What's really interesting is the how each drummer played their part. Max is playing match grip and the other drummer is playing traditional grip. So you can see and hear how each drummer approaches the music using the different style of grips..

This was one of the great instrumental bands from the 60's. I had their greatest hits album. Their biggest hit was "Walk, Don't Run". Some of the other songs they also did were "Telstar", "Lonely Bull" & "Hawaii 5-O theme. The group the Surfaris are actually the first ones who recorded "Wipe Out" in 1963. But it was common for groups to play each others songs.
I saw Don Wilson at the apartment #3... (#10 across the way). Pine Crest, 10th St. And he told me a guitarist and 8 yrs. old ! And he told me "Wipe Out" and "Walk, Don't Run". ;-)

I remember with great fondness... we were at the lake on our boat. Dad had bought an 8-track player and speakers and had a big (for the time) sound system on the boat. And there we were, listening to this song, the music booming out across the lake to the boats and fishers scattered around its shores. Following by Creedence, Johnny Cash, the Beach Boys...Wow! What an amazing time! What amazing music! What amazing parents! I was eleven years old at the time. Now 65, like so many other "Boomers", I was blessed to live through the best of days.

I grew up in Puyallup and a girlfriend of mine in my last years of school, lived with Joann and Dan which was Nokie's brother. Its crazy but all I really knew about him at the time is that he was a star in Japan. I also remember Hilltop very well btw. Just crazy stuff.

Being of that age group, my dad loved the Ventures. He was always playing this song on his record player in the early 80's. I even liked it despite it being instrumental. Dad hated the Fat Boys version that I blasted on my casette stereo later on in the 80's haha Thanks for bringing back good memories for me🙂

Well, you are NOT the only one old enough to remember Buddy Rich. He was a phenomenal drummer - I score him above Gene Krupa. Some of my favorite Carson Tonight Shows had Buddy on as a guest. He could certainly be a jerk with Johnny but it was fun to see and hear them spar. I truly think they admired the other's talent. And regarding The Ventures they were super talented and I am glad to still be able to see and hear them via YT. My favorite of theirs is "Hawaii 5-O". It is the best TV theme song ever! One reason is that Jack Lord's hair flip in the opening credits added a flourish that was done in time with the music. And my #2 Ventures song is the one that Jamal is reacting to here - the terrific "Wipeout".
I was just 18 and in Basic Training at Ft Knox and we went to a Adult Bar. One of the dancers was a little, stocky... As required by law she was wearing Tassel's and this song started, well...she looked like a twin engined DC-3 that was never going to get off of the ground...That's been 40 years ago and when ever I hear this song even today, it takes me back lol

Surf music helped keep electric guitar relevant when in the period between The Day The Music Died and The British Invasion. Not alone, but surf music at least kept some electric guitar in the charts.
Burn by Deep Purple made me want to play keyboards like Jon Lord. It's really cool how one song can make different people want to play different instruments. Ian Paice is a phenomenal drummer.
This was the drummer's "audition" song in order to be accepted into the local Saturday morning garage band. As a drummer I worked my ass off to learn this beat but never made it into that small circle of garage talent. But I still have my 1966 Slingerlands.

And yes the Almond bros band had a few instrumental songs that are a lot better than anyone. But the Ventures were in a class of there own as being a totally instrumental band. Wow love this and it really took me back to the 60's and 60's radio and transistor radios when I wouldn't get to sleep until way past the midnight hour. Such an amazing time for music and radio programming that included so many genres which became the soundtrack of our lives. How amazing that you could listen to the Beatles, followed by Motown artists, followed by instrumentals, followed by silly songs, followed sometimes by Frank Sinatra, followed by country cross-over songs, then back to Motown artists Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, Stevie Wonder and then followed up by The Rolling Stones. Dedicated genre radio did a lot to kill music appreciation of multiple genres. The above is why I really appreciate reaction videos!

Those boys can rock! Glad you let them play all the way through. They remind me of 2 other great instrumentals. In rock, Rumble, by Link Wray, a great native American guitarist, and this may be the only instrumental banned from AM radio. And in bluegrass, Dueling Banjos, with Glen Campbell and Carl Jackson. Both classics.

This drum battle was something they did for this particular performance, or at special times. I have the 45 vinyl from the 60s, of both The Ventures and The Sufaris. They sound as close to the same as two different band could possibly sound.

The first time I heard this song I was about 10 and was an Italian banquet hall this kid kept playing this song over and over on the jukebox.
