! My last name is Wolff
@@TheWolffAndTheMelody I know. That is why I commented. The Norwegian word for wolf is “Ulv” and “ham” is an old word for skin or disguise. Kine of like the phrase “Sheep clothing “. The word is very little used in our modern language.😁
I was scrolling to find this comment! I can't believe no one else made that connection with your channel name!
@@ahuggie Depends on how many others understand Norwegian. Besides they are using an old type of Norwegian in the lyrics.😀😀😀
They took some very cool creative liberties with the lyrics- understandable to Norwegian speakers but feels very ancient and mystical. I love it.
win 2024
I like your trim, dude.
ayeeee, tryin to be like you boo!
This has been such a fun surprise for me. Can't wait to hear more.
I second your recommendation of the live version of "Sjåaren". She also did what you described at their concert in Oslo last October which I was lucky to attend.
The best of Gåte,is Kjærleik,on youtube 🥰
❤ and ✌️
Listen to gate - svarteboka. You might like the choruses there too. I have both songs at repeat for days lol help me :D
Ohhh sweet! lol
Com from Norway smil
Great reaction glad to be a Norwegian, Very cool that Gåte is going to Eurovision.
You should check out Pure Wrath - Those Who Stand Still, its superb atmospheric melodic black metal, think you would love it!
Ohhhh that sounds amazing! Also is that a Lady Maria Profile pic! I'm obsessed with Bloodborne! I love Soulsborne in general! They are my favorite games.
@@TheWolffAndTheMelody Haha yeah it’s Lady Marie. So cool to see a fellow bloodborne enjoyer \m/
@@archthrone5815 Before doing music content. I was a soulsborne creator hahaha
You need to react to Gåte feat Djerv “Svarteboka”. It’s great!
Hell yea!
Wish you would see the live version from nrk. ❤
Gåte pronounces "Gaw - te."
Gåte. They broke up long time ago, and reunited just recently. and is now back together.
Their early years sets the tone for their uniqe sound.
you need to see the livevideo
Håper du kan lage en video fra MGP-finalen der Gåte vant! Den videoen med rop fra publikum gjør at jeg får frysninger, den er helt sinnsyk! 🌟🔥🔥
Sorry folks, a few tips om the few weird letters in Norwegian:
Ø
Not O, more like U in fuck.
Å
A in fall (ish)
Æ
Dæmn, cant think åf anything 😉
Maybe Ø as in burn, Å as in mourne and Æ as in sad
❤❤❤
LOVED THIS!!!!
Norsk/Nynorsk.

They are Norwegian, they are from Norway
Not a bad voice but too many effects on top of it for my taste.
I'm curious now; which song does it sound like?
